January 03, 2023 Who are your stories for? A quick and easy way to figure this out.
When you tell a story for everyone, you tell a story for no-one. All that effort and hard work you’ve put into your story, that ‘oh my god, shall I share it, what if people hate it, annoying chatter, it all goes to waste if you haven’t thought about your audience.
Here are 4 steps to help you figure out who your stories are for:
Step 1 - Write down who you don’t want to work with. If you’re in any way blocked with how you are for, being clear on who you’re not for, will really help.
Step 2 - Think about who you can deliver greatest value to, who you enjoy working with and who need what do you most.
Step 3 - What do they look like? What makes them ideal, what must they have e.g something very basic like budget to buy from you or it could be a unique problem, a stage in their life or burning desire to do something.
Step 4 - What behaviour do they exhibit that will help you identify them - do they spend lots of time on Instagram, attend certain events, turn to podcasts for self help

December 30, 20225 New Year’s storytelling resolutions you’ll actually be able to keep.
Always making New Years resolutions, only to break them whilst the Christmas tree rots outside, waiting to be taken to the tip? Yup, me too. That’s why I’ve come up with some slightly easier ones that maybe, just maybe, you’ll be able to keep in 2023.
I’m going to think about who I’m telling my story before I start telling it and tell it in a way that’s true to that audience and my brand

I will not be afraid to share my experiences and ask others to share theirs to build real and authentic connections

I will not use cliched words, nor will I use long fancy pants words to make me sound smarter (unless I speak that way and my audience responds well to that)

I will dare to be different in the stories I tell. If some people don’t like what I have to say, they’re not my people and that’s ok

I will not, repeat, will not forget to include a call to action in my stories. It’s not being pushy, it’s helping others know what to do next.

I’m sure there’s a gizzilion different rules but, I’m all for making storytelling simple for you, so I’ve boiled it down to just three.
Rule no.1 - Be engaging and be yourself. Flaws and all.
Rule no.2 - Show others how you can take them on a journey from where they are now to where they want to be.
Rule no. 3 - Make sure you’re clearly tell others how to get started on that journey with you.

December 19, 2022Never assume others understand how you can change their life.
It’s a common misconception that storytelling is all about telling people how much you rock. It’s actually all about meeting needs. If you can show someone how you meet their needs and solve their problem better than the next person, you get the gig.
If you’re just telling people you’re great, you’re not solving any problem or meeting any need (other than possibly that of your own ego but that doesn’t pay the bills!).
In this episode, we explore how real life stories can help you show others how you can change their life.
Note - if you’re struggling to know how to structure your story, here’s a simple framework for you to try. It’s from Building a Storybrand by Donald Millar, a book that’s worth reading if you’re marketing a business.
Someone has a problem (typically your customer or could be you if telling your founder story)

They meet a guide, a guru (that's you)

Who gives them a plan ( a solution, could be a product, could be a service, could be some great advice) and calls them to action (tells them what to do with it)

That helps them avoid failure and ends in success

December 14, 2022Why trust matters and how you can use stories to build it.
If you want others to buy into what you have to say, then you need to build trust. That trust doesn’t come from pretending to be someone you’re not, just because you feel you have to be a certain person to succeed.
No, trust comes from others understanding who you really are and what, therefore, this means to them. And how do you help others understand you better? You got it - through sharing your stories.
Here are some tips to help you build trust through your storytelling:
Write as you speak to really get your personality across. Cut out the fancy pants words you feel you have to include to sound clever (unless of course that is how you speak). And then read it aloud. If it feels uncomfortable it’s likely you’ve unwittingly written it in someone else’s voice

Don’t be afraid to show a slightly less polished version of yourself from time to time. Stories of failure and vulnerability create strong emotional connections as we can all relate - you’re human after all!

Let your voice be your difference. Be true to yourself as you share your stories to stand you apart. If people don’t like what they hear - go and seek out those that do - they are your people.

The ultimate tragedy is when nobody knows just how brilliant you are. In this episode, we’ll explore ways to change that.
Nowadays it’s not enough just to do a great job, you need to be showing other people just what impact you can have on their lives. And this is where your personal brand story comes into its own.
Your story lets your audience into your vision of the world; helping them understand the path you’re on, in order to connect that with their own sense of purpose and values so that they will join you on your mission.
A brand story is made up of 3 parts - your vision, your mission and your values and we will unpick each of these in more detail in future episodes.
