ABOUT THE EPISODE:
As entrepreneurs we are always sharing our vision, the qualities of our product and sometimes even our own story. And that all falls into the art of sales! But how do we actually sell to large, complex organisations? How do we move forward with a deal? How do we navigate the procurement process? And how do we get a deal closed?
To answer these questions and give us an insightful overview of what Sales actually is, we've invited Luca Bovone at The Family to share with us his art.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Luca Bovone is the founder and CEO of Habyt ex. PROJECTS, one of the leading co-living providers in Europe. Before launching Habyt, Luca was one of the first hires of Dropbox in Europe. There, after opening several markets in the SMB and Mid-market segments, he focused on selling into large-scale organisations, managing to close some of Dropbox's largest deals globally.

ABOUT THE EPISODE:
Businesses depend more and more on the multitude of consumers they address. They MUST build great products, and ads can’t cover up as much as they used to. Take Tesla: Lots of trendy & successful companies aren’t using any traditional advertising. Advertising is becoming more of a business and less of an industry.
It’s now the playing field of people driven by efficiency, not just creativity. Consumers are seeing images made just for them, based on their data and precise targeting. But targeting narrows perspectives, it takes away shared stories, and doesn’t expose companies to mass markets. And critically, it leaves the door open to messages optimized for interactions, where extreme content rises to the top.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Ian Leslie worked for many years as a strategist in advertising agencies before starting a career as an author & journalist. In the past several years, he’s written two super successful books: Curious and Born Liars. Advertising & branding have no secrets for him: How the advertising world is evolving; how one must think about advertising for their own startup in this new age; how does this new world impact the work entrepreneurs do on branding?

ABOUT THE EPISODE:
Don’t fall in love with one single brilliant idea. As an entrepreneur, you’re fighting against a problem, you’re not worshiping ideas. Problem first, idea second. You’re about to dedicate all of your time & energy to tackling this problem, so make sure it’s a good one. A good problem is real, you can clearly acknowledge and define it, and it’s getting worse every day. Leave your ideas behind and concentrate on the problem that obsesses you 👾

Oussama Ammar is the Co-Founder of The Family. He got his first taste of the startup world when he was 12 years old and launched one of the first web agencies in France. He spent a few years working on it with multiple spin-offs and independents platforms, including one of the first online antique shops. In his early 20’s, after a quick detour through the social sciences, law, logic and philosophy at La Sorbonne, Oussama created Hypios that became, in less than 3 years, one of the few open innovation leaders in the world. Angel Investor for over 2 years with 21+ active deals (most of them Silicon Valley-based).

ABOUT THE EPISODE:
One of the things we’ve noticed amongst ourselves at The Family is that the entrepreneurs who impress us the most are the ones who have the steepest learning curve, the ones who have the most to learn and who are able to push that curve upwards as fast as they possibly can.
Learning quickly is about believing wholeheartedly that you are able to do it, focusing on what you are good at & trying to learn all the time. Plus, if people understand how to look for answers in today’s world, their rate of learning can go way up.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Mobility is a word Travis VanderZanden is definitely familiar with. Before founding Bird, he co-founded Cherry, an on-demand car-wash service, was the COO of Lyft and VP of Global Driver Growth at Uber. Quite a resume.
ABOUT THE EPISODE:
Travis is interviewed by Martin Mignot, Partner at Index Ventures, one of our favorite VCs at The Family. A really nice and smart guy, advocate of a healthy ecosystem, backing courageous entrepreneurs such as the founders of Blablacar, Captain Train, Deliveroo and… Bird. They will came to discuss why the emergence of new transportation options presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make cities radically more liveable.

ABOUT THE EPISODE:
An amazing example is Kitchen Stories. Co-Founders Verena and Menting were straight out of business school when they decided to launch an app to help everyone learn how to cook. They had no coding skills, no particular cooking ones either. They had never started a company before and of course had no way to get money. So they did what they had to do: roll up their sleeves and learn everything from scratch. Fast-forward 10 months after the launch: the app already had millions of downloads and served 120 countries. And they did it with zero marketing spending. Kitchen Stories has since grown to over 15M users with top-class VCs like Cherry Ventures and Point9 on board.
So we invited Verena at The Family to share her secret sauce with us, the one that helped them become the largest food publisher on the App store practically overnight.

ABOUT THE EPISODE:
Are you trying to raise €250k to start building your company? Stop everything and listen to this podcast.
Your cap-table (% of ownership of your company between founders, investors, employee) is one of the most important asset you have. Don’t fuck it up. Why? Because if you’re raising money without leverage (traction, previous exit), you’ll most likely get a bad deal. You’ll end-up raising money from Angels that will take 15 to 25% of your company. Then your nightmare starts. We’ve seen it over and over again at The Family. One of our obsession is to keep our companies virgin. Because fucking-up your cap-table % is like getting a face-tattoo when you’re drunk. It’s an irreversibly bad idea.

Caterina Fake is an investor at the American fund Yes VC. Going through her amazing career would take HOURS, but the highlights were being the cofounder of Flickr (the photostorage website, acquired by Yahoo) and on the board of both Etsy and Creative Commons. What is really impressive about her path is that she never let herself be constrained by her environment. With a background in art & literature, she is always able to reinvent herself & learn new things to achieve upcoming milestones 🏆
ABOUT THE EPISODE:
This Silicon Valley figure is a role model, an example of dedication & creativity, able to enter and master the tech world both as an accomplished entrepreneur and now as an investor. Her curiosity and pragmatism constantly shine through, like with her latest podcast: Should This Exist? We were super excited to welcome her on stage with our Director Mathias Pastor. They talked about her journey from the early days of the web, Himalaya, homeschooling, the future of technology... A lot of ground has been covered here!

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Boris Radke joined Zalando at an early stage when the startup was hitting the ground running to stay ahead of its hyper-growth. With no prior experience for this size of project, he was assigned to build the logistics footprint from scratch. He is now the Chief Information Officer of ProSiebenSat. 1 where together with his team, he is taking care of the technical and digital infrastructure, and transforming the enterprise application landscape for the entire group.
ABOUT THE EPISODE:
From its launch in 2008 as a small Rocket-backed startup, Zalando grew to become Europe’s #1 e-commerce platform and a €10B publicly-listed company... in 6 years. And it did so rather quietly, keeping a low profile on its internal operations. So what's the story behind this huge success? We’re glad to welcome Boris Radke to give us a peek behind-the-scene!
