  • How regulations not meant for contractors, sometimes end up complicating their business

When agencies enact new rules aimed at curtailing some aspects of the larger national economy they can sometimes lead to conflicting impacts on federal contracting, both for the companies and the federal agencies. There are a couple of recent examples that we discussed with David Berteau, President and CEO of the Professional Services Council. We also got into what the fourth quarter could look like for contractors after the last one didn't perform as well as though.

  • A new way to keep track of all that Inflation Reduction and CHIPS Act money

With the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, that means a large amount of investment from both the private and public sector. With much of it going to local infrastructure and manufacturing endeavors, it can be tough for people, especially private citizens, to find out where that money is going. To help, the Center for American Progress has created a new tool to catalog more than 35,000 of these investments. To find out what went into this project, Federal News Network's Eric White spoke with Emily Gee, who is senior vice president for Inclusive Growth at American Progress.

  • USAID moves to keep more dollars flowing to the countries its actually helping.

The U.S. Agency for International Development operates throughout the world, but all its work is local. It's been on a drive to concentrate more contract and grant dollars to organizations in the countries where a project is occurring. At USAID, they call that localization. For a progress report, Federal News Network's Tom Temin spoke to the agency's senior advisor for localization, Sarah Rose.

Like many organizations, the intelligence community is grappling with the rapid advances of generative artificial intelligence over the past nine months. Many spy agencies are now evaluating their plans for both using the technology and defending against its use. For the latest, the Federal Drive was joined by Federal News Network’s Justin Doubleday.

  • A policy rider in Congress would mean the end of TSP’s mutual fund window

The Thrift Savings Plan has seen plenty of changes over the last year, but one of those updates has had perhaps a little less time in the spotlight. The new “mutual fund window,” which launched last summer, offers TSP participants 5,000 additional investment options. But now, a bill in Congress is threatening an early demise of the optional program. Federal News Network’s Drew Friedman joined the Federal Drive with more.

  • A business plan for reform of the Small Business Administration

The Small Business Administration might be a small agency but it has outsize influence over the economy. The pandemic highlighted shortcomings in the SBA, including constituents' access to credit, customer service, and entrepreneurial development. That's according to a task force convened by The Bipartisan Policy Center. And it has a list of recommendations for reform. Joining me with more, the task force co-chairs. Former SBA associate administrator in the Office of Capital Access, Ann Marie Mehlum and the former chief of staff and chief operating officer, Pradeep Belur.

  • Agencies look to grab on to those left jobless from tech sector shake up

Federal hiring managers view sector-wide shakeups in the private sector, especially the tech sector, as an opportunity to grab some talent for public service. Agencies are joining forces with state and local governments to pitch that idea of public service career in public service to displaced techies. Those agencies held a recent “Tech to Gov” virtual job fair, to help some hires while interest is high. Federal News Network’s Jory Heckman spoke with a senior advisor for the Office of Personnel Management’s Hiring Experience Group, Kyleigh Russ.
