The First Gen Hunter Podcast

One of the coolest dudes I know is back on the podcast- Mike Reeber of Roaming Fire Foods. Mike is not only a fellow shed head, but he is also a skilled hunter, and professional game chef, and we discuss all of these topics and more on this episode. Thank you for tuning in!

Chris Dyer is the greatest deer hunter you've never heard of. Go ahead argue with me. I'll send you picture after picture, and story after story to prove my claim. The man lives and breathes whitetails. During the hunting season you can count on Chris to tag multiple bucks, and during shed season he will have the biggest shed pile because of quantity and quality of sheds he scoops up. In this episode though he lays down some great info on how to find more matches while shed hunting. And this is perfect timing because he just won 2nd place for biggest matched set of antlers at the Iowa Deer Classic.

We all have our preconceived judgments about every aspect of hunting. I am the same way. But after hunting pen raised birds on a hunting preserve this past weekend, I was reminded of a wise phrase: "don't knock it til you try it."

Think of the most brutal grizzly mauling you've heard of someone surviving. Now imagine that situation being even worse. Jeremy Evans is the toughest man on the planet. Period. As you will hear in this interview ten miles into the backcountry Jeremy FOUGHT OFF a sow grizzly when he accidentally came in between her and her cub. He fought her off 3 times without bear spray, a gun, or a knife and miraculously survived his horrific injuries. It's quite simply the most brutal bear attack I have ever heard of where the victim survived. Besides the bear attack, Jeremy is an expert hunter and we discuss his many successes hunting whitetails, mule deer, elk, moose, buffalo and more.

Listener Be Advised: The nature of Jeremy's injuries are so graphic you should not listen to this in the presence of children.

Isn't it great when the cookie crumbles in your favor? That's what happened to Antonio Giordano of Harvest Score when he went hunting for Mule Deer in Arizona and Elk in Colorado. Since then, Antonio has built a new scouting app called Harvest Score, and he tells Alex and me about its capabilities and usefulness for hunters who jump on board!

Is shed hunting worthless? There are plenty of Uncle Rico type bow hunters who will tell you it is. They will talk about the 180s and 2Hundies they almost shot, and how they were in totally different locations than where their sheds were found by a farmer two miles away. But are testimonies such as these to be trusted? Should all hunters accept them at face value, and conclude for themselves that shed hunting has no value? Caleb and I are going to tackle that one on this episode of Pickin' Bones. Thanks for listening.

Oh, and go shed hunting when you finish the episode.

Broad head lodged deep in your thigh 10 miles into the back country = dude, you're screwed.

Accidentally cut yourself really bad while field dressing an elk 7 miles from your truck  = dude, you're screwed.

Severe burns on your hands and arms from a grease fire on your camp stove 8 miles from cell service = dude, you're screwed.

Anaphylactic shock from allergic reaction to several wasp stings during a September archery elk hunt deep in a drainage with no cell service = dude, you're screwed,

Or not. Because you prepared well and put together a packable first aid kit you were able to treat your serious injury and buy yourself enough time to find the medical care you needed to save your life. In the end you made it safely back to your family and friends.

That's what we are discussing in this episode of The First Gen Hunter Podcast. How to take advantage of the industry leading first aid gear assembled by My Medic to build the perfect backcountry, or tree stand compatible first aid kit. We also talk about Zeff's hunting experience, and how he got his name from his great grandfather who was a houndsman, and  1 of the less than 10 confirmed successful hunters of a North American Jaguar!

We've all seen it. The celebrity hunter who has documented themselves harvesting multiple big game animals and then they go on another hunting trip only to reveal their hunt camp meals of grocery store pork chops, moo cow steaks, and everything else other than that pure, clean, organic protein they were lauding just one episode earlier. They're guilty of it, sometimes I'm guilty of it, and there's a good chance you are as well. So how do we fix this? How do we enter the backcountry, or deer camp eating the food we claim motivates us to hunt? Nick Otto of The Huntavore Podcast joins Alex and me on this episode to coach us up on go to wild game meals for our future hunting trips.
