  • Episode 390 – Just Us and a Flame Thrower
Episode 390 dawns, the snow has fallen and the only option left to Patrick and John is to talk about the story of some random guy clearing his driveway with a flamethrower. (We do not actually endorse using a flamethrower to clear a driveway, or for anything else now that you mention it.) Also in this episode, discussions of SECRET FACEBOOK GROUPS (omg, John. Omg.), Choose Your Lawsuit Adventures with Netflix, The Lord of the Rings movies nearly 20 years later, Man in the High Castle, Vader Episode 1: Shards of the past (fan film), Star Trek and so much more…

  • Episode 389 – With Beyond The Trope
Patrick and John welcome Giles Hash and Michelle Graham – cohosts of the Beyond the Trope Podcast – to the show to talk about their own podcast and how they balance life of writers and podcasters with their day jobs and families.
About Beyond the Trope: Once upon a time, three friends went crazy and started a podcast about the deep, artistic depths of fiction. Their podcast style is casual, and they love to geek out about the things they love! They’re creators who believe that pop culture (and especially mass-market writing) has something for everyone, not just “those nerds.” Since that bout of poor judgement in 2013, they’ve been releasing weekly episodes on all sorts of topics, from fiction writing and author interviews to covering conventions and cosplay basics.
    This week’s picks:

    * Michelle: Animal Farm
    * Giles: Red Dead Redemption 2
    * John: Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames
    * Patrick: The Bill Murray Stories: Life lessons learned from a Mythical Man

  • Episode 384 – Just Us and Physical Books
Patrick and John are back this week to talk about physical books. John highlights, underlines and marks notes in physical books whereas Patrick is convulsing and wants to curl up in a ball under his desk just having to type that for you to read… Patrick sees physical books as art and displays them proudly. Where do you fall? Is there a middle ground? Are physical books works of art to be admired and displayed or are they tools in your knowledge arsenal? (Yes, I just totally made that up!) Can they be both? Tune in, true believers, and find out…

  • Episode 383 – With RJ Theodore (Rekka Jay)
In episode 383 of the Functional Nerds Podcast, Patrick Hester and John Anealio welcome RJ (Rekka Jay) Theodore – author of FLOTSAM!
About FLOTSAM: A fantastical steampunk first contact novel that ties together high magic, high technology, and bold characters to craft a story you won’t soon forget. Captain Talis just wants to keep her airship crew from starving, and maybe scrape up enough cash for some badly needed repairs. When an anonymous client offers a small fortune to root through a pile of atmospheric wreckage, it seems like an easy payday. The job yields an ancient ring, a forbidden secret, and a host of deadly enemies. Now on the run from cultists with powerful allies, Talis needs to unload the ring as quickly as possible. Her desperate search for a buyer and the fallout from her discovery leads to a planetary battle between a secret society, alien forces, and even the gods themselves. Talis and her crew have just one desperate chance to make things right before their potential big score destroys them all.
About RJ Theodore / Rekka Jay: R J Theodore lives in New England where she splits her time between writing, reading, and design. She has been a voracious reader as far back as she can remember, staggering her parents with the piles of new paperbacks she would hunt down in local bookstores. Her broad tastes have led her to write novels that aren’t easily classified into any genre but are guaranteed to be an adventure. She wrote (though never finished) her first novel at age thirteen. It was a Star Trek fan fiction, and it’s probably best that it’s been lost to the ages (Though her publisher would very much like to read it. – Ed.). As she approached college, her focus switched to illustration and design, but she rediscovered storytelling through narrative after graduating from art school. With the release of FLOTSAM, Theodore will debut her Peridot Shift series of steampunk first contact novels.

  • Episode 381 – With Ryder Carroll
In episode 381 of the Functional Nerds Podcast, Patrick Hester and John Anealio welcome Ryder Carroll – creator of The Bullet Journal Method: Track Your Past, Order Your Present, Plan Your Future.
About Ryder Carroll: Bullet Journal® (or BuJo® for short) was created by Ryder Carroll, a digital product designer and author living in Brooklyn, NY. Diagnosed with learning disabilities early in life, he was forced to figure out alternate ways to be focused and productive. Through years of trial and error, he developed a methodology that went far beyond simple organization. Now he focuses on helping others learn what the Bullet Journal method is truly about: the art of intentional living.
About The Bullet Journal Method: Though it does require a notebook, Bullet Journal® is actually a methodology. It’s best described as a mindfulness practice disguised as a productivity system. It’s designed to help you organize your what while you remain aware of your why. The goal of the Bullet Journal is to help its practitioners (bullet journalists) live intentional lives, ones that are productive and meaningful.

    * John: The Obstacle Is the Way: The Timeless Art of Turning Trials into Triumph by Ryan Holiday
