Pax has always been one of our favorite conventions, as it usually presents the best of the best with the worst of the worst. While there was WAY too much this year to properly digest it all, there’s plenty to praise and roast alike. The Geek Down rode in full force for PAX 2017, scoping out the big boys and the indies on site.

Pat had good things to say about this horror comic, with the caveat that you're really INTO horror comics. Lord Baltimore is missing. The Red King—evil incarnate—is taking over the world. Baltimore’s team has been driven apart, with some of them dying on the front-lines while others are in hiding. Since the day he set out for revenge on the vampire who killed his family, Baltimore’s fight has gotten bigger than he’d ever imagined, but what role will he take as evil finally threatens to consume the world? This story took him back to those days as an angsty teenager just looking for everything to burn, and for that it's a recommend.

Pat had mostly good things to say about this pseudo-sequel to the 1930's classic. With new allegories to classic character tropes that were actually debuted IN the original King Kong, an interesting direction is taken. Scientists, soldiers and adventurers unite to explore a mythical, uncharted island in the Pacific Ocean. Cut off from everything they know, they venture into the domain of the mighty Kong, igniting the ultimate battle between man and nature. As their mission of discovery soon becomes one of survival, they must fight to escape from a primal world where humanity does not belong. Utilizing the new technology available to bring some horrific parts of the wild to life, it (mostly) resists the urge to overproduce visuals and actions, and for that earns respect and a recommendation to see.

Pat gives the comic-reader's perspective on 2017's Logan. Supposedly Hugh Jackman's final turn as the famed Wolverine character and touted as the on-screen adaptation of the Marvel Comics "Old Man Logan" miniseries, this one may have snowjobbed us all. Whether or not there was deliberate deceit from the marketing -- we discuss that. Also starring Patrick Stewart, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, Richard E. Grant and Dafne Keen, the film follows a past-his-prime Logan (no longer the Wolverine) embarking on a road trip across America for one final mission. In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan's attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.

JM gives us the full-contact context in what SHOULD have, and COULD have, been a phenomenal PPV, but instead dropped the ball egregiously. Poor tile shifts, disappointing stunts, and an overall bad taste is pretty much all that came out of it.
