The Give Me Five Podcast: An Uncultured Look at Pop Culture and Nostalgia

Sometimes recordings run smoothly, other times we anger the podcast gods and the poltergeists start messing with our internet. But, we did manage to record an episode about the new netflix movie (released tonight!) called Stowaway, Greg had some uplifting nerdy fun with the Mythic Quest Raven's Banquet special Everlight and we talked about Shang Chi and a bunch of other upcoming movies.

And join us on Monday for Side B, where we will discuss the David Cronenberg Body Horror film, Scanners until our heads explode.

In 1979 the Ramones weren't the first choice to star in Rock N Roll High School, or the second, or the third, potentially even the fourth. They were however the best choice as they helped make this movie a fun little story about standing up to authority, rebeling and rocking out. The movie has strong performances by PJ Soles and Paul Bartel and less strong performances by Deedee Ramone, but it comes together as a fun little trip back to the early 80's.

Stick around for this week's question... Top five best non-documentary rock movies.

As you know one of our founding members stepped away from the show several weeks ago, and while we wish him the best and thank him for all he did for Give Me Five, the show must go on. So we have invited past guest host, Omar, to step in and bring his unique knowledge of history and music (and oddly collecting Hello Kitty lipgloss) to the show.

For his first week he gets to opine on Joey Ramone, the superhero comedy Thunderforce starring Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer and the historical fiction novels from the Iron Age Trilogy.

Greg recently found a really unique comic series that needed to be brought to the listeners attention as well, Stray Dogs. It is described as Lady and the Tramp meets Seven and it is fantastic.

All this, and plenty of Florida news, music chat and other shenanigans on episode 180!

The poster / cover art for Crime Zone looks fantastic!

The movie itself, well, not so much. We think this Peruvian, sci-fi crime caper might be good, however we only had access to a You Tube version as it isn't available anywhere else. So, we had to fill in the blanks on lost audio, scenes that were too dark, and of course tracking issues. Anyway, it stars Sherilyn Fenn, David Carradine, and Peter Nelson.

For the first time in over a year we had some big box office numbers and some bigger monsters provided them. King Kong vs Godzilla did some pretty impressive pandemic numbers despite being on HBO Max at the same time. Is it worth the hype?

Rob read yet another fantasy book, by one of his favorite authors. Mark Lawrence. It takes place on the same planet as his Rob's favorite series The Red Queen's War, but does it have the same level of enjoyment.

Greg also got a chance to watch the first 4 episodes of Invincible. If may look like a fun little cartoon for kids, but it is absolutely not. Thankfully he had read the books so he didn't traumatize his kid.

Remember to check out our Monday Side B episode where we will talk about the 1989 Peruvian sci fi film Crime Zone in-depth and of course our Give Me Five Question of the Week.

It's April Fools week, and since Rob has been on a literal movie choice kick, he has chosen April Fools Day as our movie of the week. We've all seen the VHS cover but few had seen the movie. What did we think? Are there delightful innovative gory kills? How did the movie age? What happened to the director of this AND When a Stranger Calls? We answer all this in episode 178 B!

Finally we got our hands on a brand new video game console from Japan, the Nintendo Entertainment system. Will it be a success or fizzle out like the Atari?

When looking for the classic Stooges album Funhouse, Greg found out that it was the 40th anniversary of the release of the Tobe Hooper classic Funhouse. Funhouse was one of the films Hooper directed between Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist, but its a bit lesser know. Is it good? How dos it hold up?

Rob and Greg worked at Blockbuster throughout college. That is part of the reason we have such a love for crappy old movies. When you have unlimited rentals, you can delve into the cult classics. So when the Last Blockbuster doc hit Netflix, there was no doubt we would check that out for nostalgia's sake.

The Snyder cut of Justice League also came out, and having reviewed the first one waaaaay back in episode 16, we decided to see if it was worth the wait. How did the re-working help the overall story?

Finally, the Falcon and Winter Soldier delivered an action-packed episode with plenty of intrigue and new characters. Also, a guy who looks punchable in the Captain America suit.

And join us on Side B, where we will discuss the Tobe Hooper flick that fell between Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist, and frankly, didn't suck. The Funhouse!
