The Give Me Five Podcast: An Uncultured Look at Pop Culture and Nostalgia

Zombies are back! Well, they never really left, but Zach Snyder is playing around in a world full of Zombies again, and we are here to let you know how it is. What new twists does it add to an oversaturated genre?

We also got around to watching Without Remorse, the Michael B Jordan film based on a Tom Clancy novel. Is is hinting at a future full of rainbows?

And a Marvel comedy came out on Hulu. MODOK is not based in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but will it use that freedom to bring new creativity and humor to the giant floating head?

Remember to tune in next week for Side B, where we cover one of the lesser known Werewolf movies from the 80s, Silver Bullet.

Last week Tawny Kitaen passed away. To anyone growing up in the 80's you knew her as THE fantasy video vixen. While reading about her life, I found out that she had been in a movie called Gwendoline (or The Perils of Gwendoline In the Land of the Yik Yak) and decided that we would watch that for episode 185.

I chose it with no other information. No trailer. No description. Just a desire to know what a Yik Yak was.

As it turns out it is a exploitative adventure film about a butterfly, some diamond mines and characters that manage to get captured at least 10 times in an hour and a half.

Don't watch this. But definitely enjoy our pain as we did watch it.

And of course our Give Me Five Question of the Week, what are the best rip offs of Indiana Jones in media?

A little bit of a lull in releases allowed us to catch up on some movies and books that we had missed. Greg finished up a 600 page biography on Bruce Lee and learned a bunch about 60's and 70's Hollywood, including some Bruce Lee ties to the Manson Murders, as well as how he helped change Hollywood.

Rob saw a movie poster featuring Danny Trejo on a buffalo and was excited to see Dead Again in Tombstone, until he actually saw, Dead Again in Tombstone.

And Love Death and Robots is back with season 2, with 8 new animated shorts for us to salivate over.

And join us on Monday for Side B, where we will discuss the 1985 Indiana Jones themed bondage off movie The Perils of Gwendolyn in the Land of the Yik Yak, and our question of the week.

Some people may consider My Science Project to be a ripoff of Weird Science despite the fact that it came out a few weeks earlier. If you like movies about science projects that aren't really science projects that involve time traveling Dennis Hoffman, a T-rex vietnam battle in a high school gym, dudes that really like cars, and a car that looks like a hotel room that you rent by the 1/2 hour, then this movie and episode is for you.

And of course our Give Me Five Question of the Week, who are the coolest teachers in film and TV?

A totally packed week full of 1970s serial killers, visits to an actual theater and delicious sugary cereals. And to top it all off we have a look at yet another deconstruction of the superhero genre, Jupiter's Legacy. Is it necessary in a worls that has Invincible, The Boys, Brightburn and other how-much-power-is too-much shows.

Check out our review of those shows / movies and stay tuned for some Venom news, crazy Florida news and sad news about video vixen Tawny Kitaen

It is VERY rare that a big budget time travel dinosaur movie slips by us unnoticed. A Sound Of Thunder not only did that, but it was as recent as 2005. It starred Ed Burns and Ben Kingsley and we still didn't know it existed. Most likely because there were budget issues, lawsuits, and script issues with this movie based on a Ray Bradbury short story. If you haven't seen it, definitely check out this episode. (you will most likely remember it from a Simpson's Treehouse of Horror Episode)

And of course our Give Me Five Question of the Week, what are the best movies based on short stories?

This week we talk about a hilarious family movie The Mitchells vs the Machines (on Netflix), the horror suspense film Things heard and Seen and the new Clone wars era Star Wars series The Bad Batch. While 2 of those things are family friendly, we definitely aren't and I apologize on behalf of my cohosts.

Anyway check out our review of those shows / movies and stay tuned for some Marvel news, Red Sonja news and random Florida stuff.

Lots of discussion this week about Falcon and Winter Soldier's finale. Did it stick the landing? What do the big changes mean for the Marvel Universe moving forward.

The Mortal Kombat trailer brought that movie from a "maybe we'll see it to a DEFINITELY we'll see it, did it live up to its violent intense trailer?

Finally we check out Shadow and Bone, a new fantasy series on Netflix based on the fantasy series by Leigh Bardugo. We were hesitant to start another high concept streaming fantasy series, but were swayed very early on. Listen for our thoughts.

And join us on Monday for Side B, where we will discuss the original 1995 Mortal Kombat movie, and our question of the week.

This past week Mortal Kombat hit the theaters and HBO Max. Well, this isn't a review of that movie. This is a review of the 1995 surprise hit that starred Christopher Lambert and Bridgette Wilson-Sampras. It isa movie remembered fondly, but as we've realized over the years, sometimes nostalgia should stay in the past.

And of course our Give Me Five Question of the Week, if we want a good action movie that ALSO has a great plot, what should we watch?

We have all seen the head explosion gif from Scanners but how many of us had actually seen Scanners? In the case of the hosts of this podcast, none. So we decided to watch the Cronenberg film most famous for it's exploding heads. What did we think? Is it more than just special effects? Does it hold up 30 years later? And most importantly, how many Canada jokes can we fit in one hour long episode?

Stick around for this week's question... Top five exploding heads in movies and filme?
