The Give Me Five Podcast: An Uncultured Look at Pop Culture and Nostalgia

After 2 weeks of subpar episode 4's we land on the 56th (or something) James Bond movie, the Living Daylights. We are going back to the cold war as Timothy Dalton's bond fights the guy from Mitchell (only MST3K fans will get that one) How does this Bond film hold up? We discuss gadgets, girls, and villains this week. (and Mujahadeen!)

Then stay tuned for our question of the week based on The Living Daylights, What are the top 5 James Bond theme songs?

Vampires on a plane! A classic hotel that became more famous as time moved on and scandals piled up. And a re-imagining of a classic 80s cartoon that has caused quite a few arguments online.

This week we cover a book about a famous hotel that has spawned movies, songs, tv shows and books, but has also been the scene of famous deaths and meltdowns, the Chateau Marmont.

An airplane is hijacked and a woman is shot, but it turns out that she has a little secret that isn't going to make the hijackers happy... shes a vampire and she is not happy. (Blood Red Sky)

And last but not least Masters of the Universe: Revelation takes a bold new direction for He-man but does the writing hurt the effort?

All this and some coverage of Pokemon live action and SDCC announcements.

Next week on Side B the Summer of 87 continues with a James Bond flick, The Living Daylights and our question of the week. What are the best James Bond Theme songs?

Superman The Quest For Peace is a historically bad sequel. Coming one week after Jaws The Revenge I'm shocked that moviegoers in 1987 ever went back to see a movie again.

A movie racked with budgetary, script and effects issues, it killed the Superman franchise for decades, and watching it nearly sucked our will to live away as well.

Then stay tuned for our question of the week based on Superman The Quest For Peace, What are the worst villain representations in film? (villains from other media like comics, video games, books being represented in film)

Here's the deal, I wrote a bunch of stuff, then accidentally deleted it. It's 1:30 AM. We have a guest. His name is Scott and he joined us to talk about Space Jam: A New Legacy, Fear Street pt3 1666, John Mayers new album SOB Rock, and Gunpowder Milkshake. I'd write more teasers but I am tired. Listen.

Next week on Side B the Summer of 87 continues with Jaws: The Revenge. Superman The Quest For Peace, a historical suckfest that manages to make shark murders a superhero fighting a nuclear man boring. And our question of the week what are the worst versions of villains in film from other media?

We chose the Summer of 1987 due to a huge variety of fun movies to talk about Predator, Robocop, Adventures in Babysitting and... Jaws: The Revenge. OK you can't win them all. And Jaws 4 has become a running joke with its "shark seeking revenge plot"

This is one of those movies where the "making of" was way more entertaining than the movie itself. They managed to make the entire movie in 9 months from script to screen, and it shows. It also manages to be a movie about a giant man eating shark that is boring.

Join us and our special guest, Jaws expert, Alec Solomita!

The Question of the week based on Jaws: The Revenge. What are the best movies / most shocking deaths of a main character offscreen or between sequels?

We almost didn't have a Floridaman story for ya'll but Floridaman struck at the last second, swinging an alligator around like an ill-tempered pair of nunchucks.

Black Widow finally hit the theaters and streaming was it worth the wait. Also, Marvel, give Florence Pugh a raise.

Fear Street part 2 causes some carnage at camp Nightwing. Will it be helped or hurt by its reverse time order release?

And for you What We Do in the Shadows fans, Wellington Paranormal brings that dry New Zealand humor AND cows in trees.

Week 3 of the Summer of 87 saw the release of the sequel to Revenge of the Nerds. This film took the nerds to Ft Lauderdale to party with the other fraternities AND defend nerdom for all of us. (little did they know that nerd culture would be cool in a decade or two)

Yet another 80's movie where the heroes are terrible people when viewed through a modern lens, but still a few redeemable qualities in this movie.

Then stay tuned for our question of the week based on Revenge of the Nerds 2, What are the top 5 movies that took their cast on vacation for the sequels?

Fourth of July weekend is historically a big release weekend, and this weekend is no different, albeit on a slightly smaller scale.

After 4 years a brand new Boss Baby movie is out. Did they use that extra time to make it not suck?

Tomorrow war hit Amazon Prime this weekend. It has great action but will Rob find some issue with the time travel logic? (probably)

And we got to check out the first episode of Fear Street: 1994 a throwback horror slasher film from the mind of RL Stein. This is the first of 3 with an odd release schedule, so we discuss that.

Next week on Side B the Summer of 87 continues with Revenge of the Nerds 2: Nerds In Paradise and our question of the week. What are the best sequels that take their characters on vacation?

Week 2 of the Summer of 87, and we are hanging out with Thor in Chicago. Yes, Adventures in Babysitting came out on July 3rd 1987 and became an instant family classic.

So will this movie hold up as well as Elisabeth Shue has or will it deteriorate like an old station wagon? Listen to find out.

This week we talked about movies and pop culture that offend the sensitive palate of the Chinese censors, and will likely get banned as a result. That doesn't make us any less excited to see the surprise cameos in the Shang Chi trailer.

We also wrap up season 2 of Mythic Quest. If you haven't watched it, go get a subscription to Apple TV for a month and enjoy.

Omar checked out some light young adult reading that inexplicably involves a heroin mule, and Rob watched the latest Netflix exclusive The Ice Road, which does in fact involve an Ice Road.
