The Give Me Five Podcast: An Uncultured Look at Pop Culture and Nostalgia

Many years ago a little vampire movie came out and terrified young Greg. This movie gave him nightmares about "the vampire next door" Upon re-watch it turns out that Fright Night is actually a pretty decent horror movie. Other than the main character being a little bit of a pushy virgin who spies on his neighbor, but the effects are good and the story is fun. The movie has pretty good behind the scenes stories which the fine folks at the official Fright Night Wiki on Fandom have recorded as well.

Stay tuned for our question of the week based on the movie, what are the top 5 horror tv hosts real or fictional?

A little bit of horror, a little bit of comedy and a whole lot of comic chat. This week we have fun with the Muppets Haunted Mansion in which Gonzo the Great and Pepe the Prawn have to spend the night in THE haunted mansion. There's a new slasher and he's right behind you, in Netflix's There's Someone In Your House.

Omar checked out the comedy / drama Reservation Dogs by show favorite Taika Waititi. See if he was able to convince us to get on board.

Also Greg was brought out to the comic store by the hosts of another podcast, Last Podcast on the Left, for their fun horror comic Soul Plumber, released by the DC Horror imprint.

We also have a Patron birthday to celebrate! Yes, it is Patron Scott's birthday, so he is about to learn some things about himself via a custom patron birthday list!

Next week on Episode 210 Side B we review the vampire in the suburbs movie, Fright Night!

What is a CHUD? A Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dweller or Contamination Hazard Urban Disposal. Either way, in the 1984 film CHUD a bunch of genius businessmen decided that under the streets of New York would be the best place to leave a bunch of toxic waste. Hilarity and dead New Yorkers ensue.

See how our ragtag band of heroes led by 2 actors from Home Alone save the day... maybe.

Big movie releases this week. Venom Let There Be Carnage was released with it's special brand of violent humor. Does it's PG13 rating hurt the film? Are there any surprises at the end? (yes, and we do spoil it)

The Sopranos prequel film The Many Saints of Newark was released and while it doesn't exactly tell the story we expected, we have some differing opinions on the film.

Greg also read Nothin But A Good Time, a oral history of the 80's metal scene. It is a fascinating tale told through the eyes of the people that lived it. At least those that remember it.

And for those 80's metal and trivia fans, there will be a pretty difficult hair metal quiz. Hope you've got your doctorate in Feelgood.

Next week on Episode 208 Side B we review the cannibals living in the sewer movie, C.H.U.D!

In the mid 80's while on his way to the Philippines to film Platoon, Charley Sheen made a pitstop in Arizona to film the Wraith. A film in which he plays an avenging angel in a futuristic car hunting down members of a street racing gang that killed him. While this movie was sold as a revenge flick, there are plenty of 80s shenanigans and quite a few scenes that are horrifically misogynistic by todays standards. But it has Randy Quaid as a cop and Clint Howard as a chemical huffing gearhead. It also stars Sherilyn Fenn in a red bikini if you are into that sort of thing.

Stay tuned for our question of the week based on the movie, what are the top 5 coolest mystical / cursed modes of transportation?

October is here and we can celebrate it with Midnight Mass, the brand new limited series on Netflix by Mike Flanagan (Haunting of Hill House / Haunting of Bly Manor) Another interesting take on horror, loss and zealotry.

Squid Game is taking the world by storm and is set to become Netflix's most popular show world wide. Omar and Rob give us a breakdown of this Korean show where people face life or death odds to pay off debts.

Greg is fascinated by the new Halsey album produced by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross and Rob made it out to see Copshop in the theater.

Next week on Episode 206 Side B we review the posessed car revenge flick starring Charlie Sheen, 1986's The Wraith!

When we were young there were many movies that caught our imaginations. Star Wars made us all want to battle a galactic empire, Jurassic Park made us think that every bush the moved had a raptor hiding in it, Fast Times at Ridgemont High taught us about red bathing suits and The Last Starfighter made us belive that playing a video game could lead to an adventure in the stars.

We review The Last Starfighter this week on GMF. A fun movie that holds up despite very primitive special effects. While the effects look dated, at the time this movie was made the effects were not only state of the art, but they were ground breaking. This movie was the first time that cgi was used to show something other than visuals on a computer screen.

Stay tuned for our question of the week based on the movie, what old movies could use a VFX upgrade? (what old movies would be made better if the effects were better)

Characters based on survivors from classic horror movies being hunted down by yet another killer. Watching them work together to solve the mystery of who is hunting them yet again. That is the background of Grady Hendrix's novel Final Girl Support Group. But how good is the book?

A movie that took a long time to reach viewers, Boss Level, was it worth the wait or were the naysayers correct?

Also a new Steve Martin / Martin Short / Selena Gomez show on Hulu centered around true crime podcasts and a bulldog. How is Only Murders in the Building.

Next week on Episode 204 Side B we review a GOOD movie The Last Starfighter. Will it hold up?

What started as a conversation about a bad sexploitation film ends with a philosophical discussion about how many people (and cans of Red Bull) it would take to repopulate the planet.

Phoenix the Warrior is a movie full of big hair, big guns, big personalities, and a serious lack of wardrobe. Alternatively known as She-Wolves of the Wasteland, a post-apocalyptic story that features women that battle each other in various junkyards and gravel pits to determine the fate of the entire world.

Stay tuned for our question of the week based on the movie, what are the best gladiator fights in film?

We are back with episode 201 and a brand new season! Comedian Norm Macdonald passed away this week so we talk about his influence and some of his more interesting appearances.

We were gone for a few weeks so we jump right in and cover Shang Chi, the Marvel movie that none of us saw coming, Kate, the new Netflix hitwoman action film, and James Wan's latest horror flick Malignant. Scary, fun, or a stretch?

Next week on Episode 202 Side B we get back to crappy movies with Phoenix the Warrior! Dune buggies and boobs oh my!
