The Give Me Five Podcast: An Uncultured Look at Pop Culture and Nostalgia

200 Episodes of the Give Me Five Podcast! To celebrate we watch a cult classic favorite, Escape From New York. We are also inviting Derek Rook of Rough House Publishing to join us as he introduced Greg to the movie, and Greg then introduced Omar to the movie.

We talk about the film, John Carpenter, James Cameron, special effects, and we also take a few segues into conversations about horror comics and pulp novels. There also quite a bit of "Tales From New England" for those of you into that sort of thing.

As this is an anniversary episode, there's some reminiscing about past episodes and some surprises.

Stay tuned for our question of the week based on Escape From New York, who are the best anti-heroes in media?

It's been 200 episodes, and in honor of that feat, we are going back to episode one and talking about a few of our favorite things. It is also an opportunity to learn a little more about our newest host, Omar.

So in honor of episode 200 we will talk about Oliver Stone's The Doors movie and how it led Omar to a life of music.

Rob will discuss The Princess Bride and how it led to a life of redheads.

And Greg will talk about Pearl Jam Ten on its 30th anniversary and how it led to a life of spending way too much on concerts and posters.

Check out episode 200 Side A and be here for episode 200 Side B when we cover Escape from New York with Rough House Publishing's Derek Rook !

This episode is brought to you by the "For Baby Wilson 1978 Les Paul Auction" help support Baby Wilson and maybe win a killer guitar in the process. https://rafflecreator.com/pages/51291/for-baby-wilson

Closing out the Summer of 87 we ran into yet another sequel. If Jaws 4, Superman 4 and Revenge of the Nerds 2 wasn't bad enough, we also got House 2: The Second Story. That pun-tacular title doesn't remotely reveal what we had to endure with this movie. So be ready for baby pterodactyls, non-scary zombies and a very strange un-scary plot.

We start off this episode on a somber note, a fundraising raffle for a musician that lost his life. The money from this raffle will help his wife and unborn child. The giveaway as told to us by Zak is "a beautiful vintage 1978 Gibson Les Paul Pro with P90s. I toured all around the world with this guitar in both Alpha Rev and LīVE, I played this guitar on the latest LīVE release "717" on the song "Brother", Ed also borrowed this guitar on the 2017 reunion world tour and Played it in "Shittown""

After that moment of levity we get back to our usual idiocy, and talk about OnlyFans, Cocaine Cowboys, the Starz wrestling show Heels, and the latest Spider-Man Trailer.

The movie that took the world by storm in 1987, and had all of us cringing while our mom's talked about Patrick Swayze's butt. Yes, its Dirty Dancing, and oddly enough NONE of the 3 hosts had seen this movie. Partially because it was marketed towards women and 14 year old girls, and partially because it came out during the same summer as Predator, Robocop and to a lesser extent, Summer School.

This movie has a very interesting history and it is lucky that it was released at all. We discuss the making of the film, the story, the history of the borscht belt resorts and much more on episode 198.

Then stay tuned for our question of the week based on Dirty Dancing What are the top 5 dance movies?

This week 2 of the hosts broke into the liquor cabinet and the other one is apologizing on their behalf. We did hold it together enough to talk about the documentary Woodstock 99: Peace Love and Rage, Ryan Reynolds video game flick Free Guy, Val (about Val Kilmer) and a Netflix "old guys doing karate" movie Paper Tigers.

Next week on Side B the Summer of 87 continues with the 3 guys watching Dirty Dancing. What could possibly be better?

Let me guess, you forgot the Fat Boys existed? We did too. But when we continued down our path of the Summer of 87, we saw that Disorderlies was up next and we let out a collective "oh! I remember them!"

So check out our review of Disorderlies, a brief history of the Fat Boys, and yet another trip to Florida in the 80s.

Then stay tuned for our question of the week based on The Fat Boys, who are 5 celebrities that are known for their size?

What a great and interesting week for movies, comics, music and nostalgia! And those are the things we do best. A surprise Guns N Roses song is released to mixed reviews. The Suicide Squad is back under the watchful, disturbed eye of James Gunn, and What If? arrives on Disney+ to show other alternate stories in the Marvel Universe. All that and some fun Florida vehicular goodness.

Next week on Side B the Summer of 87 continues with the Fat Boys in Disorderlies!

When one decides to cover the movies of the summer of 1987, it is probably wise to look at the entire summer. After breezing past Predator, Robocop and Adventures in Babysitting, you will land on things like Care Bears Adventures in Wonderland, which is neither good or all that interesting at all. BUT we took that Care Bear stare right to the groin and we watched it for you people.

You are welcome.

Then stay tuned for our question of the week based on Care Bears Adventures in Wonderland, What are the top 5 movies loosely based on classic works of literature?

One of our hosts had some business to attend to (he got kicked by a mule, or did he?) So, we talk about Dwayne Johnson's new Disney movie, The Jungle Cruise, a new show on Disney Plus Behind the Attractions, and the book Disciple of War by Michael G Manning. But we also talk a little bit of wrestling with the potential reappearance of CM Punk in AEW and the release of Bray Wyatt from WWE. We make it entertaining for you noin wrestling people.

Next week on Side B the Summer of 87 continues with .... sigh.... Care Bears Adventure in Wonderland. (Look, we gotta do the summer of 87 for better or worse)
