The Give Me Five Podcast: An Uncultured Look at Pop Culture and Nostalgia

It's flannel season, and with it comes Greg going back to the 90's to listen to Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden. This time however he happened upon a great bok about Soundgarden's Chris Cornell. Total F***ing Godhead is a biography that takes you through the early life of Chris Cornell through his bands Soundgarden and Audioslave as well as his solo work. But do the lack of interviews due to lawsuits hurt the book?

Rob started his mini Marathon of Christmas horror with Slay Belles, and Greg finally read 2018's DCeased graphic novel, (which by the way would make an excellent Christmas gift)

Due to the unfortunate happenings on The Mandalorian, we decided to do the Give Me Five question early this week. What are the top 5 most shocking vehicle destructions in film and TV?

Then, join the boys on Monday for a review of the Nazi Christmas Horror film from 1989, Elves.

Karate was HUGE in the 80's, and for a brief Mary Löu Retton inspired moment, so was gymnastics. So what could possibly go wrong when you combine the 2 of them into a spy film involving a Hunger Gamesesque death race in the cheese monikered nation of Parmestan. Starring Kurt Thomas, Gymkata will pose the question, how much gymnastics equipment can be found in a small antiquated country?

We've heard several things from our listeners. Things like: "why aren't you talking about the Mandalorian?" "Why haven't you talked about Baby Yoda?" "Don't you think Baby Yoda is cute?!" and "How is Rob not in prison for that thing he did with those sheep?"

Well, our answers are, in order, we didn't want to spoil anything and get lost in the shuffle of 800 other Mandalorian podcasts, we always talk about baby Yoda, but his name is Grogu, hes adorable. And of course, our lawyers have suggested not using Robs name in the same sentence as the phrase "those sheep".

Anyway, this week we cover Christmas Chronicles 2, does it live up to the warm feeling of the first one, we chat a bit about Bosch (even though it is in season 7) and of course FINALLY discuss the Mandalorian.

Then, join the boys on Monday for a review of Gymkata, the Godfather of gymnastics karate movies set in fictional middle eastern countries.

Most of the time, the guys pick a random film from the 80s and it turns out to be comically bad. Sometimes, it turns out to be pretty okay. That's the case this week when Greg picked the 1986 film Vicious Lips. Tune in to find out what's so okay about it!

It's Thanksgiving! Be happy?

Well it's a 2020 Thanksgiving and we are celebrating by watching depressing stuff. Purely by accident. For example Jimmy chose something called The Dark and the Wicked, which is in fact dark and wicked. Greg spent some time learning about all the atrocities of World War 2, and Rob, would have probably preferred that over the poorly made Dragon's Dogma. But remember, angry Rob is funny Rob.

Next Monday, check out side B when we cover Vicious Lips, an 80's space hair metal adventure from 1986. (yeah we never heard of it either)

The sequel was so bad they skipped it. That's what they say anyway... Rob and Jimmy dissect Thankskilling 3 on this Side B episode and well, it's not good. So, to save you the trouble of actually watching the movie and listen to what these guys have to say.

You guessed it. Rob still doesn't have a Playstation 5! The guys are a man down this week with Greg out. Join Rob and Jimmy as they discuss the Playstation 5, or lack thereof, Amnesia: Rebirth, The Sleepover and the Art of the Adept book series.

Then, join the boys on Monday for a review of Thankskilling 3 instead of actually watching it. Trust us, it's not good.

Really good stuff this week. A comic series that has come out over the past 3 months Three Jokers has culminated with a great wrap up issue that MAY change the DC universe forever. Even if it doesn't its fantastic and Greg highly suggests picking it up. (available at the link at the bottom of the page)

Rob found an interesting film that had slipped through the cracks, Eli on Netflix.

And Greg loves everything about Ted Lasso from the tone, the escapism, the British sensibilities. He absolutely can't wait to get into a local pub again.

Next Monday, check out side B when we cover an 80's favorite The Gate, with writer Joe Ballarini (Babysitter's Guide to Monster Hunting)
