The Give Me Five Podcast: An Uncultured Look at Pop Culture and Nostalgia episodes

  • Episode 33 It's YOR! Birthday, Rob.

In the early 80's there was a glut of barbarian movies. And things were good. Then came Star Wars, and things were better. But then someone decided to combine the two and things didn't quiet work out so well. On episode 33, we celebrate Rob's birthday with his specially curated episode about his favorite things. Men in loin cloths killing dinosaurs and tv theme songs from his childhood.

We also discuss one of Robs favorite book series, Furies of Calderon, book 1 of The Codex Alera, by Jim butcher

Greg managed to sneak in a bit of spoiler-free conversation about A Quiet Place.

Then of course the question of the week which is less of a question and more of a game:

Guess these 5 80's and 90's TV Themes?

    Segment times:

Snap Decisions: 8:21 A Quiet Place: 16:40 Codex Alera: Furies of Calderon: 25:30 Yor: 41:21 The Question/Game: 1:17:50

  • Episode 32 - We Don't Die, We Multiply

Nostalgia is our game and the movie Ready Player One is steeped in it. From Akira to Terminator to Krull, Ready Player One had more references than you can wrap your head around. But was it good? Listen to our podcast to hear our takes. We also check out the sweet giant robot vs. kaiju action of Pacific Rim: Uprising, and we terrify Rob with the latest release by GosT.

Our Snap Decisions cover haunting cover songs and The Last Starfighter and of course our question of the week.

Which 5 pop culture vehicles would you like to own?

Opening theme: Outrun This! by Arcade High. Available on Bandcamp

  • Episode 31 Murderous Hobos feat. CS Humble

Welcome to the Weird West! Terror awaits in the desolate dusty land that called to intrepid pioneers in search of gold.

Sounds pretty intense, right? Well I just wanted to write a description worthy of the excellent guest we had this week, C.S. Humble, the author of The Massacre at Yellow Hill. The interview was so engaging we scuttled our plans to review Pacific Rim and the new GosT album. We also reviewed the novel as well

Give it a listen and check out:

  • Episode 30 Do All Video Game Movies Suck?

Remember that really good movie based on a video game? Yeah we don't either, but the Tomb Raider movie series rebooted this week and 2 of us had the opportunity to see it. Meanwhile, Greg was getting deep into the history and life of Thomas Edison reading 2 books to see 2 different perspectives on whether Edison was genius or thief (or both). Also Jimmy checked out the Netflix docuseries Flinttown.

Then of course the question of the week:

What are the 5 best and 5 worst video game movies?

19:40 Flint Town 26:32 Last Days of Night/Wizard of Menlo Park 34:35 Tomb Raider 47:45 Question

  • Episode 29 Pinball Prohibition

Games were on our mind this week. Between Greg's visit to the Silverball Pinball Museum, Rob checking out Monster Hunter World, or Jimmy re-visiting Game Night we all had something to say. We also checked out the "scariest Netflix's movie ever", Veronica (it isn't the scariest ever, but it is good) It also featured a Ouija board keeping with our theme. For a little change of pace we checked out the horror-in-the-ancient-woods movie The Ritual too.

What are your 5 favorite game night games?

    Times:

    22:25 Veronica
