  • Episode 28 The Snorlax Pit

This week we switch from fantasy to sci-fi, with a little bit of dark comedy sprinkled in. In the streaming world we added Altered Carbon to our "stack". This Netflix original, based on a book series by Richard K. Morgan was beautifully made and set in a Blade Runner-esque world. It was entertaining and left us with quite a few thoughts on the idea of re-sleeving your memory into new bodies and the idea of soul. We also kept it going with dystopian futures with the Netflix film Mute. Rob let us know his opinion on game night, and Greg and Jimmy checked out Annihilation and we liked it but there were a few parts that left us feeling a bit twisted up inside. So unsettled, in fact, it led to our question of the week.

What are the 5 most unsettling scenes in movies you have seen?

    Times:

    17:35 Altered Carbon
    41:43 Mute
    47:28 Game Night
    53:38 Annihilation
    1:07:37 The Question

Oh and we have a store! Check out our shirts, mugs, bags and phone cases here: Buy cool crap!

And you can always reach us at [email protected] or at our Facebook Page : https://www.facebook.com/givemefivepodcast/

  • Ep 27 Large Dudes on Green Tigers - feat Richard A Knaak

On our very first episode, Jimmy told us that The Legend of Huma was the book that made him fall in love with reading and fantasy fiction. So we reached out to the author of that book and many others, including books in the Dragonlance, World of Warcraft, Conan, and Diablo lines as well as his own series Dragonrealm and The Black City Saints. Richard was gracious enough to answer all of our questions and of course to deal with Jimmy gushing over his work.

We also discuss the latest entertainment news and Rob's excursion to the Bay Area Renaissance Festival

Join us to hear Richard A. Knaak's answer to the question of the week:

What are your 5 favorite fantasy universes?

    Times:

  • Episode 26 Werewolf Ninja Curse

This week was Jimmy's birthday and he got to curate the episode And when Jimmy curates an episode that means Ninjas (and Black Panther) We discuss the 1993 anime film Ninja Scroll, The Black Panther movie, Gates of Fire (an account of the Battle of Thermopylae) and music from the metal band Harakiri For the Sky.

Our question sticks with the ninja theme, focusing on the best martial arts movies of the 1980's, all of which should be Bloodsport.

    Segment Times:

    23:30 Black Panther
1:03:43 Harakiri for the Sky - Arson
    1:10 Ninja Scroll
    1:18:55 Gates of Fire
    1:31:34 The Question

Our opening theme "Take Me Back" is by Kalax, an excellent cinematic Retrowave artist from Liverpool. His album Metropolis (and others) can be purchased here: Kalax

  • Episode 25 Virtual Insanity

We are back and Jimmy is as surly as ever. We finally got a chance to check out the hyper-reality experience The Void: Star Wars Secrets of the Empire. In short, it is really worth the hype. Also, we chat about the new album by metal band Tribulation, the musical film The Greatest Show on Earth, and the Oscar nominations.

Join us for the question of the week:

  • Episode 24 And Knowing is Half The Battle

Children of the eighties remember rushing home to catch GI Joe cartoons on TV. Seeing the toys that they played with brought to life was magical and of course the commercials revealed more figures and vehicles to collect. In the eighties there were Star Wars kids, He-Man kids, Transformer kids and of course GI Joe kids. We were the latter.

The Netflix documentary series "The Toys That Made Us" brought back great memories of Sky Strikers, Night Ravens, hovercrafts and mute ninjas. And the Give Me Five guys wanted to reminisce about their favorite action figures.

Rather than just talk about what toys we had, we enlisted Kirk Bozigian, the former product manager for the GI Joe line at Hasbro from 1982 - 1994, and the basis for the Law action figure.

We chatted with Kirk about his time at Hasbro, his experience with the GI Joe line, and his disdain for the Star Wars toys of the 70's and 80's. He even graciously shared stories about the figures and how GI Joe rose to the top.

He also joined us for the question(s),

What are your 5 favorite GI Joe figures?

    And

What are your five favorite GI Joe vehicles?

We learned a ton about our favorite toys, and remember knowing is half the battle!
