This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE!

Originally constructed in 1839, the haunted Eloise Asylum was designed to be a place of refuge for the souls that society didn’t want to see. The mentally ill, rejected, poor, sick, and those that didn’t fit the mold of being “normal” would call the Eloise Asylum home. For over 100 years, the campus would grow to 75 buildings and house more than 8,000 patients at its peak. Eventually, the United States government chose to massively defund care for the mentally ill, which would result in the closing of the Elouise Asylum in the 1980s. At this time, the spirits of those who called Eloise home would find the silence a perfect platform to be heard again by the living.

DeAnna Simpson thought she was about to embark on a fresh new chapter in her life. Little did she know that the next chapter would be The Hanover Haunting. After finding what she believed was her dream home, she quickly discovered that she had entered a nightmare. After a few strange incidents, a priest was brought in for a simple home blessing. Only to have the priest storm out of the home, leaving burn marks on the floor. DeAnna was locked in for a ride that would include strange and unexplained whispering late at night, doors slamming and opening on their own, unexplained shadows lurking down the hall, plagues of locusts descending on their home, and more.

In desperation, DeAnna reached out to anyone who would listen and offer a possible solution to her Hanover Haunting nightmare. However, not everyone who wanted to capture “evidence” left them in a better position than when they entered the home. Fighting dark forces takes far more than just investigators who could prove what she said was real. The demons still refused to leave her home.

July 06, 2023 The Squirrel Cage Jail, Part Two | Guest Kat Slaughter
In the 1880s, the Squirrel Cage Jail in Council Bluffs, Iowa, was considered a revolutionary concept in housing inmates. They claimed the new concept allowed for "maximum security with minimum jailer attention."

It was a "19th-century marvel,” constructed so that only one jailor could keep an eye on an entire prison full of prisoners. The cells were all positioned on a central carousel that, when a hand crank was turned, would rotate the cells so that only one could be entered at a time. However, it didn’t take long to realize this concept didn’t work as they thought it would. While the jailer could attend to one cell – the others were simply trapped. Of the 18 prisons built, most were closed within a couple of years after opening – however – the Squirrel Cage Jail remained in operation until 1969.

But it seems some of those who were once there are still there. Reports of hauntings date back to the 1950s when a jailor refused to sleep in his quarters because he believed it to be haunted. In Part Two of our conversation, we talk about the hauntings of the Squirrel Cage Jail and the Railswest Railroad Museum with Kat Slaughter, the director of both museums.
