The Grave Talks | Haunted, Paranormal & Supernatural

In the 1880s, the Squirrel Cage Jail in Council Bluffs, Iowa, was considered a revolutionary concept in housing inmates.  They claimed the new concept allowed for "maximum security with minimum jailer attention."  

It was a "19th-century marvel,” constructed so that only one jailor could keep an eye on an entire prison full of prisoners. The cells were all positioned on a central carousel that, when a hand crank was turned, would rotate the cells so that only one could be entered at a time. However, it didn’t take long to realize this concept didn’t work as they thought it would. While the jailer could attend to the one cell – the others were simply trapped. Of the 18 prisons built, most were closed within a couple of years after opening – however – the Squirrel Cage Jail remained in operation until 1969.

But it seems some of those who were once there are still there. Reports of hauntings date back to the 1950s when a jailor refused to sleep in his quarters because he believed it to be haunted. Today, the behemoth known as the Castle on the Cumberland still houses hundreds of inmates and staff working to keep the worst of society behind its walls. Quite a feat for a structure completed in 1886 and still in operation today. The Haunted Kentucky State Penitentiary is still home to Kentucky's death row inmates and houses the execution facility.

Brodhead, Wisconsin, is a small, peaceful town in the southern part of the state. It might come across as a town without much going on – but it has plenty of activity. Paranormal activity. Some people believe the whole town is haunted.

One of the main haunted locations is Brodhead Manor. Brodhead Manor was built as a school, with the first school built on the site in 1896. The 60,000 square foot brick structure on 10th street is home to a haunted, HAUNTED house. At Halloween, visitors come from all over to get scared at the haunted attraction, but the hauntings happen year-round. Many former students, teachers, principals, and even a janitor still roam the halls of their former school.

In the 1870s, the town of Garnett, Kansas, was a crossroads of a new world. Settlers, cowboys, criminals, and the righteous all passed through this now-forgotten town. Some notable characters of the day included Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, Wild Bill Hickock, Buffalo Bill Cody, Belle Star, Jesse James, and many others who have all stayed at the Garnett House Hotel. And some of those guests never left. Screams in the night have been heard on EVP recordings taken at the Haunted Garnett House. One of the most disturbing elements of these screams is that they appear to come from a child. Who is this child? And what this child needed remains unknown. However, these screams are far from a one-time occurrence.
