  • Ep. 62: David Schrader (Baby Badass)

On this badass Hall H Show podcast episode, Aaron Nabus welcomes the writer and co-creator of the comic book, Baby Badass, David Schrader!

David is a writer/filmmaker with deep roots in the LA alternative comedy scene. He has an extensive background in stand-up, sketch and improv.

What makes this episode badass, is that we offer not just one...but two interviews with him! The first one features my conversation with him from San Diego Comic-Con 2018 where we discussed the first arc of Baby Badass. The second one is from WonderCon 2019, where we talked about the second arc, Baby Badass Returns!

That's right, Action Lab Danger Zone's cult favorite dystopian sci-fi grindhouse action comic book about a superhuman baby killing machine is back!

While recently fully funded on Kickstarter, the campaign actually ends on 4/18/19. So if you support indie comics or are looking for something to spend some of you tax refund on, check it out!

  • Ep. 61: Travis Rivas

Aaron Nabus and Alex Benedicto from the Hall H Show welcomes comic book writer (Unstoppable Cherub), editor of the Super-Abled Comics anthology and disability advocate, Travis Rivas to the podcast!

Travis was just on episode 60 where he was joined by a few of the Accidental Aliens, to promote their 2019 anthology – which was successfully funded on Kickstarter!

He is back to talk about a project (Super-Abled Comics anthology) that is near and dear to his heart since he was born with TAR syndrome (thrombocytopenia with absent radius), a rare genetic disorder that is characterized by the absence of the radius bone in the forearm.

While they have also been successfully funded on Kickstarter, please check it out and support their stretch goals:

  • Ep. 59: Tristan Whitehouse (San Diego Comic-Con 2018)

Hey there Hall H Show listeners!

Aaron Nabus here and we're continuing our journey back to San Diego Comic-Con 2018 with my conversation with Tristan Whitehouse from the comic book creating group, The Accidental Aliens.

At the time of this recording, he had just gotten out of panel featuring The Accidental Aliens at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 and he was in the middle of completing his first comic book, "The Adventures of Terrik Zion," which is now finished so please check it out!

It was great getting to know Tristan a bit more as we have spoken to each other before at other conventions and events. So I hope you enjoy this conversation I had with him and...as the faithful listeners that you are, will continue to support indie comic book creators like Tristan and the other members of The Accidental Aliens.

  • Ep. 58: Rob Salkowitz (San Diego Comic-Con 2018)

Aaron Nabus here and one my personal heroes when it comes to covering pop culture and comic books is Forbes writer and author of the book, "Comic-Con and the Business of Pop Culture," Rob Salkowitz.

On this episode, which was recorded at San Diego Comic-Con 2018, we got to talk about the first comic book he read, "The Spirit" by Will Eisner, which was given to him by his father; his connection to underground comic legend, Dennis Kitchen; his journey to becoming a writer for Forbes; the future of comics and how we can be better advocates for diversity.

As someone who has been coming to San Diego Comic-Con since the late 90's, watching it explode from 35,000 to well over 135,000 attendees in less than a decade, it was great to hear Rob's perspective.

Thanks again for being on the Hall H Show, Rob and I look forward to our next conversation!

  • Ep. 57: Arlen Schumer (San Diego Comic-Con 2018)

On the last episode, episode 56, we learned a bit about Arlen Schumer, comic book historian, author, illustrator and graphic designer from my interview with him that was recorded at Palm Springs Comic-Con 2017.

On this episode, recorded at San Diego Comic-Con 2018, we learn more about his three pop culture "children,"

Bruce Springsteen, The Twilight Zone and the Silver Age of Comic Books.

We also talk about his argument of the racism concerning Black Panther's mask, auter theory of comics as it pertains to Jack Kirby and other artists like Steve Ditko who should have their rightful creative credit attributed to them, self sacrifice and what it is to be a man.

This is one powerful and moving podcast as Arlen got real and vulnerable with me just like his idol, Bruce Springsteen was with him...and I love him for it. Enjoy! ~Aaron

  • Ep. 56: Arlen Schumer (Palm Springs Comic-Con 2017)

Aaron Nabus here and one thing I love about podcasting is being able to connect with and share the stories of incredible people in the pop culture and comic book universe.

One such person is the brilliant silver age comic book historian, illustrator, author and fellow graphic designer, Arlen Schumer.

This episode was recorded at Palm Springs Comic-Con 2017 just before Arlen was set to give a VisuaLecture about the 25th Anniversary of Batman the Animated Series.

I enjoyed our conversation that covered meeting his boyhood idol, Neal Adams at 15 years old and then working for him 10 years later...which is an important part of Arlen's life since he lost his own father at young age and considered Neal Adams as a father figure.

We also talk about Jim Steranko, another one of his comic book idols that he almost ended up working for as well; our mutual graphic design hero, Saul Bass; why he calls his presentations, "VisuaLectures;" Jack Kirby, Black Panther, the lack of Asian heroes and leading men and more!

If you will be at San Diego Comic Fest 2019, which takes place March 7-10, you won't want to miss Arlen's four VisuaLectures covering:

    • The 50th Anniversary of Jim Steranko's Captain America
    • Steve Ditko
    • The 60th Anniversary of The Twilight Zone
    • 50 Years of Neal Adams' Batman

Thanks for listening to episode 56 of the Hall H Show featuring my friend, Arlen Schumer...and for episode 57 you'll get even more of Arlen as I had the good fortune of sitting down with him for a few hours at San Diego Comic-Con 2018...enjoy!

  • Ep. 55: Matt Dunford (San Diego Comic Fest 2019 Preview)

It's the start of the convention season and we couldn't think of a better way to welcome it's return than inviting back the current chairman of one of our favorite cons, San Diego Comic Fest, Matt Dunford!

San Diego Comic Fest 2019 takes place on March 7-10, at the Four Points by Sheraton on Aero Dr. in San Diego, CA.

The emphasis at San Diego Comic Fest is on comics, science fiction and movies, served up with a sense of community that brings professional writers and artists together with fans in an environment of creative exchange.

This year's theme will be the celebration of when science fiction became science fact...it's the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing!

Welcome back to the show, Matt!

  • Ep. 54: Lord Mesa

If you are an avid comic convention goer, you've probably seen the awesome and unique artwork of Lord Mesa.

You've also probably seen the long lines at his booth!

With his eye catching stylized art inspired from shows such as Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, Supernatural, comic books, anime and pop culture movies, it's no wonder that he has such a large following.

Which is why we thought it would be a good idea to talk with him before it got to busy first thing in the morning when we visited him at WonderCon 2018.

This episode is also available on Google Play, iTunes, Stitcher, iHeart Radio and Spotify.

    Happy New Year!

On this episode, we welcome back one of our favorite indie creators, Keithan Jones! Keithan is the owner of KID Comics and the creator of the comic book, The Power Knights. If you've been a long time listener of the show, you'll know that he felt he owed his 11 year old self the opportunity to bring this idea to fruition.

We'll catch up on the latest issue, cover some our highlights of 2018 and we'll also talk about another project that Keithan has created, "Black Comix Day: Heroes Rise II", which will happen on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 10 AM – 5 PM at the very location we are recording this podcast, the Valencia Park / Malcolm X Library in San Diego, CA.
