Painter. Sculptor. Street art muralist. Gmonik, a San Diego, CA based artist is all that and more.
Aaron Nabus here and on this final Hall H Show edition of our interviews from last year's DesignerCon 2017, we had the honor of spending some time getting to know Gmonik.
Though this wasn't the first time we had met him. He has established himself as a creative force in the local San Diego art community and we would occasionally see him and his partner in crime, Danielle at various events.
Unlike other booths at DesignerCon, their booth was very welcoming, almost like it was room inside their own home...which I think was intentional since it showcased his sculptures rather nicely.
While we talked, I got the sense that he, like his sculptures had a very deep underlying message.
Interestingly, in a San Diego City Beat article from a few years ago, he described his style as "trash pop" which gave him the opportunity to simultaneously provide nostalgia and social commentary. In this article, he said:
"I want to make it presentable in a sense that it's fun, but then if you really look at it and really evaluate it, it has deeper meaning. Anybody can make pretty pictures, but having something to say makes it more meaningful for me."
We hope you enjoy our DesignerCon 2017 conversation with Gmonik.
If you will be attending this year's DesignerCon 2018, which takes place in Anaheim, CA, November 16-18, 2018, make sure to stop by booth 337.

Exclusive collectible products, inspired by roots, culture, art and music.
That is the tagline of Watermoon Studios, which is owned and operated by Andy Lorenzana, an artist and designer from San Diego, CA.
His custom "Barrel Man" line of collectibles is all about taking something old and familiar, especially if you are Filipino and giving it a unique pop culture spin. This is definitely evident with the many influences in his art work such as of A Tribe Called Quest, Marvel, Star Wars and even Lapu-Lapu, considered by many to be the first Filipino hero for his resistance of Spanish colonization.
It's been great to see Andy's offerings grow as he continues to have fun experimenting, refining the design process and also seeing people's first reaction when they lift up the barrel.
On behalf of my co-host, Alex Benedicto, I'm Aaron Nabus and we hope you enjoy our DesignerCon 2017 interview with Andy Lorenzana. Please also check out the video version of this conversation on our YouTube channel or the blog post for this episode on our website, HallH.com.
If you will be attending DesignerCon 2018, which takes place in Anaheim, CA, November 16-18, 2018, make sure to stop by booth 2234, which he will be sharing with fellow artist, Pett Project.

We hope you've been enjoying our DesignerCon 2017 interviews. One thing that we've noticed at DesignerCon is the growing presence of 3D printed art.
How fortunate for us that David White, the owner of Mecha Zone and the creator of the Mechanauts and Predanauts 3D printed line of toys, spent some time out of his busy day at last year's DesignerCon to talk about his passion for this growing medium.
We enjoyed this conversation with him and look forward to seeing him again at this year's DesignerCon 2018, which takes place in Anaheim, CA, November 16-18, 2018.
Make sure to check him out at booth 2530 and also check out the video version of this interview, which also includes some footage of some of his creations on our YouTube channel or the blog post for this episode on our website, HallH.com.

We continue our travel back into the past with our next DesignerCon 2017 interview with Stockton, CA based artist, Lori Herbst.
Lori uses various mediums including assorted textiles, vinyl upholstery, and stencil backgrounds to create photo realistic sewn portraits.
We were impressed with the variety of pop culture references that she uses for inspiration. From creations based on Johnny Depp's Ed Wood and Mike Colter's Luke Cage to the Dick Van Dyke show, her artwork has been purchased and enjoyed by many people around the world.
It was a pleasure to have her on the Hall H Show last year. If you will be going to DesignerCon 2018 this year, please visit her at booth 910, which she will be sharing with Huggable Koi and Chris Shary.
If you would like to watch the video version of the conversation with Lori, please check out our YouTube channel. We will also have the video on the page for this episode on our site, HallH.com.
On behalf of my co-host, Alex Benedicto, I'm Aaron Nabus and thank you so much for listening and please remember to support independent creators like Lori Herbst!

Hey there fellow nerds, geeks and supporters of independent creators!
We are excited to attend this year's DesignerCon 2018 which will take place in Anaheim, CA, November 16-18, 2018.
If you are no stranger to the Hall H Show, you'll know that DesignerCon is one of our favorite conventions since it's basically one mega artist alley.
Episodes 48 through 52 will showcase a few interviews that we did last year at DesignerCon 2017.
First up is Tony Tran, a returning guest and is someone we look forward to seeing every year since he is constantly evolving.
Speaking of evolving, he was formerly known as "ClayNext" and has rebranded to "Tranimated" in order to broaden the way he can express himself artistically.
On this episode, he is joined by his girlfriend, Selena Lin and collaborator on "Bob the Time Traveler," a project that includes a published book and set of short stories that encourages children to have a healthier lifestyle.
If you will be at this year's DesignerCon, please visit Tranimated at booth 818 (he'll be sharing it with fellow artist, Steve Minty).
In addition to this audio podcast, please check out our YouTube channel for the video version of this conversation.
And now...on the show and thanks for listening! ~Aaron

Aaron Nabus here and on this episode of the Hall H Show, we reconnect with one of my favorite comic book creators...well just one of my favorite creatives period, Stephan Franck, at WonderCon 2018. He's always willing to make time for his fans and his interviews are always fun and informative. So I appreciate him taking the time to talk with me, especially at a busy con like WonderCon.
On this episode, we discuss his love for the noir genre, which is a huge influence on his comic book, Silver. (which currently has a Kickstarter going on for volume 4 that ends on June 28, 2018)
We also touch on The Iron Giant Panel that he did at WonderCon...especially the technical challenges of melding CG and traditional animation in the 90's. The audio of this panel has been included at the end of the interview (video version is on our website, HallH.com)
I hope you enjoy my conversation with Stephan Franck! If you are ever at a con make sure to check out his panels and go meet him in person at his Dark Planet Comics booth!
"We Empower Kids to Outsmart Poverty" is such an empowering and motivational statement.
In fact, it's the mission statement of Traveling Stories, a San Diego, CA non-profit organization. They believe that books are a necessity, not a luxury, that the ability to read and write is a human right and there is more than one kind of poverty and more than one kind of hunger.
While it's important to feed a child's stomach, you mustn't forget about their mind and imagination.
Through their mobile StoryTent program, which has successfully served over 3,000 local San Diego kids a year, they teach kids money management skills and help them fall in love with reading by the 4th grade.
We are honored to have the Founder and CEO of Traveling Stories, Emily Moberly on episode 43 of the Hall H Show podcast!
On this episode, we talk about her origin story, her journey that lead to her starting Traveling Stories, what her favorite book is and THE ULTIMATE 2018 COMIC-CON® EXPERIENCE Sweepstakes that they are offering in conjunction with IDW and Comic-Con International!
Here's what you get in this incredible prize package:
This Comic-Con® sweepstakes is a complete package. Minimum entry $10 gives you 10 entries, which coincidentally is the cost of providing a reading program for one child for a month.
You have until Wednesday June 13, 2018, before the drawing at 3pm PDT to enter, so go to https://travelingstories.org/comic-con-sweeps/ right after you listen to our inspirational conversation with Emily! Enjoy!
