In this episode, Dr. Bob welcomes Peter Gray back to the Hamilton Review. Peter goes into detail about the importance of children having time and freedom to play - playing is their job and it is critical for parents to honor that. With the rise of technology, increased screen time, less opportunity to explore the outdoors and now a worldwide pandemic, children are at an increased risk for depression, ADHD and even suicide. Peter also talks about his non profit organization, Let Grow. Let Grow equips parents, educators, and communities with the tools and confidence to raise independent kids who are ready to succeed in our ever-changing world.
Friends, this is an important discussion for anyone with children in their life, don't miss part two of this conversation.
Peter Gray is a research professor of psychology at Boston College who has conducted and published research in neuroendocrinology, developmental psychology, anthropology, and education. He is author of an internationally acclaimed introductory psychology textbook (Psychology, Worth Publishers, now in its 8th edition), which views all of psychology from an evolutionary perspective. His recent research focuses on the role of play in human evolution and how children educate themselves through play and exploration, when they are free to do so. He has expanded on these ideas in his book, Free to Learn: Why Unleashing the Instinct to Play Will Make Our Children Happier, More Self-Reliant, and Better Students for Life (Basic Books). He also authors a regular blog called Freedom to Learn, for Psychology Today magazine. He is one of the founders of the nonprofit Alliance for Self-Directed Education and of the nonprofit Let Grow, the mission of which is to renew children's freedom to play and explore independently of adult control.

In this episode, Dr. Bob has a wonderful conversation with his long time friend and colleague, Dr. Dennis Woo. In this episode, Dr. Bob and Dr. Woo talk about his journey into pediatrics and his long time successful career. They take a deep dive into parenting and Dr. Woo wisely tells us: "Good parents become students of their children." They also discuss loving and accepting your children for who they are. There are so many nuggets of wisdom in this conversation and you will be blessed and enlightened by this episode.
Dr. Dennis Woo was born and raised in San Francisco, California and remain an avid San Francisco sports fan.
Below is Dr. Woo's wonderful bio in his own words:
Even though my parents were not Christians, they insisted that my siblings and I attend our neighborhood church. By the grace of God, I became a believer at the age of thirteen and grew up in the church. Attending college at UC Berkeley during the tumultuous Vietnam war period made me realize how much the world needed Christ. After finishing medical school and residency in Southern California, I joined a pediatric practice in Santa Monica. After 41 fulfilling years of practice, I retired in 2019. I have had numerous opportunities to participate in medical missions overseas and thank God for the chance to share the love of Christ with others. God has blessed me with a wonderful wife, 3 children, and 2 grandchildren.

Lenore Skenazy, (President of Let Grow and founder of the Free Range Kids Movement) author of "Free Range Kids" is back for part two of her conversation with Dr. Bob. In this episode, Lenore walks us through why free play is critical for kids and they talk in depth about her organization, "Let Grow." Let Grow asserts that:
Kids aren't fragile, they are "anti-fragile" - built not just to withstand some challenges, but to grow stronger once they do. The world is not more dangerous today than in decades past. In fact, America is at a 50-year crime low. Doing a little less for our kids is not negligent or lazy. It is a vote of confidence in them.
Don't miss part two of this fascinating conversation with Lenore Skenazy!
Lenore Skenazy is co-founder and president of Let Grow, a nonprofit promoting childhood independence and resilience. Ever since her column "Why I Let My 9-Year-Old Ride the Subway Alone" created a media firestorm, Lenore has been declaring that our kids are smarter and stronger than our culture gives them credit for. She is the author of Free-Range Kids, the book-turned-movement that got her the nickname, "America's Worst Mom." You may have seen her on The Today Show, The Daily Show, Dr. Phil, or her own Discovery TV reality show, World's Worst Mom. At Let Grow, Lenore oversees school programs, an online community, legislative efforts and myth-busting, all promoting the idea that when adults step back, kids step up. Plus, for the record, she used to write for Mad Magazine! A point of pride.
