In this week's episode I have the pleasure of being joined by Dr Emilie Wilson.
Emilie is a Naturopathic doctor and, more importantly, she's also the author of "POST: The Essential Guide to Creating Your Postpartum Self-Care Plan in Pregnancy" .
We are talking about the importance of planning for your postpartum life during your pregnancy.
As I've mentioned before; the more you plan for things going well, and things potentially not going great, the easier your postpartum life (and mental health) will be.
Emilie talks us through the things to focus on and one or two things that very often get overlooked.
We speak about Postpartum Depression and Anxiety and how preparing for everything early on can really help if you are unfortunate enough to be one of the many women who suffer from this.
Emilie also explains how to set up a good support network and how to bring the family in successfully.
As always when discussing these things we also talk about the gaps there are in the healthcare system, how it could be improved, and how to navigate your way through that yourself.
Her book is a tremendous reference work and you can download a FREE guide that actually helps you out a lot already here
You can find her in all the right places;

Did you know that overtraining/undereating and and the exercise/food balance can impact your menstrual cycle, bone health, and mental health?
Especially for women who's body has just gone through an intense, and often traumatic, experience like pregnancy and giving birth this can really have a huge impact on your health.
You're seemingly doing "everything right" yet feel like you're struggling all the time and even your menstrual cycle can get messed up.
RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport) is much more common in postpartum women than you might think and Allison Yamamoto has very kindly agreed to come onto my little show to talk about this.
We talk about the causes of RED-S.
How society's pressures on women can cause women to, unknowingly, be sabotaging their own health.
How a "I have to do everything" approach is actually holding you back and impacting your health.
How a workaholic lifestyle, which most postpartum women have (when's the last time YOU had a break?) leads to issues
And, of course, we discuss the solution!
Allison is absolutely amazing and I have no doubt you'll be very happy that you listened to this episode.

You keep asking about postpartum backpain so we keep talking about it :)
This week I have the pleasure of being joined by David Jeter who is an awesome physical therapist. We're talking post-partum back-pain and the benefits of physical therapy and exercise generally.
We discuss many, many things including;
What is post-partum back pain and what causes it?
Is surgery THE solution?
Why is post-partum backpain soo often ignored by both the medical community and those suffering from it?
Why are people not aware just how effective physical therapy is to deal with back-pain?
How the PT community is doing a terrible job of promoting the benefits of exercise and is spending too much time selling cheap-tricks.
And how you can help yourself if you're suffering from any sort of muscle related pain.
As always; HPNB still only has 5 billing cycles.

Wouldn't it be nice if postpartum recovery was included in the NHS services, as they should be?
Rather than NHS GPs making Instagram commercials for private, and expensive, postpartum recovery programs we should ALWAYS be pushing for FREE access for women.
The Americanisation of British healthcare is a real problem and, the truth is, we would not accept this if this was happening for anything other than postpartum recovery?
Imagine NHS GPs advertising for people to get cataract treatment private. Or saying that "loads of people come to me with a broken leg so I tell them to buy X-program"!
It is outrageous that an essential service is being outsourced and that many women are being priced out of access.
So that's what I spend the first 15 or so minutes talking about, then I move on to "pelvic floor or diastasis recti?".
One of my PT colleagues, who is also a client, asked why online recovery programs now seemed to focus much more on pelvic floor in their advertising than they do on diastasis recti? What is the reason behind this change? Have the programs changed??
As always; HPNB is, and always will be, FREE for 3 months.

On this week's episode I have the pleasure of talking to Dr. Gina Simmons Schneider.
Gina is the author of Frazzlebrain: Break Free from Anxiety, Anger, and Stress Using Advanced Discoveries in Neuropsychology (Central Recovery Press, March 2022).
She is a licensed psychotherapist, executive coach, and corporate trainer. She serves as codirector of Schneider Counseling and Corporate Solutions.
Dr. Schneider is a coping skills expert with more than 25 years of experience helping people regulate difficult emotions and conflicts. Dr. Schneider is certified in Neuroscience for Clinicians through PESI and Critical Incident Stress Debriefing through National Trauma Services.
In short, she is a remarkably qualified person when it comes to dealing with stressful situations and emotions.
We have a tremendous conversation about how we can all deal with stressful situations better and more productively, making sure we don't stay in that stressed state for too long and realising that we might not control the situation but, with a bit of help, we can control our response and make our life easier for ourselves.
We are talking the power of the mind when it comes to stress but even when it comes to things like weightloss and athletic performance and post-partum recovery.
I would highly recommend reading Frazzlebrain, it's a great read, and Dr Gina has a gift for explaining these concepts in a clear and engaging way.

In this week's episode I waffle, and I DO mean waffle (so apologies for that), about protein intake postpartum.
Does the popular guideline of "1gram of protein per lb of body weight"go for postpartum women as well?
In fact, does it actually go for anyone??
I, as you listen to me go through some numbers that I pulled out of thin air, hope that this will give you an idea as to;
How much more you should be eating if your breastfeeding/expressing, what the right macro split really is and how the protein focus ties in with that.
I also briefly talk about backpain after pushing a pram for too long and why your hand position could actually be the cause, AND THE SOLUTION, to that particular problem.

I was going to do another Q&A this week but time ran away from me so I have the pleasure of bringing you the conversation I did with Rebecca Washuta.
Rebecca is a Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist and Health Coach specializing in weight loss and habit formation. She has been featured in a tonne of magazines and news segments and is a great person to talk to about how to take practical steps towards a healthier diet.
We discuss many, many things including;
What the Big 3 formula for creating healthy meals and snacks is.
How if you are hungry within 2-3 hours after eating a meal that means your meal isn't put together properly.
The importance of chosing good quality protein over shitty "extra protein" snacks (such as Pepperamis).
The importance of fibre.
Why meal plans suck.
How almost all pre-packaged foods are horrifically low on fibre and therefor low on satiety.
How to change eating habits successfully.
My dislike of setting the wrong goals, and SMART goals.
And much, much more.
You can find Rebecca in all the places the cool people hang out.

Have you ever wondered if you should try "Intuitive Eating"?
IE pops up on my social media feeds every now and again and, although I'm hugely in favour of people using their intuition when they do anything, I can't help but think some people are not really being honest with you about how tricky it can be and how to start.
I talk about the issues many people face when changing their diet to a more intuitive one; From old habits, to a massive food industry that's trying to get you to ignore your intuition.
I also touch on the hotly debated topic of fluoride exposure in drinking water and its potential impact on children's intelligence.
You might have seen the scary headlines "FLUORIDE IN DRINKING WATER MAKES KIDS DUMB!" or, even worse, "Fluoride is a neurotoxin and will kill you"
Drawing from a comprehensive 300-page report by the US Department of Health and Human Services, I explore the moderate association found between high fluoride levels and lower IQ scores in children, especially in parts of the world with higher fluoride exposure than the US.
I try to give you the full picture, summarise the findings and reassure you about the current safety standards for fluoride levels in the US and UK.

In this week's episode I have the pleasure of talking with Miguel Bautista from CFSrecovery.com about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
We discuss why CFS, also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), is often referred to as the "invisible illness," and talk about the daily challenges faced by those living with this misunderstood. and often ignored, condition.
Miguel provides a compassionate perspective on the importance of addressing CFS with empathy, alongside practical management strategies that highlight the parallels between CFS and long COVID.
We discuss the relationship between our modern, stress-filled lives and chronic illnesses such as CFS, fibromyalgia, and even long COVID.
We dissect how constant stimulation from technology and societal pressures can lead our brains to misinterpret everyday stressors as life-threatening situations, exacerbating anxiety and contributing to chronic health issues.
Miguel will help you find balance and reclaim your health with actionable lifestyle changes aimed at managing stress and achieving sustainable well-being.

Should postpartum recovery be sport-specific?
I had a wonderful email from someone who said the following;
Hi Pete,
Long time no see, I hope you’re well.
As you probably know I gave birth again a few months ago and am working with a team on my recovery.
We’ve only really just started so I’m very early on. My physio is (name removed) ,obviously I’ve known him for years, but my women’s health physio is someone Iv’e never dealt with before (and neither has anyone else I know in (name of sport removed)) and she said something that stuck with me and made me think…ermm…I’ll ask Pete about that.
She said that my post-partum recovery program should be specific to (sport removed). And yes going back to playing is absolutely key but, how is the program sport specific? when I asked her to clarify she said that another sport’s program is completely different postpartum than ours is and she was a bit short after that so I left it.
Any thoughts?
So that is what I'm discussing today.
I go through my reasoning and explain the way I work, with both athletes and non-athletes.
Is it different if you're a tennis or football player? What about for judokas and shotputters?
BTW this episode is not just for professional athletes, it VERY much also goes for "normal" people who just want to go back to doing what they love to do.
