It use to be that the only way a stylist could make money was to be "physically" doing someones hair or teaching a class. Which meant we could only make money during our working hours.

But did you know that times have changed and now there are a number of stylists and salon owners (me and Nicole being 2 of them) making money while we sleep!

I have 2 examples of additional streams of revenue that you can easily tap into, that will DRAMATICALLY improve your income without working MORE hours behind the chair. In fact you can wake-up to more money in your account every morning!

There's 2 ways we can go about opening our own salon, we can start from scratch and convert a space into a salon or we can buy an existing salon that someone is selling (or has failed) and build from there.

Both have pro's and con's. If the existing salon has a bad reputation it may be difficult and costly to educate a community that it's not the same salon.

If it's a new space then it may not be the right location for a salon for a number of different reasons; parking, passing trade, competition, etc...

Should I pay commission to my team or is it better to just rent a chair? This is a BIG question in the hair world .

I had a chance to chat with the founder and CEO of Phorest Salon Software, Ronan Perceval. But instead of just talking about the incredible things Phorest are doing for hairdressing, we chatted about the different business models that are springing up.

How Nicole and I decided to move across the country to a tiny town in Northern California, scrape together enough money to open a 4 chair salon with a goal to build a million dollar business with multiple stylists earning over $100,000.

It certainly wasn't easy and it didn't happen overnight, but with the right systems in place and with daily focus and determination, you too can build the salon of your dreams.

This is a slightly longer episode because we begin by exploring the "external" options before realising the big opportunity right in front of us.

We all know that lots of things have change over the last few years in hairdressing with the massive help of social media in our marketing and the constant evolution of salon software.

But one of the things, that kind of snook up on us, is the way in which we lead our teams.

All of these incredible advances in technology has led or stylists to a new level of independency. They no longer need to rely solely on "the boss" to fill their book with guests. They no longer have to wait until the end of the month to sit-down with their salon manager to figure out if they hit commission or have remained on target to smash a goal. They have the                    ability to build their brand and run their business right from                      their phone or tablet.

This means that as a leader, we need to alter our leadership style!

Times have dramatically changed over the last 10 years and if we are still trying to "Rule the Roost" using archaic methods, we will loose team members and struggle to attract new ones.
