The Pastrami Boys are so back and here for part II of the land management discussion. This episode is a continuation of EP 281 where we are talking about food plots, soil testing, and long term land management goals. 

Too many hunters plant seeds based on the looks - this is not the right thing to do. To have a successful food plot you need to take soil samples, work with biologists, and buy the right seed that will not only thrive in your environment, but food that your deer will eat. Find a local feed store that you can work with and talk to the folks who have been hunting that area for some time. 

Test different seed companies - See what works for your land, environment, and location. Different seeds thrive in different areas and pick your seeds based on what your goal is for that particular food plot.

There are two types of people in the way they prepare for their upcoming seasons: Those who shoot by the hip and those who plan everything out + layout all their gear for inspection. Which one are you? 

Both Luke and Keiffer talk about their methodologies and approaches to new season based on what and where they are hunting. Naturally this is normal based on what species of animal you are hunting, where you are hunting, length of the hunt, and what does base camp look like for you. Each person and their hunt is unique and we alter our approach based on what it is we are doing.

This week we have Josh Reed and Avery Whitehead on the podcast talking about Elk - Specifically Elk in Kentucky which conservationist have been working towards for many decades since the decimation of the species from over hunting. Since Carter is such a history nerd, of course the boys talk about the history of Elk. When we think of Elk we typically think of hunting Elk in Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, etcetera but all Western states. Elk are just as much as an East coast animal as it is a West Coast animal. 

Josh Reed has been successful in his Elk hunts in Kentucky and is dedicated in being just as good a hunter as Daniel Boone. Avery Whitehead recently drew a Kentucky Elk is looking to fill that tag here shortly in the latter part of 2026.
