  • Leadership Summit 2023: highlights, optimism and leadership qualities

IAB UK's annual Leadership Summit returned to Sopwell House last week, bringing together leaders from across digital advertising to debate key challenges, share ideas to move our industry forward and hear from a raft of inspiring speakers. From the shape of the political landscape to building a happier, more productive workforce, sessions focused on the most important subjects of the day with speakers including Dr Julie Smith, Kay Cossington, Lewis Goodall and many more. Away from the main stage, we ran smaller, more conversational townhalls on effectiveness, sustainability, workplace culture and transparency & the use of personal data.

While we were there, we took the opportunity to speak to a handful of the 150 delegates for the IAB podcast. In this special episode, speakers, media leaders and industry legends talk about what they most enjoyed at the summit, what their biggest priorities are, what gives them optimism, and what they believe to be the most important quality for a leader.

  • International Women’s Day 2023 with Visible Start & GroupM

Four years ago, Jacquie Duckworth co-founded Uninvisibility - a company with a singular mission to get midlife women back into work after extended career breaks. She joins James to explain how the company’s eight-week training course, Visible Start, is empowering women aged 45 and over to build a new narrative when it comes to their careers. The course, which was set up in partnership with Brixton Finishing School and sponsored by WPP, has so far been taken by 100 women with 18 going on to land jobs at WPP media agencies - including Fiona Cameron, who joins the conversation to share how the experience led to her becoming Senior Learning and Development Business Partner at GroupM. • The science of sound, with Spotify's Marion Boeri

In 2022, Spotify Advertising published the first volume of 'Sonic Science' to demonstrate the power of audio by developing a deeper understanding of how audio content connects emotionally and physically with listeners. Last year’s research, which many listeners will have seen presented at IAB Engage 2022, explored how sound impacts the brain by measuring neural activity in real-time.

In this episode of The IAB UK Podcast, James speaks to Spotify's Global Thought Leadership Lead, Marion Boeri, to share an early look at the second volume of the research released this week. For part two, the focus has switched to tracking how audio makes us feel based on where we’re listening, how we’re feeling and what we’re doing at the time. From physiological data to electrodermal activity, this fascinating chat digs deep into the science behind why sound really is so powerful.
