  • The Updated Golden Rule - Adam Larkin - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode # 034

Human analytics is an incredible way to inform every aspect of your business. Adam Larkin is an Executive Advisor at Culture Index and the Owner of Premier Consulting Services. Adam shares how to communicate and lead your employees effectively, why you shouldn’t always promote your top performers into management, and what your employees complaining actually means.

    Takeaways:

    • A major misconception in leadership is that leaders think, “I am never the problem for my employees’ lack of performance.” Around 67% of workers in the US are disengaged and only show up to work for the paycheck.
  • An engaged employee has an ownership mentality and believes not only in the company, but in its mission and vision. They apply themselves to fulfilling that vision and in doing so, have fun at work.
  • There are 20 different personality types which all prefer to communicate and interact in certain ways. As a leader, you need to treat people how they want to be treated. You can find out how they want to be treated by using human analytics and talking to them.
  • By knowing how your employees want to be treated, you can communicate with them more effectively, set them up to be more successful, and properly motivate them.
  • Just because an employee is a top performer in one role does not necessarily mean they should be promoted into a leadership position. People may excel at a task but that does not mean they are able to handle the responsibilities of managing others.
  • Find the reason why someone wants to move into management. The reason shouldn’t be that because they’re tenured, they’re supposed to get into management. The reason should be that they have a desire to lead others toward a common goal.
  • Instead of promoting top performers into management, consider building tiers into the organization. This way, they feel recognized and they can still do what they do best. For example, a progression from Junior Widget Maker to Senior Widget Maker.

  • The Dynamic Role of A Leader - Katherine Horrigan - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode # 033

As your company grows from day one on, your responsibilities as a leader will change and you need to be ready for it and be able to recognize. Katherine Horrigan is the Founder & CEO of The Dance Academy of Virginia. Katherine is also a former professional dancer, mom, professor, and entrepreneur. Katherine shares the changing role of a leader, understanding your team, and communicating your vision.

    Takeaways:

    • Your role as a leader and business owner will change over time. In the beginning, there is more of a focus on day-to-day tasks and managing the operations. Whereas as the company and team grow, the focus shifts to vision, long-term goals, and culture building.
  • It is your job to figure out where the company is going and why. Along with that, you must communicate your vision and your passion to your team and get them to buy in and see the bigger picture.
  • The approach to leadership for your team is the same, however, it is not the same for each person. As a leader, you need to target your message to each person. Each member of your team receives information differently and has unique needs.
  • When you take the time to listen, observe, and build awareness of each of the members of your team, you will understand them better as people and can therefore help them better to be the best they can be at their job.
  • Even if you hire someone with first-rate talent and expertise, if they don’t know and understand your vision, they won’t be able to maximize their impact on your business.
  • Listen carefully to the language that each member of your team uses and look for patterns in their communication and how they present. There’s nothing too small to not pay attention to because there is a lot of information in the details.
  • Although it can be difficult, try to slow down to give yourself time to learn and grow. Your self-development is an ongoing process, but you can make a real impact by regularly scheduling time to slow down, reflect, and learn.

  • Inspiring Yourself to Inspire Others - Michelle Coyle - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode #032

You can inspire people to take an action much more easily than you can make people take that action. Michelle Coyle is the President, Growth Strategist, Management Trainer, Entrepreneurship Coach, and Executive Coach at BGSD Strategies. Michelle shares how many credentials you actually need to be a leader, how to become a magnetic leader, and what it takes to find your purpose and your why.

    Takeaways:

    • You don’t need to collect mountains of credentials before you can become a leader and be taken seriously.
  • Leadership is not about getting other people to follow you, leadership is really about self examination and becoming aligned with your authentic self. When you do this, you become a magnetic leader that people want to follow and listen to.
  • Leadership and charisma are not things you need to be born with in order to have, they can be developed. Beyond simply charisma, being inspiring to other people starts with getting inspired yourself.
  • Part of the self examination process starts with figuring out what your mission and purpose is. You can use that passion to fuel your work and the work you need to do on yourself to overcome your weaknesses.
  • If you are trying to get other people to do something, you are probably fighting a losing battle. It’s much better for people to be inspired of their own volition to take an action, and that inspiration happens when you show up authentically.
  • What people are looking for from leaders is for someone to show them the right path, where the meaning in what they do is, and where the purpose is. All of this comes naturally from you when you let it shine through.
  • Your passion has to be genuine and you need to be steadfast in your conviction to make an impact. Not everyone will follow you and your vision, but those that do will be extremely inspired and follow your lead.

  • Elevating Your Team - Sami Benchekroun - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode # 031

There are so many misconceptions around leadership and today’s guest has three he’d like to squash. Sami Benchekroun is the Co-Founder & CEO of Morressier and a founding member of the Edtech Founders Club. Sami shared who should be making decisions in your company, why you need to hold your team high, and how to recognize the strongest leaders in your business.

    Takeaways:

    • Every decision should not be made by the leader of an organization. The leader should set the guardrails and allow their team to make their own decisions.
  • Instead of building yourself up as a hero, alone atop a mountain, you should elevate your team and put them on top of the mountain.
  • The strongest leaders are not necessarily people who manage others rather they are usually the ones mastering their craft and showcasing their abilities every day.
  • While finding the exact moment to hand over ownership of a process is very difficult, a sign you’re getting close is when you start to see some repeatability in the process.
  • Hiring plays such a critical role in the success of a business, especially a new business. Entrepreneurial-minded people are able to wear many different hats and fill in whichever role you need them to.
  • The more time you spend in the recruiting process taking closer looks at applicants, the better off your business will be. The extra time you spend evaluating talent, the higher quality talent you will find and put in the right role.
  • As soon as you add a management layer and start managing people who are managing other people, you need to really think about who can drive initiatives within the company and put those people on the mountaintop with their superhero costumes.
  •

    • “Most of the time that one spends as the founder of the company, as the CEO of the company needs to be around the people” - Sami Benchekroun

  • Leading Others by Leading Yourself - Manny Cosme - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode # 030

For so many, leadership means standing on a pulpit and telling other people to do things, but that’s not what leadership is really about. Manny Cosme is an entrepreneur and the President & CEO of CFO Services Group. Manny shares how to start leading yourself, what to look for when hiring, and what it takes to motivate your team!

    Takeaways:

    • Leadership is not something that is done externally to people. Leadership is about being honest and open with yourself and letting that exude out into the world and allowing that to be what others are drawn to.
  • By motivating yourself to make a change and move forward you can inspire others to do the same. When you raise your energy level, others will catch on and it will increase their energy levels as well so that you can all move forwards as a team.
  • When hiring new team members, it’s more important to make sure that they are an energetic fit than it is to make sure they have the right skill set. The challenges facing your business are always changing and you need a team that can adapt.
  • In your interviews, look for self-aware people who can speak from the heart and not only know who they are and what they want but are also able to articulate it.
  • When you are working in an organization, you can shirk some responsibilities and the organization will survive but when you’re running your own company, if you don’t get things done then you’re not putting food on the table.
  • Just because you hire someone to do a job does not mean that job is going to get done. You need to learn how to motivate and inspire people to do their best and move the ball forward for the business.
  • You can avoid one of the biggest mistakes so many businesses make by having good data and using it to create a financial forecast. Without that forecast as a map, you could be headed straight for a roadblock and not realize it until you hit it.

  • Transparent Leadership - Ashtan Moore - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode # 029

Today’s guest is an internationally renowned entrepreneur, investor, and advisor that loves building companies and helping others do the same. Ashtan Moore is a Co-Founder & Advisor at Ironclad Accounting & Finance and a Co-Founder & Partner of Model B. Ashtan shares how transparency helps make better business decisions, the importance of good financial management, and some guidelines on investing in marketing for your company.

    Takeaways:

    • Don’t get too caught up in the “fake it until you make it” mindset because you need to be truly authentic and share your struggles. Without recognizing the reality of your company, you can prioritize the wrong goals and lose traction.
  • Being as transparent as is reasonable in most scenarios will allow you to make better decisions; decisions which are the difference between companies that grow every month and those that get stuck in the mud.
  • If you’re trying to sell fast enough to outrun your poor financial management you’re fighting a losing battle and as soon as a competitor who can sell as fast as you and has good financial management comes along your company is finished.
  • If you don’t manage your financials well, you’ll never be able to invest in your growth. By managing your company’s financials, you’ll be able to forecast your growth for the next 3 to 5 years.
  • The SBA shared that mid-market companies are investing an average of 12% of their gross revenue into marketing and advertising, however, many companies are either far above or below this average.
  • You need to test different marketing activities for your company even though they all won’t necessarily drive ROI. Doing this allows you to see which activities do drive ROI and lets you forecast your growth based on how much you are going to invest.
  • A shortcut around some of the marketing trial and error is to just contact people in your network that are running companies similar to yours and ask them what they are doing.
  •

  • Expanding Your Inner Circle - Jeff Berkowitz - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode # 028

You don’t know everything and that’s ok, but it’s important that you know where your expertise ends and the opportunity to learn begins. Jeff Berkowitz is the Founder and CEO of Delve. Jeff has been recognized by Politico and is one of the best-known policy researchers in Washington D.C. He has worked with The White House, The State Department, major presidential campaigns, and national political campaigns. You’ll hear about how to identify your two circles of competence, being aware of what you don’t know, and how to improve your company’s onboarding process and culture.

    Takeaways:

    • Many people work in the outer circle of competence of what they think they know, rather than working in the inner circle of what they actually know. This can lead to lots of disagreements and friction both inside an organization and outside.
  • Much of what people think they know is actually based on flawed assumptions and as a leader, you need to be willing to recognize what you really know and what you still need to learn. What you don’t know can hurt you.
  • As a leader, one of the most powerful things you can do is ask questions and really dive into finding the answers. You need to step back and ask yourself what do you actually know and what do you need to figure out.
  • It’s valuable during the onboarding process to learn how people approach work and how they can be successful. This helps avoid misunderstandings down the road.
  • You should always be expanding your circles of competence by learning new things and taking a humble assessment of your own knowledge.
  • There’s always more research that you can do when making a decision but you need to realize when you’ve done enough to make a decision and that’s not always clear.
  • Think about if the decision is reversible or not and see where you are in terms of how much research you have done. You can never really get to 100% done, but if you are at 70-80%, you probably have enough information to make an educated decision.
  • The more you can identify the purpose of the information and the decision you are trying to make, the more you can figure out what information you actually need.

  • Getting out of the Muck - Jack Daly - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode # 027

So many leaders get mired in the everyday muck of their own businesses and are unable to identify and capitalize on new opportunities to grow. Thankfully, Jack Daly knows all about getting yourself unstuck so you can grow your business Jack Daly is a world-renowned CEO coach, speaker, and author of Hyper Sales Growth and Jack Daly’s Life By Design. Jack served as a Captain in the U.S. Army and has worked as CEO for many large companies where he’s drawn from over 30 years of experience in sales. You’ll hear all about how to get yourself out of the weeds, what the leader of a company is supposed to do, and powerful ways to recognize your team.

    Takeaways:

    • Many Entrepreneurs and business owners are too involved in the day-to-day and because of that, they have a harder time identifying where there the opportunities to scale their business are.
  • Model the masters means that you should find people who are already doing something very well and mirror them. Business giants don’t spend their time getting stuck in the weeds.
  • There are two ways to recognize that you are in the weeds. The first route is to look at all of the things you’re doing and identify everything you should get rid of. The second way is to look at what you should be doing with your time at a higher level.
  • There are three things that the leader of a company is supposed to do which are setting and communicating the vision for the company, making sure you have key people in key spots, and building a winning culture.
  • What percentage of your time are you spending on your company’s culture? Most leaders recognize culture’s importance while allocating it very little of their time because they are too involved in the day-to-day.
  • What are your systems and processes to regularly ongoing recognize your team? Recognition doesn’t mean spending tons of money. One of the most powerful ways to recognize someone is a handwritten note from yourself.
  • In order to keep up the pace of business today, you need to empower your team to make decisions as if they are the owner so that they can move quickly on opportunities.

  • The Role of the Leader - Farooq Cheema - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode # 026

Before a leader can extract the best from their team, they need to understand themselves and how to get the best from themselves. Farooq Cheema is an active investor in small and medium-sized businesses with a portfolio of 15 companies. He holds five process-oriented patents and loves growing businesses. Farooq shares what the role of a leader really is, how to build a strong team, and how leadership impacts investments in a company.

    Takeaways:

    • Many leaders fall into the pitfalls of either bossing people around or not being able to make tough decisions because they are trying to please everyone.
  • Leaders need to stay clear of getting mired in avoidance when it comes to making tough decisions. If you are aware of a problem, you need to take care of it when it arises.
  • A leader’s job is to get the best out of those around them and if you are unable to get the best out of someone, don’t hold them back. You need to let them go to where they give their best and excel.
  • Leadership starts by leading yourself first. You need to start off by knowing yourself and how you handle hard times. This helps you relate to your team members when they are going through a similar situation.
  • When you recognize that you are deeply not happy with your work, you need to make that extremely tough decision to move on to where you can excel and feel happier.
  • As a leader, you need your mission to be successful and the only way for the mission to be successful is if your team members are successful.
  • If your team is just taking orders from you, they won’t feel connected. You will also face challenges when it comes to building a resilient organization because your team hasn’t been allowed to make mistakes, learn from them, and take ownership of their work.

    Quote of the Show:

    • “The role of a leader should be to extract the best out of somebody and sometimes the best out of somebody is not with you” - Farooq Cheema

  • Leading with a Common Dream - Victoria Lai - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode # 025

Today’s guest started making ice cream in her apartment kitchen in 2009 and continued making it while working as a presidential appointee to the Department of Homeland Security. Victoria Lai is a lawyer turned entrepreneur and the Founder & CEO of Ice Cream Jubilee. You’ll hear about connecting with the people you work with through common ground, how everyone can become a leader, and the way that real change happens.

    Takeaways:

    • As a leader, you need to find the common ground between yourself and the people you are working with to make sure that you have a common goal and a common dream that you’re working together to achieve.
  • You don’t have to have employees or a large public following to be a leader. Everyone can be a leader both to others and themselves.
  • Challenge yourself to meet people where they are and question your own way of thinking. Try reading opposing positions, learning about painful issues, and trying to understand the roots of these problems.
  • It’s important to talk with other people in a very understanding and open-minded way about these issues. You don’t need to solve everything right away, but the conversation itself is extremely important to have as a leader.
  • You will fail in some of your endeavors, so it’s really important that you are ready to get back up and try again. This is how you will improve who you are to become the best leader you can be.
  • The only way to truly move forward is to talk about hard things with others.
  • Your dreams are achievable but you have to do the work, become an expert, and continue improving yourself. You also need to tell everybody about your dream, saying it aloud will help you manifest it and build allies.
  •

    Quote of the Show:

    • “The better that you can communicate and empathize with other people, the better you can achieve that common vision” - Victoria Lai
