  • Moving In The Right Direction - Gaurav Arora - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode # 014

Finding your passion is not a straightforward process, but today’s guest is providing the keys to starting your journey of self-discovery. Gaurav Arora started xMonks in 2009 and has over sixteen years of rich experience as a facilitator, coach, and speaker. As an executive coach, he works to dismantle barriers that come up in the workplace for leaders and help them in fulfilling their intent. Get ready to learn about the meaning of leadership, co-creating a positive impact in the world, and setting yourself in the right direction for your passion to discover you.

    Takeaways:

    • Leadership is not just a set of actions that you take, it requires a shift in who you are as an individual. To call yourself a leader requires you to shift your mindset, belief systems, and values.
  • Leadership is a coordinated and co-created movement that creates an impact that is good for the world.
  • Being a leader cannot be a solo journey. If it were, the “leader” would be using people to build something that only has value to the “leader”. To be a leader, you need to be impacting others in a positive way.
  • We need to deeply know ourselves to both become a leader and discover what our passions truly are. When looking for your passion ask yourself what are the things you love doing and when do you find yourself fully engaged?
  • As part of knowing ourselves, we can identify our own fears and insecurities and work to move past them.
  • It’s ok if have not found your purpose yet, what you need to do is continue to move in the right direction. If you are moving in the right direction, your purpose will find you.
  • We need to listen to ourselves and through this, we will feel ourselves answer the question of whether or not we are moving in the right direction.

  • Leaders With A Limp - Melissa Simkins - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode # 013

Are you ready to begin pursuing your purpose, become a greater leader and accomplish your vision? Melissa Simkins is sharing the foundational parts of what true leadership is, where to look for poignant examples of great leadership, and what you need to do before others can see you as a leader. Learn how to find your purpose and what you are capable of when you align your passion and profession. This episode is so chock full of amazing insights, you’ll probably have to listen to it a few times.

    Takeaways:

    • Leadership is a state of being, not a state of doing. Leadership is not something someone can just turn on or off, it is a lifestyle and applies to all aspects of your life.
  • Never trust a leader who doesn’t walk with a limp. Leadership is extremely hard and great leaders will have the battle scars to prove what they’re capable of going through.
  • You need to see yourself as a leader before others can call you a leader. Be the lion who sees itself as a leader and has great vision.
  • When you find yourself in a situation where you are an outsider, embrace the fact that you are unique. Brands are valuable for their differences, not their similarities. The same principle applies to people, so seek out opportunities where you will stand out.
  • Pursuing your purpose will help you overcome loss and give you the courage you need to take the next step to accomplish your vision.
  • There is a multi-step approach to discovering your passion. First, step back and look at what’s working in your life. Next, find how you can align more of what brings you joy into what you do every day. Hold yourself accountable for doing that thing every day.
  • The profession most like a leader is a farmer, not a CEO or the president of the United States. The leader is constantly planting and watering seeds which makes an impact that is hidden from view until those plants burst forth to be harvested at the right time.
  •

  • Great Leaders and Great Vision - Oleg Konovalov - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode #012

Start putting your passion back into your business and use your great vision of the future to lead your team. Staring out at all of your problems is daunting but that just means you need a grander vision to solve them. Internationally renowned thought leader and visionary, Oleg Konovalov imparts the keys to boldly facing the changing world and engaging your team and customers with your vision. Open your mind to learn how to approach each new project, how leaders become great, and how to share ownership of your vision with others.

    Takeaways:

    • Don’t put too much stock in pleasing everyone. If you have a vision of where you would like to lead people, you need to stay strong and stick firmly to that vision.
  • When you are looking for consensus, you are thinking too much about the past and not enough about the future. Don’t try to copy and paste your previous experience into the future.
  • We accept that all great leaders are great learners. What we need to understand is that all great leaders are also great listeners. They listen to all of the pain points which alerts them to coming changes, allowing them to come up with solutions to problems earlier.
  • You need to face every new project or challenge you encounter with a new mindset. This is how you avoid repeatedly making the same mistakes throughout your journey. You need to unlearn so you can come in as a blank slate and learn the most up to date facts.
  • Be courageous in your thinking! The world is changing, so you cannot afford to be a hostage of your own fears and the fears that others give to you.
  • We are all surrounded by millions of problems but when we see our future as a great solution to these problems, it can seem scary and that is ok. With this comes the realization that you need to grow in order to execute this solution to reach your future.
  • When your vision aligns with your passion, your vision becomes something more than just a project. This makes your vision truly worth fighting for. Your vision now carries an emotional power and with that, you are able to share that passion with others.

  • Prospering From Your Passion - Anne McCabe - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode #011

Many people think that if they were the leader, everything would be so much easier for them and their workload would disappear. However, this is not the case, the responsibilities only escalate along the way up. But if you are passionate about what you do, those new challenges won’t be a problem for you as Anne McCabe has found throughout her successes as an entrepreneur. Anne shares what she’s learned along her journey such as accepting a 24/7 working mentality, evaluating risks based on the worst case scenario, and what it really means to sell your company.

    Takeaways:

    • When you become a leader, your responsibilities don’t get any easier and you have to accept the fact that even if you’re not ‘working’ you’ll never be able to turn that completely off.
  • When you are not working in the business and you are doing something unrelated to the business is when you can really come up with really creative ideas for your business. Exercise can be particularly helpful with generating these creative ideas.
  •  When thinking about a big risk, such as selling your business, consider what the worst case scenario could be and if you are comfortable with that. You need to be at peace with that worst case scenario in order to take that risk.
  • You can start your company on the side while still working at your current, secure job. You don’t have to approach it from an all or nothing standpoint.
  •  Selling your company is a very emotional process, but you need to ask yourself what your life’s purpose is and if keeping your company is still in line with that purpose.
  • Set aside time in your day to sit quietly and listen to what your body and your intuition is telling you. This could take the form of meditation or even just sitting without checking your phone.
  • For married couples, both spouses should attend at least one meeting every year with their financial planner, so that everyone has an up to date understanding of the opportunities and challenges of the couples’ situation.
  •

    • “If you wait until you have it all figured out, you'll never do it because you'll just never have everything figured out beforehand” - Anne McCabe

  • Strategies for Success - John Spence - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode #010

People are always asking about what they need to have to become a successful leader and this week’s guest, John Spence has that answer. Through this great discussion about what being a leader is about, continuing your learning, and the workplace of tomorrow, you’ll get some great advice and actionable tips that you can apply in your own life and business.Get ready to learn about the three quotients a leader needs, what the best employees are looking for from your company, and how to maintain a corporate culture while working virtually.

    Takeaways:

    • Leaders are made, not born. The traits that you need to become a leader are learned skills that leaders will pick up as their experience grows and must practice to keep sharp.
  • Future leaders need to have these three quotients, which are: 1) IQ - a dedication to lifelong learning; 2) EQ - a well-developed emotional intelligence; 3) AQ - your adaptability or agility.
  • It is just as important to be able to unlearn things as it is to learn new things. This is especially important when you are moving on from antiquated systems and processes so you aren’t bringing the same habits to the new systems and processes.
  • As part of your lifelong education, you should read 6-12 business books per year. A great way to get the most out of reading all of these books is to have a system that helps you keep track of your notes and what you found most valuable from them.
  • If you’re not sure what topic to start reading about, pick something you really want to learn more about and then take a deep dive into it by reading several books centered around that topic.
  • The younger generations that have entered the workforce over the past decade put a great deal of importance on the purpose of their work and making sure their work is meaningful. When companies focus on this they motivate their young employees better.
  • The best employees at top companies are looking for six things from their company: 1) Fair Pay; 2) Meaningful Work; 3) Cool Colleagues; 4) Great Culture; 5) Personal & Professional Development; 6) I work for a leader I trust, respect, and admire.

  • Designing Without The Day-To-Day - Amy Peltier - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode #009

Entrepreneurs need to get out of their own way and stop limiting their business’s growth, but it’s a struggle for so many to do that. That’s exactly where Amy Peltier found herself when she had to move across the country from her business. But Amy found amazing success despite being 3000 miles away and she’s letting you in on the keys to your own company’s growth. You’ll learn about the role processes play when you’re trying to get out of the business, what you should look for when you hire to expand the knowledge base, and how to establish a great culture.

    Takeaways:

    • As the visionary in charge of your company, you need to remove yourself from the day-to-day processes and tasks so you can focus on working on the company. If you don’t remove yourself, you can actually hinder your company’s growth.
  • In order to grow, you cannot be the center of all of the knowledge in your business. Work on coaching up and mentoring your employees so they are able to run the processes that you have laid out and also develop as leaders within the company.
  • It’s ok that you don’t know every little nuance of every aspect of your business, you wouldn’t have any time if you did. To make up for this, you need to hire people who do know the finer details of what they specialize in and can fill the knowledge gaps.
  • When removing yourself from your business, think at the end of the day of everything you did that day. Of that, what could you have assigned to someone else. Who would you assign it to? What do you need to teach them so they can succeed in doing it?
  • One of the keys to growing your business is to create processes that will allow the business to function, and even flourish, without constantly needing your direct involvement.
  • Develop your processes so they are established as what is expected from all of your employees. This will become part of your company’s culture and in turn will be front of mind for your employees.
  • When your employees show that they care and are really willing to go the extra mile for you and the company, you need to respond in kind and show that you also care about them and appreciate their efforts.
  •

    Quote of the Show:

    • “To actually lead a company, you need to remove yourself from it, because if you're doing everything, it's just you, you just have a business with you, but when you remove yourself from it and you are able to empower your employees to do their job, that's when you're leading your company” - Amy Peltier

  • Solving Big Issues in a Small World - Olivier Meganck - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode #008

While it may seem to many that the higher you go in a company, the easier the job gets, this could not be further from the truth. Olivier Meganck has seen both sides of this spectrum and he is passing along some amazing tips to help you manage the increasing responsibilities of your jobs. You’ll hear about finding your working-life balance if it’s even out there, making a career out of following your passions, and what to do when selling your company.

    Takeaways:

    • Don’t be misled by the facade of everything becoming easier as you climb up the corporate ladder. For example, with each promotion comes new challenges and more people are relying on you to make their living.
  • One of the largest challenges with running a business internationally is related to being in completely different time zones. Although it may be the dead of night where you are, if a client has a problem on the opposite side of the globe, you’ll be getting a call.
  • Try to find the business that also serves as your passion project and gives you an outlet for creativity and growth.
  • When you are truly earnest in pursuing your passion and you introduce it organically and without pretext to other people, they are more inclined to develop the same interest and become loyal customers.
  • Selling your company can be very emotional. Because of the emotional connection you have with it, you should probably have someone else break the news to your team as this is not news that should be delivered through a downpour of tears.
  • When transferring your business to a new owner, you need to make sure the clients needs are still met and that the transition does not get dragged out. You need a plan in place to allow a quick and seamless transition. Staff retention is also critical!
  • The key to successfully selling your business is to maintain client retention. If your clients all start looking elsewhere, the buyer may back out of the deal or you may lose out on the initial offer for your company because of the depreciation.
  •

  • The Great Responsibility of Leaders - Sonja Caison - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode #007

Your team needs to have standard procedures and expectations set so your business can succeed and scale. Sonja Caison has some amazing tips to help you develop your team, establish standards, and how to avoid responding emotionally based on first instincts. You’ll hear about some great resources for you and your team, how to start your own business, and how to lower your turnover.

    Takeaways:

    • When developing your team, you can give people on your team great opportunities, but they have to want to take those opportunities and excel in them. Be patient and allow them to see they can do actually do it and are ready to tackle that challenge.
  • Setting consistent expectations and having standard procedures in place are keys to keeping your turnover rates low.
  • As a business leader, you have a great responsibility to make the right decisions, not just for the business, but for all of the people who depend on your business such as your team and their families.
  • Business leaders need to know that when they handle a situation, their team is watching them and will point to how they previously dealt with it when a similar situation arises in the future. Because of this, leaders must have a consistent approach to handling issues.
  • When you handling a problem take the extra step of writing down how you’re doing it so you have that to refer back to if you face a similar situation. This becomes a resource to give your employees and everyone should use it frequently to maintain consistency.
  • As counter-intuitive as it may seem, one of the keys to growing your business is to lower your standard slightly. It’s better to focus on getting your team to do 90% than to obsess over the last 10% which can lead to alienating employees.
  • It’s imperative to know yourself and understand what triggers you. When something happens that could trigger you, take a moment so that you can respond from a state of calm rather than a state of fear, frustration, etc.
  •

    Quote of the Show:

    • “I really needed to show them that the opportunity is there, but then have the patience to wait for them to see that this is something they can do and then allow them for them to really come to me to say, yes, they're ready to move into that opportunity” - Sonja Caison

  • Becoming The Beginning Learner - Warren Rustand - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode #006

The world is ever-changing and business leaders need to learn how to cope with changes that have occurred and prepare for what’s next. Warren Rustand is just the person to help today’s business leaders adapt and educate the leaders of tomorrow. You will learn about becoming a beginning learner, how to set boundaries between work and home life while working from home, and the three great principles of leadership.

    Takeaways:

    • The business leaders of tomorrow will need to have more of a focus on external, macro issues that are transpiring around the world. They will need to be more aware of global trends, economic circumstances, & how to access more diverse markets.
  • CEOs must become the ‘beginning learner’ about the world and open their mind to learning. You may be an expert on your business, but you need to be a learner when it comes to learning about what’s really going on in your country and the world at large.
  • The Covid pandemic has caused major changes in society. One new trend is the shifting way people look at working in a corporate environment versus working at home. Up to 40% of people will never return to a corporate office.
  • With the rise of remote work, where you live no longer matters. There has already been a migration out of traditional urban centers into rural communities where people can save 50% on rent and still work at the same job.
  • Without having the commute home to decompress, you need to have boundaries in place to allow you to destress before you get involved with your family after work. You also need boundaries to prevent yourself from working every hour of the day.
  • There are 3 great principles of leadership: 1. Clarity of Vision (Where are you going & how do you get there?); 2. Certainty of Intent (Act on your vision intentionally, all the time); 3. Power of Values (How you live your life every day).
  • Your family and your business have similar lifecycles. When they become stagnant they can either head towards catastrophe or find ways to reinvent themselves and thereby revitalize themselves.
  •

    Quote of the Show:

    • “I think corporate leaders who have been largely focused on the internal part of their business, will now become much more externally focused” - Warren Rustand

  • Developing Happy Teams - Jim Gianiny - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode #005

Get ready to discover some great tips on leading your company to success! Jim Gianiny is a prolific and profound entrepreneur who has led multiple successful businesses throughout his career. You’ll learn about what role of a leader should be, how to deliver amazing client work, and how to develop more effective strategic level solutions. You’ll hear a lot of awesome advice on cultivating a culture among you team even while working remotely.

    Takeaways:

    • Leadership should be about creating an environment where your team can thrive in both their personal and professional lives. Leaders should make their team’s responsibilities as easy to do as possible by removing barriers and supporting their development.
  • Providing great client work is crucial to any business. The key to achieving that comes from hiring the right people and being focused on them, their needs, and their growth.
  • You need to give yourself time to be strategic. Allow yourself to step away from the work and go on a 15-minute walk for example. You’ll probably find many of your best ideas come during the times you give yourself space.
  • Don’t assume that your team sees the same things you do and is going in the same direction as you are. You need to be transparent with your vision and allow your team a voice in the process of making strategic decisions.
  • It’s obviously important to set annual goals and break them down into doable pieces, but you should also pick a timeframe, such as two weeks, and see what you can get done in that timespan to get closer to accomplishing those annual goals.
  • As a leader, try to be equally focused on the financial success of the business and what you are doing as a team and how you are crafting a culture.
  • Because everyone was forced to work from home, people were able to see the actual lives of their coworkers and the real, everyday struggles they all have which created a closer connection among them.
