  • Telling Your Story - Sarah Elkins - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode # 024

Storytelling is an impactful art and a powerful tool but so many leaders misunderstand how to use it optimally. Sarah Elkins masterfully crafts narratives and is a sought-after leader, coach, and professional speaker. Sarah is the Communication & Storytelling Coach at Elkins Consulting Inc. as well as the author of Your Stories Don't Define You. How You Tell Them Will. In addition, Sarah is also the host of a podcast called Your Stories Don’t Define You. Come along for an amazing conversation laden with tips on how to tell more meaningful and inspiring stories, how to lead a happier life, and what to avoid when telling your story.

    Takeaways:

    • Your stories don’t need to be epic in order to share them. The grandiose stories are not as relatable as the most meaningful, pivotal moments in your life.
  • In order to communicate what really matters to you with the others in your team, share personal stories. The best way to share your vision and values is to share something personal.
  • Stories do not have to show extreme vulnerability to be inspiring. Some degree of vulnerability is important, but not everyone needs to, or should, go way out of their comfort zones.
  • In the moment, you most likely won’t recognize the meaningful stories as they are happening. It takes being asked the right questions before the epiphany hits.
  • When sharing a meaningful story, paint a picture for the listener with very intentional details that they can relate to in some ways.
  • If you want to share a story about a win, don’t start with bragging. Start with setting the scene of the first obstacle and the supporting characters. The story can’t be all about you and your win. End with what the win felt like and what the ultimate impact was.
  • As you walk through your everyday life, you are collecting the stories that will be meaningful to you in the future. Think about those stories being in alignment with how you see yourself and how you want to be perceived.
  •

    Quote of the Show:

  • Better Than Being Right - Jim Arnold - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode # 023

There are so many popular misconceptions about leadership and this episode is all about smashing them. Jim Arnold is a dynamic, forward-thinking leader and is the Senior Partner at Deliver Strategies. Jim discusses 3 myths that leaders need to steer clear of, the importance of emotional intelligence in leadership, and why you should never assume!

    Takeaways:

    • A leader is not infallible! Avoid using a fingerpointing mentality when mistakes occur. Mistakes will happen and it’s important to learn whether they are from human error or a process problem that needs to be fixed.
  • Make sure to emphasize the importance of asking questions during your company’s onboarding process.
  • As a leader, when things go wrong, you need to look in the mirror. When things go right you need to look to your employees and give them the credit
  • Leaders need to acknowledge their emotions and the emotions of their employees. When there are issues, it’s best to address them head-on.
  • Don’t assume! It’s better to take the time and talk to an expert before launching into a process than to have to redo that process once you’ve found a mistake in the initial work.
  • For those just coming into the workforce, find out what your boss needs and do a good job of doing it.
  • Having a good deal in place that allows your company to endure is better than getting the most money possible and leaving your company to die in the arms of uncaring owners.
  •

    Quote of the Show:

    • “Empathy and treating people right is way more important than having the right answer” - Jim Arnold

  • Always Sharpening The Saw - Kris Kluver - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode # 022

You aren’t born as a leader, so to become a leader and grow as a leader, you need to reinvest in yourself! Kris Kluver is the Founder of Life On Your Terms and the author of The Aspiring Solopreneur and A Fable - Life On Your Terms. Kris is also the founder and principal of Entrepreneurial Advisors. Kris started his first of 14 companies at age 19 and his entrepreneurial has blossomed from there. You’ll learn about building confidence as a leader, protecting your time, and how to start leading a more balanced life.

    Takeaways:

    • As a leader, you don’t have to know everything! You need to have the confidence and vulnerability to say that you don’t know and work with your team to figure out a solution.
  • Leaders are not born. While some people may have different traits than others, those are not identifiers of leadership. Make sure you’re always sharpening your tools, reinvesting in yourself, and striving to get better.
  • Very successful business leaders aren’t forced to have a terrible home life. You don’t have to choose between them, you can have it all, if you are intentional in your approach, very self-aware, and proactive.
  • When the going gets tough, many leaders revert to their default which is to work harder. However, leaders need to transition from doers to thinkers by looking at the whole picture and facilitating input from others.
  • Much of protecting your time and leading a balanced life comes down to getting 7-8 hours of good sleep every night. This can be your biggest competitive advantage. Keeping electronics out of your bedroom is tremendously helpful in getting better sleep.
  • The greatest gift you can give yourself and others is being 100% present in whatever you are doing. When you’re talking with other people, try to really listen and engage with them in a real spirit of curiosity.
  • The Balance Wheel approach to measuring success through non-traditional metrics consists of four quadrants, which are Relationships, Professional, Health, and Resources.
  •

  • Giving Yourself Permission to Dream - Jen Mazer - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode # 021

The universe is pretty big and your next steps in life through the cosmos can be hard to identify, let alone take. Thankfully Jen Mazer is here to offer some guidance. Jen is the Founder & CEO of Queen of Manifestation LLC, CoFounder of Sparked, and Author of Manifesting Made Easy. Jen is also a highly sought-after transformational speaker and coach. Get ready to learn how the way you show up impacts others, what to do with your next crazy idea, and who to surround yourself with in order to grow and learn.

    Takeaways:

    • We are all leaders, whether we realize it or not! We have agency and in every moment, we can impact the outcome of our lives and our situations.
  • The way that you show up and present yourself at any given time will have an impact on those around you, so you need to be cognizant of how you show up as a leader.
  • Here’s a great exercise. Make a list of what makes you mad in the world. Then write out what the opposite of that would look like. Next, write out your talents and traits. Finally, see how your skills can create change to help you reach that perfect place.
  • When contemplating what kind of leader you want to be, consider these 3 questions. What do I want? How will I feel when I exist in that world? How can I feel that way now?
  • Surround yourself with other high-vibe, goal-oriented people. This will help inspire both you and them and cause everyone to rise together.
  • You need to expect that your crazy idea will happen! If you trust that the idea will come to fruition, you are more likely to take action, you will be less worried about rejection, and you will be less attached because you believe it will all work out.
  • Never be afraid of asking someone for help. When you ask for something, you are giving that person an opportunity to feel good by helping you. Because of this, you should also be the person to help others.
  •

    • “You wouldn't have this idea if you couldn't actually live it out” - Jen Mazer

  • Leading with Passion - LaShondra Mercurius - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode # 020

Entrepreneurs need to realize that expressing and understanding emotions are important for leading their business successfully. LaShondra Mercurius worked in the corporate staffing world for over 18 before founding JLM Strategic Talent Partners. Now, her company is included in the Inc. 5000, and LaShondra has become an outspoken thought leader in the industry and at large. In this episode, LaShondra details how leadership and emotions and deeply intertwined, why you need to set the right example for your team, and how to grow your company through specializing.

    Takeaways:

    • If you eliminate emotion from business, you miss out on the opportunity to really feel into where it is that you want to go as a leader and how you want to guide those that are following you. You need to be able to express and understand your emotions.
  • When your team can see that you feel passionate about achieving a goal, they will step up and help you realize that goal. But to do this, they need to feel your emotion.
  • Leadership is not about getting others to do what you want them to do! Leadership is really about instilling discipline and accountability for yourself and when you do that, you set the right example for people to follow.
  • When you are in a leadership position, everyone is watching you and looking to you for what to do next. Because of this, it is imperative that you set the right example.
  • In business, as in life, the relationship between you and your partners will evolve over time as everyone involved grows and changes. You need to be aware of the shifting dynamics and be responsive to them.
  • Even if yoga or meditation aren’t right for you, it’s still important to practice some form of self-care. You need to make time so that you can enjoy life away from the business.
  • While your business may start out serving very a broad client base, for long-term growth and success, it’s important to parse out the niche that you can specialize in and dominate.

  • Improving Your Emotional Intelligence - Sandee Sgarlata - Impactful Leadership Show - Episode # 019

Happiness and a well-rounded life are not destinations but journeys you travel along during your life. This week’s guest, Sandee Sgarlata is known as America’s Happiness Coach and the author of Happiness Solved: Climbing One Hundred Steps, and the host of the Happiness Solved Podcast. Sandee delves into the role that emotional intelligence plays in leadership, what you can do to develop your emotional intelligence, and what goes into living a well-rounded, happy life.

    Takeaways:

    • When people are promoted to a leadership position, the organization needs to provide them with some kind of leadership training because not everyone is a natural leader. However, with the right training, they can become great leaders.
  • Leadership is a skill that you can learn through practice as you would any other skill.
  • Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize and understand the emotions in yourself and in others. And then the ability to use this awareness to manage your behavior and your relationships.
  • As humans, our first reaction to a situation will be emotional. As your emotional intelligence develops, you will be able to better control your thoughts following your immediate reaction to a trigger. You will need to practice productive ways of responding.
  • When situations trigger strong emotional responses come up, there are 3 steps to how you respond: 1. The situation; 2. The thoughts around it; 3. How we react. You need to work on that reaction in order to produce more successful results.
  • Enhancing and improving your emotional intelligence comes down to two main factors self-management and self-control. It’s really about being well-rounded which includes everything from your mindset to your physical health.
  • The easiest way to improve your emotional intelligence is by paying attention to your thoughts. How often do negative thoughts pop up in your mind? You need to push yourself to become comfortable being uncomfortable so you can grow.
  •

    Quote of the Show:

    • “In order to grow, you have to be comfortable being uncomfortable. We only grow in every way by pushing ourselves into being uncomfortable” - Sandee Sgarlata

  • Restructuring the Entrepreneur Experiment - Neil Shah - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode #018

Your company needs a process for testing out new ideas and solutions. Neil Shah knows all about designing experiments and is involved in venture capital investing while also serving as the CEO of ThinkNimble. Neil shares insights on the nature of leadership, how entrepreneurs need to think about experiments in their companies, and how to set your company apart when raising capital.

    Takeaways:

    • Leadership is not an exact science. Leadership is a series of one-on-one connections between individuals that scale. It is more nuanced and interpersonal than simply defining processes and building structures.
  • When comparing a product-based business with a technology or service-based business, 90% of what makes the business work is the same between them, it’s the 10% that makes them distinct.
  • Fundamentally, the business process is just a series of experiments to test hypotheses using specific variables. To become more effective in the business world, you need to gain experience from running disciplined codified experiments.
  • Many entrepreneurs “experiment” using erratic behavior, however, you will produce more effective results by learning how to be a scientist and using a structured approach to how you think and experiment.
  • Companies looking to raise capital need to go beyond the boilerplate 10-page slide deck. Instead, consider presenting the 10 things that need to be true for your business to be successful and what experiments you are running to prove those 10 things to be true.
  • When pitching your very unique and novel company, don’t do it in the same way that every other company is being presented. Think about what format and messaging would represent your company’s originality better and make it stick out.
  • In order to properly develop a successful software application that can fulfill a human process, you first need to have a great understanding of that human process.
  •

  • Becoming a Mid 21st Century Leader - Towanna Burrous - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode # 017

Start increasing your team’s effectiveness by understanding the challenges of your employees better and looking after yourself. Dr. Towanna Burrous is a bestselling author, ICF Professional Certified Coach, and Founder and President of CoachDiversity Institute. You’ll hear about setting restrictions for your work, using your strategic plan to create better predictions for your company, and why leaders need to express greater empathy to their team.

    Takeaways:

    • Leaders are not inanimate objects. They think and feel just like every other employee and require the same amount of support and care as everyone else.
  • For new leaders, consider what skills you are missing. Create a list of what areas you need to skill up in and begin to learn about those areas. You don’t need to become a master in the field, but you should start developing your baseline understanding.
  • New leaders need to increase their empathy and be able to support the people they lead differently than they have in the past by working with them to fulfill their unmet needs.
  • If you don’t look after yourself, you won’t be able to step in at the right times and be as effective as you could be. What do retreat and professional development look like to you? Where do you add value to your ultimate goal?
  • Set restrictions on when you are available for work and stick to them, this will go a long way to improving your self-care. If your employees embrace these restrictions as well, they will also reap the benefits and the results will show in your company.
  • By limiting the time you commit to working in your business, you give yourself the time you need to continue reading and learning.
  • Use your strategic plan as a living document that you can add to every year while keeping the previous years’ plans intact. This gives you historical, current, and future views of your company which aid your predictions of what’s coming next.

    • When thinking about leadership, you need to think about what kind of ship you want to lead. Is it a galley with many people working diligently or perhaps a cruise ship where everyone is happy to be there? Which ship do your customers and employees prefer?
  • As a leader, the way you frame a task and the words you choose to communicate with are very important and play a large role in how you are perceived by your followers.
  • A good leader is kind. It does not envy. It does not boast, is not proud. It does not dishonor others. It is not self-seeking. It is not easily angered. It keeps no record of wrongdoings.
  • Good leaders will recognize that in order to make their ship go forward or their company grow, they need to invest time and resources into helping their team grow and develop as people.
  • Leadership does not come from a place of authority, it comes from a place of love. For entrepreneurs, this is both the love of their company and the love of their employees.
  • Find the passions of your employees by listening to them. When listening to them, you will likely discover some of their fears as well, so try to help them through those fears and remember to keep listening.
  • Consider asking your employees, “What do you do outside of work?” This question can help you find the passions of your employees while listening to them.

  • Behaving as a Servant Leader - Andrea Vieira - The Impactful Leadership Show - Episode # 015

Start using the best practices of great leaders to actually behave like a servant leader! Who better to learn from than Andrea Vieira, the co-founder of NailSaloon, with a unique entrepreneurial journey that started out for 20 years thriving in the media industry. You’ll hear Andrea’s unique insights on developing your team, engaging with both satisfied and unsatisfied customers, and establishing and nurturing a culture in your company.

    Takeaways:

    • Lot’s of people think that the person at the top of an organization does not have a boss, when in fact they have many, many bosses. These “bosses” include that person’s team, clients and community. The leader has to stay accountable to all of these bosses.
  • Because of the “do or die” mentality required for entrepreneurship by the entrepreneur committing themself financially to the business, they are not in control of the business, they are in service of it.
  • The best leaders learn that they cannot achieve their visions alone and in doing so accept that it’s much bigger than themselves. Once they accept that, they can focus on enabling their teams to succeed in whatever way they can.
  • It’s important to set boundaries for your work in order to create a better balance in your life. Consider not checking emails after 5pm and stick to it.
  • Make sure to respond to bad reviews when you are in the right state of mind. Before replying, take some time to try and think about the issue from their point of view.
  • The purpose of your response to a bad review of your business should be to engage the reviewer in conversation and find what the problem was so that you can find the cause and fix it.
  • When praising or rewarding your team, it’s important to have specific reasons for why an individual or team is receiving the praise. The recipient will appreciate the personalized positive feedback more and it will reinforce the specific behaviors that led to the reward.
