The Treasury Career Corner

The Importance of Learning and Being Adaptable in Treasury with Mark Hirst

Listen Later

If there’s one thing that applies across the board in treasury, it’s that you need to be adaptable.

Treasury is changing all the time. Treasury management systems are becoming more sophisticated, roles are evolving, and automation and remote working are here to stay.

In this episode of The Treasury Career Corner podcast, we welcome Mark Hirst, the Group Treasurer at Dr. Martens PLC, a brand known in the UK for its “rebellious self-expression.”

Mark’s past experience has seen him take roles at big names such as William Hill as Group Treasurer, Thomas Cook as UK&I Treasurer, and Tesco PLC as Head of Cash, Banking, and Payments. Mark’s old Thomas Cook colleague, Christopher Corner, joined The Treasury Career Corner in a previous episode.

His educational background was originally in languages which saw him study in both Germany and Russia, before moving into finance and treasury.

Dr. Martens is an iconic British brand founded in 1960 in Northamptonshire. Originally produced for workers looking for tough, durable boots, the brand was quickly adopted by diverse youth subcultures and associated musical movements.

Dr. Martens has since transcended their working-class roots while still celebrating their proud heritage, and, six decades later, "Docs" or "DMs" are worn by people around the world who use them as a symbol of empowerment and their own individual attitude.

The Company successfully listed on the main market of the London Stock Exchange on 29 January 2021 (DOCS.L) and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 index.

On the podcast, we discussed…

  • How Mark transitioned to a career in treasury
  • Why working in different sectors teaches you so much
  • The biggest challenges in treasury today
  • Why diversity in recruitment is so important
  • Mark’s advice for others starting their treasury career.

You can connect with Mark on LinkedIn.
