  • 027 Jay Crowell - How to Lead With Consistency and Gratitude

With a career spanning more than 17 years, Jay Crowell has experienced firsthand the many challenges and changes of the mortgage industry. Throughout it all, he has stayed true to his core convictions of faith, integrity, collaboration, and selfless service. Jay is currently the Pacific Northwest Regional Production Manager for Cornerstone Home Lending.

While Jay and his team have been widely recognized for their volume, Jay believes that the real value of what he does is based on much more than numbers and accolades. “My team and I share a passion to serve our clients and our community,” Jay says. “Home lending is our platform to positively transform lives and fulfill long-term goals through responsible, sustainable homeownership.”

In this episode Steve and Jay discuss:

    • Staying top of mind with your customers, however you can do that.
    • Leading off meetings with gratitude from everyone, always working the “gratitude muscle.”
    • Keeping your work/life balance manageable, and helping your team do the same.
    • Changing expectations to operate with more joy.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Come up with a plan and be consistent, don’t focus on being perfect.
    • Make sure you have new, meaningful content in regularly scheduled meetings.
    • Surround yourself with people who will make you better.
    • Comparing yourself to someone else is unproductive. You are comparing your journey today with theirs yesterday which is not a fair comparison.

“A wise man learns from other people's mistakes, they don't need to make the same mistake themselves. I really want to practice that, and we have people that want to learn from those situations, they don't have to make that same mistake.”  - Jay Crowell

  • 025 Jack Bevilacqua - The Power in Seeking to Understand

As a devoted student and practitioner of the arts of listening, awareness, and stillness, Jack would say those are hard-learned and hard-earned skills. He was a butcher for thirty years, but his real vocation during that time was being present with his customers and serving them through listening. After retiring, he began working for various nonprofits and has been a speaker and trainer for leadership teams and individuals. He now serves as a professional mediator where he helps to resolve conflict through the active practice of listening and helping the parties involved to feel heard.

A skillful musician, Jack plays multiple stringed instruments and has a deep and abiding passion for the music of Bob Dylan, and the invitation to meaning presented through his lyrics.

In this episode Steve and Jack discuss:

    • Waitressing: listening, checking in, and reviewing.
    • Keys to becoming a better, leader, spouse, parent, and person.
    • Asking how or what questions to learn more about the story.
    • Knowing what you are practicing, and that you need to be practicing continually.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Listening starts with silence. Still yourself, have a desire to listen, attempting to understand what the other person is thinking, has felt, and has experienced.
    • Having a willingness to come together and to understand with others. You don’t need to agree or disagree, just understand.
    • You don’t resolve the conflict. You manage it.
