Welcome to the first of our two-part spooky season episodes! This time of year is rich with the magic and mystery, and as is commonly mentioned, the "veil" thins. We discuss what the veil is, what it means for it to thin (including wondering if if ever thickens), and how to approach this season with grounded curiosity and a sense of potential and creativity.

At the heart of therapy and personal growth resides our belief systems. Formed when we're young and vulnerable, it is common for many of us not to question these until we're offered a call back to "reality," while others of us are routinely on the lookout for new information. In this listener-suggested topic, we explore how our beliefs shape our lives.

Where do you find your motivation to try something new, to change, or to simply keep progressing? With the New England autumn upon us, we have found many of our clients preparing for a long, dark, dragging winter that is leaving them feeling unmotivated. In order to find what motivates you - and keeps you motivated - Liz proposes it's important to find your "why." With a little psychology and a brush up on the Stages of Change, we explore the concept of ambivalence and how it often is a sneaky factor in why we do not stay motivated in our efforts to change.

As a follow-up to our conversation on Love Languages, we discuss what it means to receive good things. We have both worked with clients who have had difficulty accepting in new things for a few reasons. We explore a few of those, and discuss that to welcome in some things, we have to be willing to let other things go.

It's nice to listen to a podcast where someone else has picked the topic - no additional "mental load" required. Continuing in the flow of episodes with a focus on relationships, we explore the relational aspects of who takes on the burden of planning, organizing, and leading. From group projects in school to picking movies for a night with friends to family relationships, let us take the lead in this conversation on what helps partnerships truly thrive.

While the Five Love Languages has been part of our cultural understanding for over 30 years, what does it mean to give and receive love in various ways? We explore the depth of communication versus more surface-level platitudes, as Liz shares what makes her inner alert siren go off, and Dave has an aha moment. We think you will LOVE this episode, as well as the new project Liz teases...

As Liz so clearly put in last week's chat that we all have a need to be witnessed for who we are, and the only way to really do that is to open ourselves up to being vulnerable. There can be such intense fear around opening ourselves up to being hurt, as the dictionary puts it, so how do we face this and overcome it? What's on the other side of being exposed? Dave offers himself up as an embodiment of vulnerability in this episode, and Liz shares about doing therapy as a teenager at Taco Bell and guides us to find humor in ourselves.

Did you feel satisfied with our conversation last week? Did we leave you wanting more? We felt there was much more to explore, so we both wanted AND needed to continue it. This time around, we explore applying wants and needs within relationships. Who in your life leaves you wanting more? Who can you be just fine without? We explore these questions and much more in Part 2.

You may need to listen to this episode (or maybe you just want to) to help you determine what your wants and needs are!
Depending on how you were raised and during which generation, you may not fully be in touch with your needs beyond those for basic survival - food, shelter, water, clothing. In this episode, we work through Maslow's hierarchy of needs to start to go to the "next level" of wants and needs.
If you are not fighting for your survival, then you are afforded the right to think about what you want to build in your life. In order to build what you want, you will need to assess what you need to get there.
The only true determination we came to after-recording was that we needed a follow-up episode to keep discussing... so hang out for more development of our wants and needs next week!

Do you live from your head - or do you live from your heart? Finding a balance between these two energy centers can be a challenge - especially when your brain thinks it always knows best and your heart wants to be protected from hurt! Might we suggest bringing in a third energy to help you out? Give a listen to see “who” we think can help out with the head and heart conundrum.
