The Ruddock Inquiry has opened up a Pandora’s box of religious privilege.

The debate about expelling gay students has now widened to include criticism of teaching anti-gay religious doctrine.

  • Episode 176 – A parasite is feeding on the Liberal Party
It’s too late for the Liberal Party.  The religious right is a parasite which has taken over the Liberal Party and will feed on the host until they both die.
1:33 A Big Win for the Andrews Government
What have we learned from the result?
Andrews wants to build infrastructure, keep safe schools and keep injecting rooms. The Libs wanted to stop safe schools, stop injecting rooms, reintroduce Religious Instruction classes and dog whistle a xenophobic law and order policy while shackled to a numbskull Federal Neo-Liberal party which denies climate change.
The Insiders program had various people calling on the Liberal hierarchy to turn to the centre but they don’t understand that these people are ideological nutbags. The leadership and the current members are far more right wing than traditional Liberal voters.  They should’ve called for ordinary people to sign up as members and take back the Party.
8:46 Andrew Bolt says the Victorian Liberals did not have enough conviction and need to move further to the right.
Hard-right commentator Prue MacSween had a solution for the Coalition: super-cop and Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton. If he’d been prime minister, “we may have had a chance“.
The Daily Telegraph columnist Miranda Devine occupied her usual territory of obsessing over strangers’ sex lives and being furious at other people for not doing the same. Claiming Guy “wimped out” around the issue of safe schools, Devine said “it illustrates a profound problem for the conservative side of politics. If you don’t engage with the culture wars, you are complicit, and the electorate will view that as a betrayal.”
John Ruddick is the author of Make the Liberal Party Great Again. Why NSW has moved to the right is a story for another day, but it’s clearly the case. Berejiklian can become a Liberal legend and defy all the macro trends pointing to a looming state government defeat in four months … but she needs to move right. Her recent comments on immigration (later copied by Morrison) were a good start.
Liberal senators have refused to agree to the protection of LGBT students from discrimination unless the current legal exemptions are replaced by other protections for religious freedom. The dissenting senators were Ian MacDonald, Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, Jane Hume, Eric Abetz, Amanda Stoker, Jonathon Duniam, Barry O’Sullivan and Slade Brockman.
11:40 This is part of a trend against Liberals over the last 11 elections.
The Good news is Christian Parties disappeared without a trace but unfortunately, so did Reason Party.
Alongside a huge swing to the Labor government led by Daniel Andrews, the Victorian state election marked the disappearance of the Family First, Rise Up Australia and Australian Christian political parties. They appear to have disappeared without a trace.  Unlike the SA election last year Family First and Australian Christian local candidates and local volun...

    Stephen Fry Summarises Our Podcast
    4:10
“A grand canyon has opened up in our world,” Fry said. On one side is the new right, promoting a bizarre mixture of Christianity and libertarianism; on the other, the “illiberal liberals”, obsessed with identity politics and complaining about things like cultural appropriation. These tiny factions war above, while the rest of us watch, aghast, from the chasm below.

Brexit may lead to the breakup of the UK
7:21 But first … what is the UK?
What’s the Difference Between Great Britain and the United Kingdom?
The names Great Britain and United Kingdom are often used interchangeably. However, they are not actually synonymous. The reason for the two names, and the difference between them has to do with the history of the British Isles.
The British Isles are a group of islands off the northwestern coast of Europe. The largest of these islands are Britain and Ireland. (Smaller ones include the Isle of Wight.) In the Middle Ages, the name Britain was also applied to a small part of France now known as Brittany. As a result, Great Britain came into use to refer specifically to the island. However, that name had no official significance until 1707, when the island’s rival kingdoms of England and Scotland were united as the Kingdom of Great Britain.
Ireland, meanwhile, had effectively been an English colony since the 12th century, and after the emergence of Great Britain, it remained under the influence of the British crown. In 1801 it formally joined with Great Britain as a single political entity, which became known as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland—or the United Kingdom for short. However, the union lasted only until 1922, when Ireland (with the exception of six counties in the north) seceded. Ireland soon became a sovereign republic, and its former partner took on the official name of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Great Britain, therefore, is a geographic term referring to the island also known simply as Britain. It’s also a political term for the part of the United Kingdom made up of England, Scotland, and Wales (including the outlying islands that they administer, such as the Isle of Wight). United Kingdom, on the other hand, is purely a political term: it’s the independent country that encompasses all of Great Britain and the region now called Northern Ireland.

Qantas is facing calls to match Virgin’s decision to give priority boarding to war veterans and salute them before take-off.
    3:05 Oh FFS!
Qantas is facing calls to match Virgin’s decision to give priority boarding to war veterans and salute them before take-off.

The US-style proposal comes at the end of a week-long campaign by the Coalition, which will see veterans given discount cards and lapel pins, on top of a half-a-billion dollar extension of the War Memorial.
Defence Industry Minister Steve Ciobo said it “would be terrific” if Qantas matched Virgin’s pledge, which is part of a News Corp campaign.
“I want to congratulate Virgin for, in many respects, being a trailblazer,” he said on Sky News.

“I think it’s tremendous that they come on board and that they honour and salute the service of those men and women who have served our nation in uniform putting themselves in harm’s way.”

Veterans would be saluted at take-off and given first access to Virgin aircraft under the plan supported by Prime Minister Scott Morrison and launched by Virgin Australia CEO John Borghetti on Sunday.
Virgin Australia reconsiders veteran salutes following backlash
Virgin Australia has said it will now seek public consultation before going ahead with plans to offer priority boarding and a salute to veterans prior to take-off on its flights.
    The Moral?
Clearly, there are people who would like to import every bad idea from the Disunited States from saluting veterans, to unrestricted gun ownership to Christian nutters running the parliament.

Anglican school students ask principals to give up right to sack gay teachers
9:13 On Wednesday, it was revealed that 34 Anglican schools in greater Sydney had written to the federal education minister, Dan Tehan, demanding protection of their right to sack gay teachers or expel gay students.
In response, students have begun a letter-writing campaign of their own asking for tolerance from their former principals.More than 1,000 current and former students from Anglican schools have written to their principals asking them to give up “the right to discriminate” against LGBT students and teachers.

An open letter to the 34 schools had amassed 1,000 signatures by Thursday afternoon.

In their letter to the minister, the 34 schools said
“The debate has been polemicised as the right to expel gay students, with little evidence that this occurs, and the right to dismiss gay staff members, again with little evidence that this occurs,” it read.

Bible Lessons are back on the agenda in Victoria
    2:59 From The Age:
Religious instruction classes will be reintroduced into the Victorian state school curriculum if the Coalition wins next month’s election.
Opposition leader Matthew Guy made the announcement at an Australian Christian Lobby pre-election forum on the weekend.
“A government I lead will bring back religious instruction in schools because it’s very important,” Mr Guy told the crowd at Crossway Baptist Church in Burwood East.
He also reiterated his party’s promise to abolish the contentious Safe Schools program and said he was not ashamed to say he was a Christian.
Here is a great article in The Age from Nicola Philp:
I’m all for religious education, just not Matthew Guy’s version.

Firstly, when RE classes run, a teacher has to be in the room to supervise the volunteers who provide the instruction. This is an unreasonable time and cost impost on the school. Secondly, the rules also state that the rest of the students who are opting out are not allowed to be learning anything new, because the children in the RE classes might miss out. Meanwhile, the government then lambasts teachers for falling numeracy/literacy/science standards at the same time. And finally, and probably most importantly, many government schools feel uncomfortable with the singling out of one religion over another and giving it precedence.

    The Blot Report reported :
On Twitter, Milly Majich made a very astute observation: “Why is it that the people who calmly misrepresent ‘Religious Instruction’ as being ‘Religious Education’ are the same ones who hysterically misrepresent ‘Sex Education’ as being ‘Sex Instruction’?” This observation says much about the way the religious think, about how disingenuous they are, and also about their obsession with sex.

Civil confirmation is a secular alternative to religious confirmation. The Icelandic civil confirmation program consists of an 11-week educational program and ceremony for teenagers aged 13-14.
At the end of the course, there is a festive cultural and musical ceremony where some of the kids perform by giving speeches, reading poetry, playing instruments, singing, dancing, doing stand-up or a sketch. In addition, a prominent member of Icelandic society gives a speech about what makes life meaningful, the importance of being honest and true to one’s values, and the right to be different. At the end of the one-hour ceremony, each teenager receives a diploma rolled up like a scroll and tied with a colourful ribbon. The English translation of the text on the diplomas is:
