Why is it that artists like us, think, the more skills we acquire the more money we stand to make? Look I was in this mind set for about 8 years. This mind set served me well for about 2 years, though I quickly found out that there was more to this. A LOT MORE! Just having the skill is meaningless if you don’t know how to sell it or make it something important in your customers eyes. This episode will help you re-frame and understand better how to think about the skills we’re gathering.

As people on a path, journey, or traveling through life, our focus shifts and changes with events in our lives! We give our attention to things at certain points in our lives that we may not have in the past. Just because we are focused on one thing and not another doesn’t mean that “the others” are not important. Nor does it mean that we have moved past them or no longer need them. Rather it means that the things we were previously focused on may not need “the handholding” they once did. They simply just may not need “the work” at this time. This is when they make the transition from being things we are “working on” to things we can “rely on.” These things become part of your foundation. You can always come back and work with them or on them later! They are not gone, rather they are part of your arsenal! Don’t be afraid if what you are focused on, is different then it once was… it will all circle back!

I remember when this really hit me! One of the biggest hurtles for a customer to overcome is the fact that they want to make sure they are “Buying In” to something. Too often in my past, potential customers never became customers, because they didn’t believe I would be around later to service my product. There is something to be said for building something that not only will last the test of time but LOOKS like it will too! This episode goes in-depth on what this means.

The GROWTH you are chasing is the result of your contribution efforts!

Ep39 Achieve More With Collaboration!

Collaborations are tricky. I have been a part of both good and bad collaborations. Though after The Real Art Real Business Summit I now know what a GREAT Collaboration can look like and more importantly what can be achieved! This experience really framed some things differently in my head. It also gave me the opportunity to really analyze and put words to things I have been doing for years with great success! Something magical happens when you shift your thinking to that of openness and collaboration. When EVERYONE is working towards a common goal, it makes the issues that ARE GOING TO ARISE easier to take! It is clarity.

There is something to be said for holding yourself accountable for not only decisions you’ve made but also in the things you’ve agreed to do. Sometimes accountability is in your favor and sometimes it’s not, though it always gives you a chance to learn. For me as a custom jeweler and artist, accountability is huge! My customers trust that I can and will produce the tangible object based on the idea I just sold. If I didn’t hold myself accountable, I wouldn’t still be in business. how about you, do you need more accountability in your life?

As artists we love taking chances with our work. We’re always trying to push the bounds of what’s possible and what our reality can be. For me, the big push or driving force to embrace and take these chances is the, possibility of making something truly great! Why is it then other aspects of our lives especially our businesses do we not have the same love for taking chances? The potential payoff remains the same: “the possibility of making something truly great!” Why is it that we can take chances in one aspect and completely disregard the chances in another? It’s interesting, the more I learn and the more I talk to other artists and people that I think would not be willing to give me information, are the people that are the MOST forthcoming with their knowledge. The joke is the more someone knows the more they want to tell and share with others! I’m finding that this is a HUGE sign of being an expert! Tunnel Vision is one of those things that we talk about being a good thing, and it is. There’s a dark side to it as well! Tunnels have an end, we’ve all heard “there’s a light at the end of the tunnel” right?! The big trap comes when you don’t find yourself in a tunnel that has an end but rather a pit that you’re trapped in. This episode will explain what I mean and help you avoid a pit of despair and allow you to use tunnel vision as a successful tool.
