The Kulturecast

Chris and Eric are joined by guest Phil Mackie to discuss one of the most controversial films ever made A Serbian Film. The film stars Srdjan Todorovic as Milos, a retired porn star who gets drawn back into a web of necrophilia, rape, and pedophilia when he is unwittingly hired to star in a pornographic snuff film. It's not for the faint of heart, weak of stomach, or those prone to nightmares.

Chris and Eric talk a summer blockbuster that is a little John Wick, a little Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and a whole lot of Charlize Theron murdering Russian baddies in Atomic Blonde. The film stars Theron as Lorraine Broughton, an MI6 agent tasked with retrieving a list of double agents in Cold War-era Berlin. It's a thoroughly confusing film that struggles under the weight of its own multiple plot twists.

We continue our One on One interview series with Christopher McDonald, one of the finest character actors working in Hollywood today. Often cast as the sneering comedic villain, he's best known for his roles as Shooter McGavin in Happy Gilmore, Kent Mansley in The Iron Giant, and Wilson Croft in Flubber. He has mastered the comedic villain to a tee along with being a fantastic dramatic actor.

Chris and Eric take a break from Time Travel Movie Month to return to the Alien prequel universe with a look at not only Alien: Covenant but also the film it tries its hardest to make you forget Prometheus. Covenant stars an all-new cast of space exploring dummies who make the unwise decision to investigate a human signal from a nearby habitable planet. All hell breaks loose in traditional Alien fashion, however.

Chris and Eric continue Time Travel Movie Month with a look at Richard Kelly's directorial debut and cult classic Donnie Darko. The film stars a very young Jake Gyllenhaal as the eponymous Donnie, a troubled teenager who is tasked by a man-sized bunny with saving the universe. It's a confusing yet enthralling film that still holds up over fifteen years later due to its amazing cast and novel use of time travel tropes.

Chris and Eric are joined by director Matt Campagna to talk Marvel's newest film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the latest chapter in the story of Peter Quill and his band of galaxy-saving thieves. It's a sequel to the surprisingly successful first entry into the series and it expands on the lineage of Star-Lord.

Chris and Eric kick off Time Travel Movie Month with a look at one of the most confusing films we've ever covered, Shane Carruth's directorial debut Primer. The film features Carruth both in front of and behind the camera as one-half of an entrepreneurial duo that stumbles upon the creation of a time travel device. From there, they encounter moral and philosophical dilemmas that strain their relationship to the breaking point.
