Every year Berlin’s foremost “petri dish” of contemporary electronic, digital and experimental music takes place at the CTM festival. This year CTM celebrated its 20th anniversary, exploring the theme of “Persistence” with a jam-packed 10-day program of concerts, club nights and performances.

One of the artist at this year’s festival was the Indonesian vocalist Rully Shabara, who has become one of South Asia’s most recognisable voices in the underground and experimental music scene. Although he’s most known as one half of the duo Senyawa, this year at CTM he presented three of his other extravagant projects: the experimental punk band Zoo, modern tribal trance in Setabuhan, and the free improvisation project Kombo, which invites various performers from across the globe to improvise together in different constellations. All of these projects threaded through by his incessant personal exploration of the possibilities of his voice.

One of the artist at this year’s festival was the duo Nguyễn + Transitory composed of Baly Nguyễn and Tara Transitory, whose work crosses disciplines of sound, performance, and installation. Together, the two explore themes such as vulnerability, interdependence and intimacy, both in their artistic practices as well as in the everyday. This year at CTM they presented their immersive site-specific installation sound performance, Bird Bird, Touch Touch, Sing Sing, at HAU Berlin. Our talk gives a glimpse of their comprehensive practice and touches on the practice of failing at the impossible.

One of the artists at this year’s festival was Rwanda-born, Belgium-raised Aurélie Nyirabikali Lierman. She is an independent radio producer, vocalist, composer, artist - and one of this year’s Radio Lab winners at CTM. We met up for a talk about her returning to Rwanda, finding her family, and about her winning piece Sogokuru that centers around her first and very special encounters with her grandfather.

The sounds throughout this program are all from works by Aurélie Nyirabikali Lierman, from “iota mikro” “anosmia” and “kariakoo,” and an excerpt from her performance of “Sogokuru” at CTM.
