Nasser Arrabyee discusses the heavy fighting going on outside of Ma'rib, the last stronghold of the Saudi-backed government in Yemen. The Houthi "rebels" are closing in on the city, says Arrabyee, and may capture it within a few days—doing so could give them the bargaining chip they need to finally negotiate an end to Saudi aggression against their country and their people. Arrabyee hails the recent announcement of an end to American support for Saudi "offensive operations" as very good news, but insists that the suffering will not end until the Saudi blockade is abolished. Most of the deaths in Yemen have not been due to direct fighting, but instead to starvation and easily-preventable illnesses like cholera. Hundreds of thousands of civilians, at least, have died from these factors—many of them children—and hundreds of thousands more are at risk for as long as the blockade continues.

Recently, I tuned into the LBRY Community Podcast and near the end, they brought up a question that someone had asked about LBRY. This person wanted to know why it was not built on a privacy coin like Monero. They implied that LBRY should move to a private chain like that. Now, apart from the obvious technical issues regarding such a request, this does bring up something that I often see when people discuss crypto.

People love one-size-fits-all technology. They love to pick one favorite thing or company that does everything. They might be an Apple person who stupidly uses Apple for everything. They might be a Google person who can't get enough of Google's products and services. They might be a Facebook person who puts down any other social media platform because they just don't provide all of the same features as Facebook.

When it comes to crypto, you have the Bitcoin-only people. All other coins are what they call "shitcoins." You also have the Monero-only bunch, who can't imagine any reason to use a public blockchain. You also have the ERC-20 crowd who just can't get enough of their little tokens. Now, there is nothing wrong with having favorites, whether a favorite brand or platform or blockchain, but it is incredibly naive and counter-productive to turn around and then say that everyone should use your preferred solution.

There is no one-size-fits-all blockchain, and there shouldn't be. If one blockchain tried to do it all, we would end up with less innovation, less freedom, less technological progress. If we all had to gather under the banner of one blockchain, the forced association would lead to more infighting and less excitement.

Bitcoin doesn't serve the same purpose as Monero. Ethereum doesn't serve the same purpose as LBRY. Blocknet doesn't serve the same purpose as DASH. If you want a blockchain for crypto conservatives, Bitcoin is there for you. It is tried and true. It may be slow and it may be expensive, but with Bitcoin you know exactly what you are getting and you know that it won't dramatically change overnight. If you want private money, if you value fungibility, Monero and other privacy coins are there for you. If you want to publicly post videos and other content, LBRY is there for you. If you want to connect and interact directly with multiple blockchains using a standard API, then Blocknet is there for you. If you want to build complex, worldwide blockchain applications, Ethereum and the brilliant Ethereum Virtual Machine exist for you.

None of these chains could accomplish everything that the others accomplish, and it would be a waste of time to try and do so. What makes far more sense is having a large number of crypto projects out there, with many different blockchains that are each specially designed to provide certain solutions. Sure, some do more than others, but that doesn't change the point.

With a multitude of projects, everyone gets to focus on their own particular passions and they get to innovate on those. Specialization ultimately leads to innovation for everyone because we can all learn from those projects in order to build the next generation of crypto products and services.

Lots of crypto projects, lots of blockchains, is a good thing. And apart from the benefits in terms of innovation, it's also worth pointing out that if everyone only used a one-size-fits-all blockchain, then that would mean we are all depending on one project, which should worry everyone. Software projects come and go. Blockchains come and go. Tech is innovative one day and deprecated the next. If we all relied on the same thing, then that would put us all at risk because then the enemies of our freedom and autonomy would have a central point to attack in an attempt to seize more control over us.

Don't put all of your eggs in one basket. Don't be naive enough to think that your pet project or bloc...

On Conflicts of Interest #72, Kyle Anzalone discusses the recent attack on US troops in norther Iraq. The attack left one contractor dead and an American soldier injured. Hawks are claiming Iran was behind the attack and the US must respond. The link between Iran and the group that carried out the rocket attack is unclear. However, the ongoing occupation of Iraq is a provocation to some Shi'ite militias. With or without Iranian support, American troops remaining in Iraq makes them targets of militant groups.

The Afghan Study Group released a report calling for the US to extend its two-decade war past the May withdraw date agreed to in the US-Taliban Agreement. The Group's report claims that leaving Afghanistan creates a risk for a civil war. Afghanistan has been in a state of war for several decades. The Group's conclusion that the US war must go on may reflect the deep monetary connect to weapons makers. Of the groups three co-chairs and 12 members, military- industrial complex companies paid nine employees $4 million.

On COI #71, Kyle and Will discuss the Biden administration's continued push to extradite Julian Assange. Picking up where Trump left off, Biden's DOJ has submitted an appeal to UK judge Vanessa Baraitser to challenge her January ruling against extradition on grounds of Assange's mental health, apparently still looking to charge him with 17 counts under the Espionage Act.

The president has also ordered a Pentagon review of US China policy under a new task force, but it's unclear what will change from the prior administration, as Biden has already embarked on many of the same provocative military deployments, drills and operations overseas. Leading the task force is Ely Ratner, a known China hawk in DC's liberal interventionist circles who penned an op-ed last September blasting Trump as "weak" on Beijing.

More than 12 years removed from Obama's pledge to shut down the Guantanamo Bay prison, President Biden has done the same, ordering an inter-agency review of the detention center with the intention of closing it before the end of this term. It remains to be seen just how committed he'll be to the move.

John Kiriakou discusses an alarming new trend in the government and the media, in which the American right is freely compared to some kind of domestic terrorist or insurgent movement. Kiriakou describes the way that a small group of radicals like those who stormed the U.S. Capitol in January are being used to justify a crackdown on anyone on the right. So far this crackdown has manifested mostly in the controlling of speech online and calls for Donald Trump and his allies to be held directly accountable for the actions of a few. But Kiriakou warns that the situation could get even worse. Several high-ranking intelligence officials have recently made public statements likening Americans on "the far right" to insurgent groups that the U.S. military has fought in the war on terror, and implying that the same techniques ought to be used at home. Kiriakou is horrified by this suggestion, reminding us just what those tactics are: spying, no-knock raids, warrantless arrests and even torture and assassination.
