  • Ukraine Scandal for Who: Trump or Biden
On FPF #402, I discuss the impeachment push against Trump. The new impeachment call says Trump tried to leverage US aid to Ukraine to get Ukraine to investigate corruption by Joe Biden's son. Trump has released the transcript of the call showing he did not offer a quid pro quo with Ukraine's president.

While it appears the allegations against Trump are false or overblown, the Ukraine scandal has put Biden's role in the 2014 coup in Ukraine back in the spotlight. Biden was a leader in the Obama White House for the coup that sparked a civil war, empowered white supremacists, caused the people of Crimea to vote to be annexed by Russia, and deepened the divide between NATO and Russia. After the coup, Biden used US aid to pressure the former Ukrainian president to fire a prosecutor that was investigating a company that his son was on the board of.

  • 9/27/19 Mark Perry on America’s Foreign Policy Follies
Mark Perry discusses some of the disasters of America's foreign policy for the last 20 years, particularly U.S. support for Saudi Arabia in their war in Yemen and repeated cases of empowering Iran by starting or supporting ill-advised conflicts that end up making Iran look strong. Perry says there's no way to wrap up our involvement in the region; America simply needs to get out now and stop perpetrating this injustice altogether.

  • 9/27/19 Daniel Lazare on What Trump-Ukraine Is Really About
Daniel Lazare rehashes some of the details of "Russiagate", focusing on the obvious media malfeasance and bias against President Trump, and the theory that the so-called "intelligence community" was doing everything they could to sabotage him. The latest episode in this conspiracy is the Ukraine impeachment inquiry, which democrats seem to have taken up full bore, while acting as if the Russia collusion issue never happened at all.

  • 9/27/19 Jonathan Fenton-Harvey on Trump’s Pandering to Saudi Arabia
Jonathan Fenton-Harvey talks about President Trump's close relationship with Saudi Arabia and his corresponding push against Iran. Trump seems uniquely willing to come out and say his real reasons for this closeness—that it's all about money. Trump likes that Saudi Arabia buys billions of dollars worth of weapons from America, which he claims is good for the U.S. job market. He is willing to sacrifice civilian lives in Yemen for the sake of the domestic economy. Ironically, Trump's isolation of Iran by primarily supporting Saudi Arabia and the UAE has actually pushed Iran closer to America's enemies, and in a way has granted them rhetorical victories simply by the claim that they are behind every successful attack or operation in the region.

    Discussed on the show:

"Trump's pandering to Saudi Arabia is tearing the Middle East apart" (Al-Araby)
"How ties with China bolster the UAE's bid for regional dominance" (Middle East Eye)

Jonathan Fenton-Harvey is a journalist and researcher, who focuses on political issues and humanitarian crises in the Middle East and North Africa. He writes regularly for Al-Araby and Middle East Eye. Find him on Twitter @jfentonharvey.

  • 9/27/19 Ali Demirdas Explains Why the YPG Can’t Do What Washington Wants
Ali Demirdas talks about the Syrian YPG, a Kurdish organization associated with the Kurdistan Workers' Party, which America has supported against Assad in Syria. Demirdas thinks this partnership is ill-advised, and that the YPG's chances of ruling significant parts of the country without U.S. support are low. He also outlines some of the ways America has strengthened Iran's influence in the Middle East again and again, even though they are supposedly our biggest enemy in the region.

  • 9/27/19 Patrick Cockburn on the Changing Nature of Global Warfare
Patrick Cockburn discusses the recent attacks on a Saudi oil facility, an American drone, and two Japanese tankers, all of which have been pinned to various degrees on Iran. It's unclear to what extent Iran actually was involved—it's always possible that this is a false narrative being used to gin up tensions and cause a war—but no matter who was responsible, these attacks demonstrate the extent to which countries like Iran and Yemen could wage asymmetrical war on more powerful countries like the U.S., severely hurting their adversaries with little cost and no risk. With this in mind, those in power need be extremely cautious about America's relationship with Iran and in the rest of the region.

    Discussed on the show:

  • 9/27/19 Sheldon Richman on His New Book, ‘Coming to Palestine’
Scott interviews Sheldon Richman about his new book, a collection of essays on the history of Israel and Palestine. He explains that almost everything we've heard about the official narrative of the founding of Israel is wrong—far from a country of peaceful Jews constantly under threat of being pushed into the sea by a bunch of hateful Arabs, Richman says the Israelis continues to exist only by occupation, colonization, and removal of Palestinians from land that their families have occupied for years. Richman addresses another popular point of argument, which is the biblical justification for the Jewish right of return to the land. Even if you're a fan of that argument, he says, the non-Jews in the Middle East probably have a better claim to the land than Jews who live in Europe and America, since today's Middle Easterners are the ones that are actually descended from the Jews who were kicked out by the Romans 2000 years ago. Richman's book is the place to go to understand this history and many other arguments around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
