  • 5/10/19 Ken Silverstein on Trump’s Crimes in Venezuela
Scott talks to Ken Silverstein about what's really going on in Venezuela. The mainstream media will tell you that the country is starving and in chaos, but Silverstein has been there himself and says that most people actually have food and support Maduro more than the opposition. The negative coverage, says Silverstein, is an attempt to build support for a U.S.-backed coup, which he thinks is unlikely to actually ever succeed.

    Discussed on the show:

"Why a Coup Is Unlikely in Venezuela" (The New Republic)
"Caracas Chronicles, Part I of an Ongoing Series" (Washington Babylon)
Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media

  • 5/10/19 Chris Woods on the Civilian Casualties in Raqqa from US-led Airstrikes
Airwars' Chris Woods joins the show to discuss the recent findings that coalition airstrikes recently killed over a thousand civilians in Raqqa. The UN also estimates that although most residents were able to escape the city, 70% lost all their property in the bombings. The casualty numbers are 10 times higher than what U.S. officials have admitted.

  • War with China, Iran or Venezuela?
On FPF #347, I discuss the reckless actions the US is taking against China, Iran, and Venezuela. Trump new tariffs could restart the trade war with China. He is also increasing challenges to Chinese territorial claims in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea. Bolton made a big show of the US deploying the USS Abe Lincoln to counter threats from Iran. The deployment of the aircraft carrier is routine, however, the hawks in Trump's administration seem determined to provoke a war with Iran. The regime change effort in Venezuela is ongoing. I review the one-sided media coverage of the events.

  • Papadopoulos: Agent or Mark guest Joanne Leon & Will Porter
Will Porter and Joanne Leon return to FPF to do more debunking of the Russiagate conspiracy theory. Joanne, Will, and Kyle focus in on the story of George Papadopoulos. According to the conspiracy theory, Papadopoulos was connecting Trump's campaign to Russia for receiving secret information about Hillary Clinton's emails. Papadopoulos claims he was the mark of some deep state actors who were attempting to set him up. Joanne and Will make sense of competing claims and changing narratives.

Will Porter is a staff writer at RT. He has bylines at Antiwar.com. Consortium News, and Libertarian Institute.

Joanne Leon is the host of the Around the Empire podcast.

  • 5/7/19 Ro Khanna on ending the War in Yemen
Scott talks to Congressman Ro Khanna about the bipartisan efforts in congress to end the war in Yemen. Despite a lack of popular awareness of this issue, explains Khanna, the humanitarian disaster in Yemen is horrific, and the U.S. should end its support for the Saudis immediately. He says that President Trump's good instincts on getting out of pointless wars have not carried through into sound policy, probably because the cabinet and the national security state actually control his foreign policy.

Ro Khanna has served as the U.S. Representative from California's 17th congressional district since 2017. He has worked with Thomas Massie, Mark Pocan, Walter Jones, and others to introduce legislation that would end the war in Yemen.

  • 5/3/19 David Swanson on the Decline in Military Recruitment
David Swanson joins the show to talk about the decline in military recruitment, which the secretary of the navy recently tried to explain away by falsely claiming that thousands of high schools have started denying access to recruiters, something they are legally barred from doing. Swanson points out, however, that the real reason for low recruitment is that the American people are getting fed up with the endless wars. The young people coming of age today were born during the wars we're still fighting, so they grew up with a sense of their futility and an understanding that they might never end.

Marko Marjanovic returns to FPF to talk about Venezuela and Syria. Kyle and Marko discuss how US regime change efforts in Venezuela have failed to topple Maduro. The US actions have hurt the Venezuelan people and increased Maduro's popularity. In Syria, Assad is continuing to work to retake all of his country. • 5/3/19 Robert Gaines on Achieving Peace in Afghanistan
Robert Gaines, an Afghan war combat veteran and co-author with Scott of a few recent articles for Breitbart.com and The National Interest, discusses America's continuing war in Afghanistan and the possible reasons for hope, as peace talks there are advancing further than they ever have. Scott and Gaines agree that it would probably make the most sense not to try to have a single state at all. If the various tribes and ethnic groups were allowed to govern their own areas, instead of a central government from Kabul, there would probably be much less reason for fighting and political unrest.

  • 5/3/19 Greg Palast on Venezuela and the Death of American Journalism
Scott talks to Greg Palast about Venezuela, Deepwater Horizon, and the importance of whistleblowers like Chelsea Manning. Palast explains that most Venezuelans still basically support President Maduro, and that the prospect of Guaidó—a wealthy white guy—ruling reminds them of the apartheid of their past. He also laments that prominent journalists at the New York Times and elsewhere, who have won awards thanks to Julian Assange and Chelsea Manning, happily go along with their arrests as though the government will never come for them.

    Discussed on the show:

"Chelsea Manning, Julian Assange, WikiLeaks, and The Deepwater Horizon" (Greg Palast)
    "Nuland-Pyatt leaked phone conversation" (YouTube)
"In Venezuela, White Supremacy Is a Key Driver of the Coup" (Truthout)
Economic Sanctions as Collective Punishment: The Case of Venezuela

Investigative reporter Greg Palast covered Venezuela for BBC Television and The Guardian during Hugo Chavez’s presidency. He is the author of several New York Times bestsellers including The Best Democracy Money Can Buy, now a movie available on Amazon Prime. A documentary of Palast’s work for BBC-TV, The Assassination of Hugo Chavez, is available as a free download at Palast’s site, GregPalast.com.
