  • What You Focus On Grows!

In this week’s podcast episode I am talking about the concept of what you focus on grows.

I have recently had a number of enquiries for done for you packages in TLC and although I love that people are coming to me for social media help and done for you projects this is not truly what I want to focus on.

When Charlotte (my ex-business partner) left in January I came into the new year not wanting to bring on any more done for you services, therefore allowing me to focus purely on the TLC membership offering for existing and new members.

My purpose and drive for TLC is to help as many people in the industry grow and develop their landscaping and garden design businesses to be super successful.

Today I wanted to share this with you to remind you to stay in your own lane and not try to be everything to everybody.

Think about your business, have you offered a service you wasn’t completely sure on but somebody has asked if you can do it and you feel like you can’t say no the money? In this instance you need to remember that what you focus on grows, so if you want to grow the garden design side of your business then focus more on talking about, promoting and doing more of this.

REMINDER: If you truly believe in what you do and believe that you can achieve your goals and dreams, then you will not be distracted with other things and will not be distracted out of your own lane.

Here is another podcast episode that will help with this, all about boundary setting - check it out below.

  • Successfully Getting off The Tools with Sam from Selby Landscapes

In this week’s podcast episode I am joined by Sam Selby, the owner of Selby Landscapes who has recently managed to get off the tools and I discuss with him his landscaping journey.

Sam is one of my TLC VIP clients and has run his business for over 12 years and has now successfully managed to come off the tools and stay off the tools in his design and landscaping business.

An important factor of Sam being able to come off the tools was employing the right people. Dulcie his wife joined him around 2 years ago to help with all the admin tasks and another Sam who works for Selby Landscapes takes n the role of estimating projects.

Now with Sam being off the tools he is able to be a project manager, reassuring the client throughout the process and keeping control of the quality of projects. Having more time available has meant that Sam has been able to focus more on improving the marketing elements of his business such as the website and how he can improve the Selby service to clients.

I asked Sam: ‘How important is your mindset?’

Sam believes you should believe in yourself and enjoy your job! Staying positive to balance work and normal life is also key.

  • Important Announcement: Practice What You Preach!

In this week’s podcast episode I am giving you an insight into the recent events in my landscaping and garden design business that could have gone terribly wrong.

Going into the second week of the summer holidays and now having childcare planned for 3 days this week means I can focus work on my businesses on these days.

Recently I noticed I hadn’t updated the cash flow forecast for 2-3 months and a few issues had become apparent. I woke up one morning at 5am and knew I needed to just get it done and then look at solutions. With everyone still being asleep in the house I could focus entirely on looking at the business from a financial and planning perspective.

There is a book I high recommend, called Eat That Frog and it’s about getting your big tasks done first and the smaller tasks after to stop yourself from putting off the bigger tasks! This is what I did with  the overdue cash flow forecasting.

A tip I have for you is if your going to look for problems then you’re not going to move forward however, if you would like to change your mind set, always know there is always a way to get out of any mess you’re in and there is always a solution.

Secondly, please remember we are all human! We all make mistakes and the most important thing to do is to learn from these and make improvements that will ensure you are continuing to be successful in your business.

  • Is There A Right Way To Run Your Landscaping Or Design Business?

In this week’s episode I am talking about is there a right way to run your landscaping or garden design business and the effect of the economy at the moment on you and your business.

In my opinion there is not a specific right way or wrong way however, there are ways that make business easier:

    1. One priority for a business owner is cashflow forecasting which allows you to create growth within in the business, making informed decisions from a place of fact and figures rather than guesswork
    2. Another is getting clear on what clients you’re looking for. Are you going for the 5 grand jobs, 10 grand, 20 grand, 50 grand jobs? Where are these customers spending time online and offline and how can you get in front of them? A good way to look at this is to review where previous clients have come from using your enquiry log to see what marketing has worked and what areas they are in.
    3. Another is do not stop utilising the marketing avenues you have set up, with costs rising you may want to cut back on things to reduce overheads, however, do not make the same mistake as others by cutting back on marketing. This is a time to invest in marketing and strategy that works in order to sustain business.
    4. A great exercise to do in times like these is to look at your goals and plans as they may change or need to be tweaked.
    5. Next to look at is your staff and in times of economic downturns you may be able to find good staff (unfortunately)
    6. Finally there is no getting away from it we are sales people! There are going to be periods throughout the year where enquiry's are less or we experience poorer quality enquiries meaning you need to get good (or better) at selling!
    7. TOP TIP: If you do not already have a cashflow forecast or enquiry log? This is your sign to start, go create these now as they will allow you to make more informed decisions in your business going forward.

    8. Lighting New Avenues with Paul from Nitelux

In this week’s podcast episode I am joined by Paul Naylor who is the owner of Greenlite and Nitelux. We are discussing everything garden lighting and how this can help you grow your landscaping and design business.

      Who is Paul?

Paul started off as an electrician (over 25 years experience) and then decided to focus on outdoor garden lighting. Paul set up Greenlite over 15 years ago a company that specialises in designing and installing outdoor lighting systems.

Paul then decided to manufacturer his own outdoor lights which is where Nitelux was born and after installing on his own jobs in Greenlite decided to sell them to others just 6 months ago.

      Why choose Nitelux

Nitelux products have been created for contractors by contractors. They have the benefit of being ‘plug and plug’ 12 volt systems so there is no need for an electrons to fit. Therefore it gives garden designers and landscapers the opportunity to create a lighting scheme for their gardens and then install themselves.

There are three advantages to this:

      1. The opportunity to get trade discount and supply the products with a healthy mark up
      2. You can charge for the installation time rather than subcontracting out to an electrician
      3. You get full support from the Nitelux team who will help with lighting designs to technical advice when on the job!
      4. Nitelux’s aim is to make it easier for landscapers and garden designers to offer a full outdoor lighting service whilst benefitting from the support and using high quality, easy to use lights.

As a valued long-standing TLC member and ‘done for you’ client I want to support Paul with his journey as well as help many of you create another income stream and give you an easy way to increase prices and profits.

      5. Did Someone Say School Holidays?

In this week’s podcast episode I am talking all about school holidays. This can be a time to many parents of how the hell can I work and look after the children?!?

But I am here to show you how we can plan for them and how to make it the least stressful time of the year instead of (one of ) the most stressful times of the year.

It comes down to two things:

        1. Planning
        2. Asking for help
        3. First you need to map out the 6 weeks the kids are off for and you need to decide how many days you want to work? Maybe 3 days a week, like me so you have 3 days to keep working towards your goals and work in the business.

Then you need to work out who you know that can look after the kids on the other days and ask for help, can grandparents or friends look after the kids once or twice a week? Are there clubs or activities the kids would like to do that frees you up for focussed work effort?

The main takeaway from this episode is to make sure you have sufficiently planned the 6 weeks so you don’t feel stressed or overwhelmed. It can be hard to focus on both kids and business so separating them out makes life much easier.

Don’t have kids? You can still use this method to create time to work ON the business rather than IN the business. Utilise the 6 weeks to see if you can get 1 day a week off being in the business in order to work on the business.

Finally do you have your goals set for the rest of the year? It can sometimes feel that we are over halfway through the year and we haven’t achieved what we set out to do. So look at what you would like to achieve by the 31st December and write these down or even better, create a vision board to look at everyday and know what you’re working towards.

        4. 4 Ways to Generate Leads For Your Landscaping & Garden Design Business

In this week’s podcast episode I am giving you 4 ways to generate more leads/enquiries in your landscaping or garden design business.

This time of year always seems to attract more time wasters and not so serious projects but I am not worried, are you?

Here are four ways to generate leads that I have used in my landscaping design and build company that have got results:

          1. Referrals - You can get referrals from happy clients to recommend you, setting up a referral  scheme to incentivise people to refer you and you could ask your business and wider network contacts for referrals. Think about who you know that is around your ideal client and who are your super fans who would happily recommend you?
          2. Website - Is your website easy to use for your clients? Is it easy for them to find and fill out your contact form? What exactly do you want your client to do when they get there? There are so many ways in which you can get your website generating leads. Listen in for more ideas.
          3. Lead Magnets - What are they? A piece of content you give away for free in return for someone's contact details. It needs to be valuable to the client, so what questions do you get asked all the time from your clients? Could you create something that answers these questions? Examples of lead magnets include; video training, checklist, guide, e-book, webinar, planner…the list goes on. Just get creating it and then marketing it!
          4. Print - This could be leaflets that you post through peoples doors or brochures. The main points to remember are; it needs to be eye catching and easy to read with strong branding. Then you need to tell them what to do next i.e. phone you, email you or scan the QR code. Once the design is done you need to pay attention to distribution.

          6. It's Ok to be YOU

In this week’s podcast episode I am talking about what to do when you feel like you’re going nowhere or just even having a bad day, like me today.

Do you find that your days dont happen the way you planned? Here are some tips to help you focus when things don’t plan out the way you want them to:

            1. Make a list of all thing you need to do by the end of the day and make sure you do the big tasks first so you can get these ticked off and complete the smaller wins after.
            2. You could listen to an inspirational podcast to clear your head space.
            3. Journaling your thoughts out can help clear your mind.
            4. Consistency is the key with everything, that could be showing up on social, doing something for yourself or just practicing gratitude.
            5. You need to show up as YOU and not try to be somebody else or feel fearful of showing your most authentic self.

You have 5 months left of the year so let’s make it the best end to the year in your business.

            6. 3 Tips to Getting More Enquiries & Paying Clients

In this week’s podcast episode I am giving you tips on how to generate more enquiries and make more sales.

I have been having many conversations with people in the industry and our amazing TLC members and they have noticed a lower level of enquiries happening at the moment.

With that in mind I thought a podcast to help generate more enquiries would be pretty timely 😊

Have you been getting a slower level of enquires compared to last year or the last quarter? If so this episode is for you.

              1. Consistency -  Being consistent in your branding, for example having your brand EVERYWHERE - on uniform, social media, vans etc. Also using your brand colours on social posts, then people will start to recognise your posts by colour and associate with you and your business.
              2. Reviewing your marketing (regularly!) - Asking clients where they found you and keeping an accurate enquiry log is key here. You will need data in order to review and see what's working and what's not working, so you can do more of the marketing that works and less of what doesn’t.
              3. Following up - Are you guilty of not following up every lead? We can all be guilty of this particularly when it is really busy, however this is an important factor in converting more. Also look at how you follow up quotes too.
              4. TOP TIP: Having an accurate enquiry log to review where the jobs are coming from (location wise and through what marketing strategy)

If you want more help with generating enquiries, converting leads and generally creating a more profitable landscaping and garden design business then join our waitlist! You will then be first to know when we are re-opening our doors to new members and get some bonus content too!

              5. The Bizarre World of Landscaping Part 2

In this week’s podcast episode it is part 2 about how bizarre the industry is, following on from the previous episode. This episode is focussing more on sales and marketing techniques and how much they do or don't apply to the landscaping industry.

                1. Breaking down quotes - Some clients asking for quotes to be broken down into each material and labour. In other industry's this is never asked - my biggest gripe with clients!
                2. Offers - ‘Buy now and get 10% off’ If you take 10% off a £100,000 project that’s a £10,000 discount! This may also attract the wrong clients for you as they are the people who do not want to pay how much you’re worth and will try to negotiate price.
                3. Using certain social media platforms - Where are your ideal clients, which platforms are they on? Look at the platforms and the likelihood of your ideal client purchasing from someone on these platforms.
                4. Time constraints - Pushing clients to make a decision in a certain period of time. A landscaping project is a huge investment for clients, they could be spending between ten thousand to a hundred thousand pound or more so to get them to make a snap decision or put time limitations on their buying decision is not appropriate.
