Emma speaks with Ettingermentum of the "Ettingermentum Newsletter" on SubStack to discuss the state of play with just about 5 and a half weeks before the 2024 election. First, Emma runs through updates on the arraignment of Eric Adams, Harris’ polling lead, the US economy, Bibi’s visit to the UN, the rising death toll in Lebanon, Jim Clyburn’s endorsement of Lina Khan, Democratic Party funds, Trump’s legal woes, a potential censure of Clay Higgins, and an impending Kansas City rent strike, before tackling Elon Musk’s evident banning of Ken Klippenstein in a case that oddly resembles a certain #TwitterFiles. Ettingermentum then joins diving right into the misconceptions about the upcoming US Presidential election, particularly when it comes to polling, first stepping back to assess what pundits got wrong about the development of the US electorate over the last eight years – particularly in terms of solid Dem performance in the Sunbelt and Midwest – before diving deeper into why Kamala Harris’ floor and ceiling in these major swing states are significantly higher than Trump (despite her performance also somewhat raising Trump’s floor). After expanding on Harris’ commitment to the Democrats’ well-ossified campaign strategy of cozying up to corporate elites, Ettingermentum and Emma tackle the likelihood of a strategic or policy shift by Harris once in office and unpack the gap that still exists in the polling for her and other major Democratic candidates in swing states. Ettingermentum then gives us a greater review of polling across the Electoral College and explores what a potential escalation of conflict in the Middle East could do to change that, wrapping up the show with some fun musings on the state of political polling. Emma speaks with Jeff Schuhrke, assistant professor in labor studies at SUNY Empire State University, to discuss his recent book Blue-Collar Empire: The Untold Story of US Labor's Global Anticommunist Crusade. Then, she speaks with Seamus Malekafzali, freelance writer and journalist, proprietor of the Seamus Malekafzali newsletter on SubStack, to discuss the recent Israeli offensive into Lebanon. First, Emma runs through updates on the indictment of Eric Adams, Netanyahu’s visit to the UN, Israel’s devastating offensives in Lebanon and Gaza, election spending, the GOP’s anti-Haitian attacks, US-Israel aid, Harris’ cozying up to crypto, Lina Khan vs. AI, Mark Robinson, and Hurricane Helene, before parsing a little deeper through the beautifully idiotic actions outlined in the fed’s Adams indictment. Professor Jeff Schuhrke then joins, diving right into the history of the AFL-CIO’s internal cold war and the havoc it wreaked on the institution’s organizing capacities, stepping back to outline the start difference in organizing of the then-separate AFL and CIO during the union boom at the peak of the Great Depression in the 1930s, with the Congress of Industrial Organizations taking on a grassroots approach, organizing across the spectrum of the working class to improve class consciousness, including among the growing communist factions in the US, and thus rapidly and drastically expanding their base, unionizing massive corporations, and establishing many openly-communist-led unions, all nationwide, a strategy directly contrasted by the American Federation of Labor’s establishment and anti-communist tact of this era. Moving into the 1940s, Professor Schuhrke explores how the post-war period, between the overwhelming backlash to a wave of strikes in 1945, the growth of an anti-communist government-backed military industry, and the onset of the McCarthyist Red Scare, saw a complete inversion of the growing labor power of the last decade, with full-scale communist purges and the GOP’s takeover of Congress crippling both the numbers and the rights that had so bolstered labor, resulting in a decimated CIO limping to join the AFL in 1955. From here, Jeff walks Emma through the rapid expansion of the AFL-CIO’s anti-communist aims, as funding poured in from the State Department to sponsor an international effort by the labor federation fundamentally conflating anti-communist fear-mongering with labor organizing, be it through worker training or illegal, mafia-backed intimidation practices, putting any attempt to unify the working class to the side as labor took a back seat to US empire, with union rates reflecting exactly that. They wrap up the interview by tackling what we can learn from this period of corruption and degradation as the US finds itself amid a labor renaissance. Séamus Malekafzali then walks Emma through the past few weeks of Israel’s terror campaign on Lebanon, first tackling the brief retaliatory attacks from Hezbollah in late August following Israel’s assassination of commander Fuad Shukr that preceded Israel’s escalation, before diving deep into the material impact of this offensive, between the wide-scale terrorism of Israel’s rigged pagers and communications devices, to their following record-setting bombardments in South Lebanon. After stepping back to explore how Israel’s offensives in Lebanon and against Hezbollah have been central to the IDF developing their tactics of collective punishment, Séamus wraps up with how these tactics have devastated South Lebanon over the last week, pushed the population into a complete crisis, and what it means for the future of the Lebanese people and Zionist expansion.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they unpack the absurd controversy developing around Chappelle Roan’s statement critiquing the Democratic Party (while still saying she’ll vote Harris), and the predictably disgusting (and unsuccessful) backlash to Bisan Owda’s Emmy nomination. A Watchdog Found They Were Retaliated Against.” Then, they speak with Ari Berman, national voting rights correspondent at Mother Jones, author of Minority Rule: The Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People—and the Fight to Resist It, to discuss the recent attempts by Republican legislatures and voting commissions to change rules ahead of the 2024 election. First, Sam runs through updates on Israel’s offensive on Lebanon, ProPublica’s report on Blinken’s coverup of Israeli war crimes in front of Congress, Harris’ polling, Senate races, the execution of Marcellus Williams, a Haitian non-profit’s case against Trump and Vance, Florida’s education bans, corruption in Eric Adams’ administration, the InfoWars auction, and the FBI report on dropping violent crime everywhere except anti-LGBTQ hate, before parsing a little deeper through Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s active coverup in front of Congress, and John Kirby’s poor attempt to address it. Sharon Lerner then joins, first stepping back to reassess her year-long coverage, beginning in 2022, of the system of management intimidation and pressure set up by the Trump Administration EPA’s “New Chemicals” department, pushing scientists tasked with assessing the impact of new chemicals on human health and the environment to overlook issues, avoid deeper investigation, and even remove notes on them from any official reports, all serving to expedite corporations’ ability to get these chemicals to market regardless of safety concerns. Lerner and Sam then look to the structure of the EPA as a whole, tracing how this active pressure trickled down from executives to lawmakers to management before looking to the recently released report from the Inspector General, outlining in broad strokes the system of intimidation and retaliation, as they unpack the slow-walking of any major change to the administration under Biden’s presidency, and how that can change. Ari Berman then sets his targets on Georgia as he walks Sam through the state GOP’s overwhelming effort to pre-emptively rig every step of the electoral system in the lead-up to the 2024 elections, with a particular focus on replacing the election boards with election-denying cronies to changes in mail-in ballot eligibility. After briefly touching on the role of RFK’s ongoing ballot shenanigans in further threatening mail-in-enfranchisement – particularly in Wisconsin and North Carolina – Berman and Sam tackle an ongoing legal case out of Mississippi that has the potential to risk mail-in ballots nationwide if it makes it to to the Supreme Court before November, wrapping up the interview with a conversation on the need for Dems to emphasize communicating voting rights, encouraging voting, and challenging this effort head-on.

And in the Fun Half: Sam first unpacks yesterday’s state-backed killing of Marcellus Williams, walking through the myriad issues ignored by the Missouri government and Supreme Court in his case, the overwhelming push to stay the case, and his son’s reflections on the day of his death. Professor Rob Larson then joins, first running through the numbers behind the modern era of wealth inequality and the validity of the parallels with the inequalities of the Gilded Age – from the overwhelming wealth of the top 1% to the minimal holdings of the masses – and the overwhelming social isolation of the upper class via class segregation that defines the stratification of these eras. Expanding on this, Professor Larson walks through the disconnect of the ruling class on the level of the interpersonal (with some strong examples from one Elon Musk) and material, diving deep into how both social institutions (e.g., the media) and economic institutions create (and celebrate) isolated worlds for the uber-wealthy, with boundaries explicitly designed avoid undesirables. Rob, Sam, and Emma then step back and examine the devastating impact this grotesque excess has on the rest of society, particularly in the opportunity cost of the absurd endeavors of the elite, before moving into an expansive conversation on the role of philanthropy in bolstering the power, ego, and wealth of the uber-rich, eventually wrapping up the interview with the central role labor and social organizing must play in the fight to even this playing field.

Expanding on this, Heer unpacks the growing pictures of a Trump campaign embroiled in chaos, as their main spokesfolks for the disillusioned man – JD Vance and RFK Jr. – continue to flounder in their media rounds while the candidate himself cannot help but get “Loomered.” Wrapping up, Jeet, Sam, and Emma look to the electoral state of the race, unpacking the central role Pennsylvania, North Carolina (thank you, Mark Robinson!), and Georgia are likely to play come November and assessing the rhetoric Harris and Trump are using to court those voters.

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with Noah Kulwin and Brendan James to discuss the most recent season of the Blowback podcast. Then, she speaks with Ross Barkan, contributing writer at New York Magazine and columnist at Crain's New York, to discuss his recent piece published in The Nation entitled "Is Eric Adams’s Luck About to Run Out?" First, Emma runs through updates on Israel’s attacks on civilians in Lebanon, the UN General Assembly’s overwhelming vote to end Israel’s military presence in Gaza and the West Bank, reporting on Biden’s weapons transfers, the uncommitted movement, the teamsters’ lack of a presidential endorsement, swing state polling, New York State’s Democratic Party problem, the Fed, Russian offensives in Ukraine, Beshear’s conversion therapy ban, and dropping overdose rates in the US, before parsing a little more thoroughly through the developing story of Israel’s en-masse attack of Lebanese citizens (Hezbollah or not) via the use of rigged communications technologies. Emma is then joined by Noah Kulwin and Brendan James as they outline why they chose Cambodia for the focus of the fifth season of Blowback, unpacking its role as a central (and emblematic) node in the constellation of US intervention in Southeast Asia during the Cold War. Expanding on this, Kulwin and James dive into the complex cast of characters that dominate this season, first tackling the Nixon-Kissinger paring that set the blueprint for the entire thing, first sabotaging Vietnam peace negotiations in 1968 to help ensure a GOP victory, before centering a strategy of “Peace with Honor,” by which Nixon meant a shift to more expansive bombing campaigns, and immediately expanding said campaign by pushing Cambodian Royal Norodom Sihanouk to embrace a US carpet bombing campaign on his country (not war, totally not war), all while hiding the entire campaign behind a dual reporting system, separate books, and direct, behind-the-scenes communications between the White House and relevant parties. Shifting focus to Cambodia, Noah and Brendan parse through the Khmer Rouge’s origins as an auxiliary, socialist-aligned force with the North Vietnamese (the basis for Nixon’s carpet bombing), only to help launch a full-scale Civil War in the wake of the US-backed deposition of Sihanouk by South Vietnam in 1970, resulting in years of bloodshed (increased by ongoing US bombings) that saw the Khmer Rouge gain more and more territory and power, until the formerly-small-guerilla movement successfully sacked the capital city of Phnom Penh, launching five years of forced labor, full-scale genocide and the extermination of ethnic minorities, refugee crises, mass executions and more under the rule of Pol Pot. Continuing, James and Kulwin move into the breakdown of Cambodian society under the brutal regime of Pol Pot and expanding conflict as the Khmer Rouge turned against the North Vietnamese government that had supported them (in part due to the Khmer Rouge’s budding relationship with the US and the West), resulting in said government launching a full-scale invasion of Cambodia, getting rid of Pol Pot and establishing a friendly regime, all to the condemnation of the West that had been peacefully watching Cambodians die for nearly a decade. After briefly expanding on the mythology tying the Khmer Rouge’s rule to the greater Soviet movement and the obvious failures of said narrative when you look into who was actually supporting the regime, Emma, Brendan and Noah jump to the modern period, unpacking the symbiotic nature of a fully-capitalist Cold War between the US and China, and what that has meant for Cambodian development over the last decade, wrapping up the interview by running through the final figures on the mass deaths from US carpet bombing (100-150k), the US-backed Civil War (300-500k), and the following Cambodian Genocide (1.7m). Ross Barkan and Emma then dive right into the overwhelming cloud of corruption around NYC Mayor Eric Adams, including FOUR federal investigations ranging from domestic to foreign corruption, and the correlating complete incompetence of his governance, with Barkan comparing his administration to a Tammany Hall that didn’t actually deliver anything to the people. After briefly expanding on the role an overwhelmingly unpopular New York Democratic Party is having on races up and down the ballot, Ross and Emma tackle the particulars of Adams’ corrupt relationship with the NYPD and its deadly impact.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they unpack North Carolina GOP Gubernatorial Nominee Mark Robinson’s odd sermon on the ability to take and make life with one’s genitalia, JD Vance’s continuing commitment to racist conspiracy, and Ryan Grim’s cathartic shutdown of Matt Walsh’s absurd anti-Haitian bigotry. Sam speaks with Sarah Lazare, editor of Workday Magazine and contributing editor at In These Times, to discuss her recent reporting on the UAW fighting to restore a shuttered Stellantis plant in Belvidere, Illinois. Then, they speak with Mark Joseph Stern, senior writer at Slate, to discuss the recent reporting in the New York Times regarding Chief Justice Roberts’ influence on the Jan. 6th cases that were in front of the Supreme Court. First,  Sam runs through updates on Israel’s widespread and indiscriminate attacks across Lebanon, the UN’s vote on ending Israeli occupation in Gaza and the West Bank, Fed cuts, polling, the GOP blocking another IVF protection attempt, Mike Johnson’s desperate attempt to stop a Trump-backed push for a government shutdown, Express Scripts vs. the FTC, and growing labor action in the US, before watching Sen. Kennedy set quite the example at a hate crimes hearing. Sarah Lazare then joins, diving right into a history of Stellantis’ plant in Belvidere, Illinois, from its opening in 1965 and through its peak in the late 2010s – when it employed nearly a third of the town’s population – before the Corporation-formerly-known-as-Chrysler decided to idle the plant in 2023, essentially taking away thousands of jobs from the city. Continuing, Lazare then unpacks the plant’s role in UAW negotiations with Stellantis in the wake of their overwhelmingly successful stand-up strike against the Big Three automakers (Stellantis, Ford, GM), with the reopening of the Belvedere plant one of many unprecedented wins for the union and emblematic of their emphasis on bringing workers into the manufacturing decisions that shape their lives. After briefly expanding on the details of the UAW’s major wins from the stand-up strike, as well as some concessions, Sarah walks Sam through the devastating impact the idling of this plant has had on Belvidere, the incredible effort by other locals and the broader UAW to use their labor to demand the return of this plant, and the likelihood of the fight expanding into a broader strike, before wrapping up with a conversation on the ripple effect of labor rights and the importance of solidarity in building a better life for us all. Mark Joseph Stern and Sam then jump right into two major stories coming out of the recent SCOTUS leak, with Stern first outlining the revelations of Chief Justice John Roberts’ complete MAGA-pilling over the last few years, including taking a commanding role on three major Supreme Court cases regarding Donald Trump, spearheading the entirety of the immunity decision and icing out the liberal judges, taking Alito off of the January 6th decision, and pushing for a landmark ruling on Trump’s ballot access case. After expanding on the… “jurisprudence” behind Roberts’ shift, Sam and Mark parse through the mystery of the leak, and what it tells us about the state of the Court.

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Dr. Melvin Rogers, professor of political science and associate director of the Center for Philosophy, Politics, & Economics at Brown University, to discuss his recent book The Darkened Light of Faith: Race, Democracy, and Freedom in African American Political Thought. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump’s second would-be assassin, JD Vance’s unbridled racism (and the related shutdowns in Springfield, Ohio), the Harris campaign, Boeing’s labor strike, Israel’s continuing murder of its own citizens, Yemen-Israel conflict, Boar’s Head’s fiasco, Eric Adam’s absurd corruption, and Laura Loomer’s budding relationship with Donald Trump, before parsing through JD Vance’s claim to have “created” the insane anti-migrant conspiracy around Haitians in Springfield (incidentally, it was actually created by Nazis). Professor Melvin Rogers then joins, first outlining the importance of intellectual history in helping to contextualize the institutions and structures that materially shape our world within the ideas and strains of thought that inspired them, before stepping back to examine the two often contradictory strains of black intellectual thought that dominated how African American intellectual leaders saw the American project’s relationship to Black people, be it as a something that is, at its core, about degrading and dominating Black identity, or something that, like all of humanity, is unfinished, malleable, and subject to growth. Professor Rogers then walks Sam through the pre-Civil War evolution of these beliefs, exploring the stories and works of folks like David Walker and Martin Delaney to demonstrate how central the question of the American project was to the push for abolition and Black liberation, with the former presenting a challenge and a disruption to the project while the latter saw it as immutable, best to be abandoned altogether. After reflecting on the model of the American project in the pre-war North, Professor Rogers moves to the post-Reconstruction era, tackling the retrenchment of White Supremacy in the US political system as the resilience of the underlying cultural anti-Black beliefs that the era had failed to address, examining how this issue – one that abolitionists had very much acknowledged – was then addressed by Black intellectuals moving into the 20th century, with folks like Billie Holiday and James Baldwin bringing the contradictions and horrors of American racism to the fore to, once again, challenge the idea of the American project itself, and push white Americans to acknowledge the lingering impact of the ideas that shaped our society.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma quickly parse through the pervasiveness of Eric Adams’ corruption and corrosion of New York politics just since he ran for Mayor, before diving deep into the growing controversy around Donald Trump’s relationship to far-right activist Laura Loomer, the anti-DEI bigot’s refusal to DTR with DJT, and her public beef with MTG where everyone (other than them) won. Trump makes a beautiful snafu, JD Vance tries to address Trump’s concept of a healthcare plan by demonstrating his inability to grasp concepts of healthcare itself, and the MR Team discusses Ilhan Omar’s reflections on the rhetorical, but materially unsubstantial, divide between Democrats and Republicans over Israel’s genocide of Gaza, plus, your IMs!
