It's Casual Friday! Sam speaks with with Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. First, Sam runs through updates on Harris’ post-debate polling bump, the disturbing impact of anti-migrant conspiracy about Springfield, Senate polling, Laura Loomer’s DT linkup, labor action in the US, US military aid, Newsmax’s defamation trial, and Israel’s striking of yet another Gazan shelter, before unpacking the Trump campaign’s commitment to dangerous and absurd anti-immigrant conspiracy. Digby then joins as she and Sam run through the major updates to the Presidential race since her appearance last month, from the positive momentum of the Walz pick, responses to the DNC, and Harris’ major victory at Tuesday’s debate, jumping off of the latter discussion by highlighting some of Trump’s biggest blunders butting heads with Harris, from falling face-first into absurd conspiracy-mongering to shifting a conversation on childcare to one on tariffs, and myriad other moments that demonstrated his mental incontinence. Focusing on Harris’ performance, Sam and Digby parse through the data on how she connected with voters, including her emphasis on unified community over identity politics, and presenting herself as a change to a decade of Democratic (voter) depression, before wrapping up the show by touching on what a Trump or Harris presidency would mean for the future of US foreign policy.

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with adrienne maree brown, writer, activist, and co-founder of the United States League of Young Voters, to discuss her recent book Loving Corrections. Then, she's joined by Jakob Johnston, writer and researcher at the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR), author of the book Aid State: Elite Panic, Disaster Capitalism, and the Battle to Control Haiti, to discuss the recent pattern of hate crimes against Haitian immigrants in the United States.  First, Emma runs through updates on the swing-state race, the fight for IVF, anti-migrant fear-mongering, US foreign policy, Israel’s lies, and environmental emergency, also parsing through some lingering impacts from the debate. adrienne maree brown then joins, diving right into the disappearance of the community alongside growing feelings of insecurity, isolation, and bigotry, tackling how this phenomenon is cultivated and stoked by the disappearance of public spaces. Expanding on this, maree brown walks through the precarious balance between rejecting mentalities of supremacy and dehumanization that divide us without cutting the line of humanity with the people who hold those views, before stepping back to tackle a few particular essays in ‘Loving Corrections,’ which tackle the idea of countering the narratives of supremacy that have taken root in particular ideologies (patriarchy, Zionism) without atomizing or marginalizing the identities that have been corrupted (masculinity, Judaism, respectively). After expanding on the importance of understanding the historical and social context for building these bridges, adrienne and Emma bring the conversation to a close with the importance of understanding the personal context of interpersonal conflict. Jake Johnston then jumps right into summarizing the recent wave of anti-immigrant fear-mongering coming from the GOP and bolstered by the mainstream media, unpacking the deep history of the “savage” portrayal of Haitians from the state’s outset as a product of the first truly successful slave revolt before stepping out to look at the material impact of the reemergence of this brand of fascist rhetoric, namely a wave of anti-migrant hate, violence, and threats. Taking a step back, Johnston and Emma expand on the long story of Haiti’s economic exploitation at the hands of the US and the West, a relationship exacerbated coming out of the 2010 earthquake that wreaked havoc on the country’s infrastructure and saw vulture capitalists (many state-backed) flock to the disaster to stake their claim, a development that has seen the Haitian government become even further disconnected from their population, elected by and accountable to donors, rather than voters. Wrapping up, Jake tackles the importance of using this moment of absurd anti-migrant hate to redirect the conversation toward the policies of exploitation and domination – and the lack of a politically-backed alternative – that create this insecurity in the first place.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they watch JD Vance triple-down on pushing absurd, conspiratorial migrant fear-mongering, Cody from Georgia unpacks Candace Owen’s invocation of the Synagogue of Satan, and Emma gets something off her chest. From here, they parse through various highlights from the debate, including Harris’ deft touch in rhetorically outlining her own political identity and separating herself from Biden, as well as the importance of her direct approach to abortion. They also touch on Harris’ impeccable ability to trigger Trump when it came to his “winning” issues, including launching him into an insane rant about his rallies and blatantly false anti-migrant conspiracies, before tackling the genuinely troubling takeoff of this dangerous wave of anti-immigrant fascist fear-mongering. Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Benjamin Shestakofsky, assistant professor of sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, to discuss his recent book Behind the Startup: How Venture Capital Shapes Work, Innovation, and Inequality. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on presidential polling, the Harris, Trump and RFK campaigns, the DOJ v. Google II, IRS funding, the GOP’s government shutdown, Israel’s slaughter of its own citizens on October 7, the murder of Aysenur Eygi, and the end of the “return the hostages” pretense for Israel, before listening in to Fox’s suggestions for Trump ahead of tomorrow night’s debate. Professor Benjamin Shestakofsky then joins, diving right into the rise of Venture Capitalism out of late 1970s/early ‘80s reforms that shifted economic and corporate power to financiers and investors, such as the opening of pensions to riskier assets and dropping capital gains taxation, pushing businesses to put a much greater emphasis on stock prices and the promise of immediate growth instead of production or sustainability. Next, Professor Shestakofsky tackles his time working within and researching the world of venture capital, giving some practical examples of the risky and unsustainable mentality that drives the industry, stepping back to walk through some of the extreme examples of the exploitation it relies on, including obscuring the failed promises of their technologies by relying en masse on low-wage human labor – be it in the Philippines or Las Vegas. Expanding on this, Benjamin walks Sam and Emma through the impact the VC revolution has had on undermining the quality of services and helping to spur the “enshittification” of the internet, before wrapping up with some alternatives to this Silicon Valley mentality and the policies that can be used to incentivize that change. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Trump flounder in the face of more legitimate sexual assault allegations and unpack his absurd statements on gender-affirming surgery… in schools, and his platforming (alongside much of the media) of the ridiculous Venezuelan gang story out of Colorado. Next, they get into the meat of the show, as they sink their teeth into the DOJ’s recent unsealed indictment linking myriad right-wing commentators, such as noted fools-for-fascism Tim Pool and Dave Rubin, to a multi-million dollar Russian influencing scheme, walking through the complete lack of subtlety on the Russian end of the conspiracy, resulting in countless moments that should’ve made the shadiness of the dealings clear to those involved, before they make some interesting connections between these dealings and some of Tim Pool’s past claims about both his own program and MR. Wrapping up the free half, they touch on the updated sentencing date for Trump’s hush-money trial.

It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with David Sirota, founder and editor-in-chief of The Lever, and host of its new investigative podcast Master Plan. First, Sam runs through updates on Harris’ economic plan, election polling, Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza, Gaza’s polio vaccination effort, Trump’s newest demand of Congressional Republicans, Trump corruption allegations, RFK’s ballot access fiasco, Tim Sheehy, student loan forgiveness, Russian offensives in Ukraine, labor action, and starvation in Sudan, before watching Conservative media attempt to pull a half-baked accent conspiracy about Kamala Harris out of their ass. David Sirota then joins, diving right into the recent reporting on his podcast tracing the blueprint for legalized corruption in the form of deregulated campaign finance law and gutted bribery statutes back to the Watergate scandal, a scheme funded by illegal corporate donations, and a memorandum response by one Lewis Powell to growing calls for campaign finance reform that would go on to define the American conservative movement for the next half-century. Expanding on this, Sirota walks through how the recommendations found in Powell’s memo would be implemented seamlessly over the next few decades, filling attempted congressional reforms with loopholes for corporate backs, and bringing about multiple successful Supreme Court cases (decided, in part, by the now Justice Powell) that would set the stage for the Citizen’s United decision’s unbridling of corporate spending on elections, before looking at the myriad ways (many obvious) in which this legalized corruption completely undermines democratic governance. After touching on the constant (and, at points, prevalent) backlash to growing corruption in US politics, David and Sam explore the normalization of this corruption to a point beyond complacency, but of a refusal to even call it out, dissecting the hold corporate money has on our elections and what that means for candidates seeking to reform the system, and diving deep into the central role the Supreme Court has played in advancing American conservative agenda as an acting super-legislature. Wrapping up, David briefly assesses Harris’ 90-day candidacy, the importance of simplifying your agenda when given such a short window of time, and the state of the Democratic Party in 2024.

Next, Sam and Emma look to a devastating and dominant decision coming out of the Third Circuit, with TikTok’s role in boosting an adolescent social media “Blackout” challenge resulting in the accidental death of a 10-year-old and producing the first successful challenge to Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act that established social media platforms as third-party speech, finally allowing for social media megacorporations to be held to account for their active curation of the speech that occurs on their sites. They then look to Israel’s shifting fronts in their ethnic cleansing of Palestine, first unpacking this weekend’s news about the death of six hostages in Palestinian captivity, and the underrecognized role that both Biden and Bibi’s uninhibited bloodlust played in making these murders possible, wrapping up the first half of the show by diving deep into Donald Trump’s eagerness to take on Zionist money in his continued commitment to the erasure of Palestine, including a plan to fund the annexation of the West Bank, and exploring what David Friedman’s take on the issue can illuminate for us all.
