It's Casual Friday! Emma speaks with Jeet Heer, national affairs correspondent for The Nation, to round up the week in news. Emma runs through updates on the Harris/Walz CNN interview, Israel’s continuing war crimes, presidential debate protocol, swing state polling, mortgage rates, Trump’s absurd IVF pivot, RFK’s candidacy, Florida’s death penalty, and the death of Johnny Gaudreau. Jeet Heer then joins, as he and Emma parse through some high(and low)lights from Dana Bash’s interview of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, walking through her representation of her commitment to a progressive domestic agenda – including a better defense of ‘Bidenomics’ than the Biden team has ever offered – while still presenting herself as something “new,” and parsing through her steadfast rhetoric toward continuing support for Israel and their genocide. Expanding on this latter point, Heer unpacks Biden’s approach to the genocide in the wake of dropping out of the 2024 election, from his continued commitment to the Abraham Accords to some inklings of sandbagging a future withdrawal of support, before touching on the role Iran is playing in the region and the future of US Foreign Policy. Next, Jeet and Emma look at another VP trying to clean up their President’s mess, watching JD Vance perfectly show why he’s been called (by Jeet, in this very interview) “the worst VP pick since Aaron Burr” in his response to Trump’s recent comments criticizing Florida’s abortion ban.

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Neil J. Young, co-host of the Past Present podcast, to discuss his recent book Coming Out Republican: A History of the Gay Right. Then, she speaks with Hal Singer, economics professor at the University of Utah, to discuss some of Kamala Harris' recent economic policy proposals. First, Emma runs through updates on Israel’s expanding offensive in the West Bank, major polling bumps for Dems, the first Harris/Walz interview, Trump’s Q invocation, Trump’s would-be assassin, Biden’s major victory over drug prices, SCOTUS’ continuing attacks on student debt relief, Brazil vs. Elon Musk, Cornell’s labor action, and corruption in journalism, before parsing through the overwhelming threat of every type of violence that Palestinians face in the West Bank. Neil J. Young then joins, diving right into the roots of the gay Republican movement in the Cold War-era Lavender Scare, an overwhelming attempt by US federal, state, and local governments to criminalize, surveil, and punish queer Americans, be they politicians, military, police, or just every-day citizens, leading up to a 1978 ballot initiative from the religious right in California to ban queer people from teaching in public schools that saw an overwhelming organizing effort from gay Republicans to shoot down the initiative and prove that they belong in the GOP, a belief that took root among white gay men in San Francisco, before taking off nationally. Moving forward, Young then looks to the major role played by California Governor and US President Ronald Reagan over the outset and evolution of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in pushing rhetoric and policy that sought to otherize and demonize the homosexual “lifestyle” as the root of the crisis, and helping to launch a period of severe backlash to the social progress of the 1960s, particularly among the right. After expanding on the role of the public school system, and specifically the targeting of public school teachers, in right-wing attempts to marginalize and exclude queer folks, Neil and Emma walk through some of the major parallels we see with the challenges facing queer Americans today, wrapping up with the importance of understanding the immense stakes of this moment within its historical context. Professor Hal Singer then jumps right into the story of the US fight against inflation over the last few years, tackling the roles of price gouging and a corrupt rental market in exacerbating this economic crisis, including an expansive conversation on RealPage’s landlord price-fixing suit, and the absurd arguments that economists and elites used to obscure these root causes. Next, Professor Singer and Emma walk through the recent economic proposals from the Harris campaign that focus on these particular issues and what they mean within the context of the transition between Biden and her administrations, before briefly challenging the focus on anti-trust as a tool to prevent price gouging, and wrapping up the interview with an assessment of Biden major victory in drug price negotiations with the pharmaceutical industry, and how Harris can expand on and learn from that win.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they watch JD Vance and Tim Walz make clear the party divide on unions, Royce White insults the “cuck mentality” that won Trump his first campaign, and JD Vance’s cousin, BD, gives a peak behind the ol’ country curtain of JD’s campaign. It’s Hump Day! Emma speaks with Cole Stangler, France-based journalist covering politics, housing, and labor, author of the book Paris Is Not Dead: Surviving Hypergentrification In The City Of Light, to discuss the recent developments after the French elections, and the government's efforts to form a coalition. Then, she speaks with Michael Brenes, historian at Yale, author of the Warfare and Welfare newsletter on SubStack, author of the upcoming book The Rivalry Peril: How Great-Power Competition Threatens Peace And Weakens Democracy, co-authored with Van Jackson, to discuss his recent piece in the Boston Review entitled "The Harris Doctrine." First, Emma runs through updates on Jack Smith’s newest indictment, Harris’ first sitdown interview as Democratic candidate for President, GOP struggles in Georgia and North Carolina, Larry Hogan’s gains in Maryland, the Trump campaign, polling, the RFK campaign, Israel’s expansion of their genocidal offensive to the West Bank, Biden’s heavy-handed pier mishap, Meta, and Nassau County’s mask ban, before expanding on Jack Smith’s updated Jan 6 indictment and the response from the Trump campaign. Cole Stangler then dives right into a background on France’s recent snap elections, called by Emmanuel Macron in the face of the rising popularity of the far-right, resulting in a left-wing plurality in parliament unified by their anti-fascist aims, with the Macronist center-right coalition finishing in second and the far-right in third. From here, Stangler walks through Macron’s astonishing decision over the weeks since to take a hardline stance on refusing to name a left-wing prime minister or allowing the establishment of a left-wing government, taking advantage of a lack of constitutional clarity in the period he is allowed to take in naming a successor. After expanding on how this maneuver is ideologically consistent with Macron’s politics, Cole explores the overwhelmingly (and unsurprisingly) negative – but productive – response from the French left, unpacking their plan for pushing Macron to fulfill his constitutional duties, before wrapping up with an assessment of what Macron’s failure to name a new PM means for the immediate-future of French governance. Emma is then joined by Michael Brenes, who jumps right into the central parallels in his comparison between the infamous Henry Kissinger and Biden’s National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, touching on their expansive roles in administrations pushing foreign policy projects to maintain and strengthen American primacy with little-to-no moral limit, and walking through the particular role Sullivan has played in advancing Joe Biden’s hyper-Zionist agenda despite overwhelming public disapproval. Shifting focus, Brenes then looks to Harris’ recently named National Security Advisory, Philip Gordon, unpacking his record as Middle East coordinator in Obama’s second administration, including his objections to US interventionism and regime change, stance on Israeli apartheid and Palestinian self-determination, and role in advancing the Iran deal, despite Israel’s objections. After expanding on some more problematic (if predictable) elements of Gordon’s background, Michael parses through the lines between Harris’ critique of Biden’s approach to Israel’s genocide and real signs of a differing agenda, and why Biden’s failures offer important lessons in the contradictions of US primacy and imperialism.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by RM Brown as they watch Trump call on the Lord to come down and count ballots in California, parse through Tulsi Gabbard’s not-so-shocking endorsement of Donald Trump, and listen to Glenn Beck unpack the American Oligarchy. It's News Day Tuesday! Emma speaks with Alex Sammon, politics writer at Slate, to discuss his reporting from the Democratic National Convention. First, Emma runs through updates on continuing massacres in Gaza, Israel’s conflict with Hezbollah, Russia’s massive barrage on Ukraine, RFK’s candidacy, Jack Smith’s case against Trump, fascist disenfranchisement in Texas and Georgia, the UAW, Macron’s refusal to name a left-wing PM, Kroger’s anti-trust trial, gun violence, and labor action among Canada’s freight rails, also touching on the DNC’s superspreader status and Trump’s attempt to set the rules for the next debate. Alex Sammon then joins, diving right into his review of the four-day-long corporate-sponsored PR convention that was the DNC, and its rejection of the most pressing critiques of the party platform from pro-Palestinian delegates. Expanding on this, Sammon walks through his experience at a self-proclaimed “Zioness” party, a pro-gressive, pro-zionist, and pro-Kamala event, including the advertised speakers (including Senate and Congressional members), none of whom showed, and its incredibly brash yet seemingly ruminative discussion of Israel (no mention of Palestine, of course). After tackling some of the major attendees that did make the event – including Mondaire Jones and Van Jones – Sammon parses through the rhetoric that dominated the event, with little discussion of campaign spending or ongoing lobbying efforts, and a whole lot of talking about how good that Biden administration was for Israel and how great it would be if that continued, often with the implication that such a continuation should not be expected. Sammon wraps up the interview by running through his major conclusions from the event, before Emma covers some major (and majorly concerning) disenfranchisement efforts coming out of Nebraska and Georgia.

And in the Fun Half: Emma parses through some devastating and disturbing stories coming out of Gaza, including the effects of constant stress on Palestinian children, and Israel’s lionization of the IDF’s most infamous rapist. Dakota from Michigan discusses the state of the election in Michigan, the MR Team unpacks third parties and the use of electoral pressure, and Jesse Watters guns for the spotlight as he pulls out the heavy hitters of birtherism and rape fantasy to attack Kamala Harris. Next, they dive deep into Kamala Harris’ acceptance speech from last night’s DNC, unpacking her rhetorical presentation as a tough counterweight to Walz’s empathy, her appropriate dissection of the threat of Donald J. Trump, and an unapologetic focus on reproductive justice and rights. After expanding on her role as Biden’s replacement candidate, Emma and Bradley parse through the disappointing emphasis by Harris on US empire and primacy, alongside some hypocritical commentary on Trump’s support for brutal regimes. They wrap up the free half by reflecting on some initial reactions from undecided voters to Harris and the DNC.

Susan Rinkunas and Emma then look to the fights to get abortion rights on the ballots across myriad US states, first tackling the Arkansas Supreme Court’s decision to deny ballot access to an amendment over paperwork issues, the major role Montana’s referendum can play in helping Democrats’ electoral efforts, Arizona’s ongoing schemes to defend their use of 1873’s Comstock act, and Florida’s attempt to undermine democracy. After expanding the SCOTUS’ recent decision cutting down a challenge to contraceptive fights, as well as the role of Comstock in the threat of a national abortion ban, Rinkunas wraps up by discussing the important and prevalent role reproductive rights and care access are playing at the DNC.

Sam speaks with David Dayen, executive editor at The American Prospect, to discuss the recent updates on Vice President Harris' economic policy agenda. First, Emma runs through updates on Day 2 of the DNC, escalating protests of the event, abortion on the ballot, polling in North Carolina, the US’ hollow ceasefire deal, Israel’s indiscriminate slaughter, Ron DeSantis’ continuing failures, Arizona’s primary, and the FTC non-compete ban, before watching Obama hit Trump where it hurts, and Bernie call out the continuing influence of money in politics. David Dayen then sits down with Sam as they parse through the stark difference in the economic agendas of the Biden and Obama administrations, emphasizing the administrators’ role in providing at least a semblance of an economic plan amid crisis (neoliberal bank bailers for Obama, Bernie-Warren social progressives for Biden), and why just having a plan can often put you in a powerful position politically. It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with Jasper Nathaniel, writer of the Infinite Jaz newsletter on SubStack, to discuss his recent reporting from the West Bank. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Day 1 of the DNC (and the protests it was met with), Blinken’s pseudo-ceasefire, Dems’ economic agenda, Elon’s Twitter flop, the legal woes of Bob Menendez and George Santos, and Mexico’s judiciary, before parsing through Shawn Fain’s fantastic performance at the DNC, and the stark differences between AOC’s disappointing “reference” to the ongoing genocide in Gaza, and Warnock’s willingness to call out (even with both-sidesism) the mass deaths. Jasper Nathaniel then joins, diving right into how the complete appropriation of the Genocide in Gaza for domestic culture war purposes in the US pushed him to go to the West Bank for a more grounded approach to covering this one-sided conflict, tackling his level of understanding about Israeli apartheid and settler violence before his arrival, and how that was sharply upended when he was met with a constant and totalistic pervasion of cruelty and terror, be it from soldier or settler, enacted upon the Palestinian populations in the West Bank. Expanding on this, Nathaniel contextualizes his time in Masafer Yatta within the villages’ history as a supposed “military training zone,” something Israel enacted in the 1980s with the explicit intention to eventually claim said land themselves, something they advanced with decades of allowing settler gangs to roam uninhibited by law and unaccountable for their violence, culminating in Netanyahu’s recent decision to completely hand over West Bank rule to settler rule under Smotrich. Next, Jasper walks Sam and Emma through a devastating, first-hand recounting of the violence he witnessed in Masafer Yatta, with a settler’s shooting of unarmed teenager Zakaria al-Adra, and the active obstruction and inaction from the Israeli regime in charge of holding said settler accountable, before wrapping up the interview by emphasizing the pervasiveness and extremity of the settler terror regime.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma parse through some more highlights from Night 1 of the DNC, including Gov. Hochul’s tough crowd work, the stronger elements of AOC’s speech (and what it tells us about her future), and the importance of Biden acknowledging his ideological break with the Dem’s neoliberal ideology. John from San Antonio dives into the biggest obstacles to a Harris presidency, and Charlie Kirk gets schooled by the very demographic he’s supposed to appeal to. Expanding on this, Professor Slotkin walks through the role of social and economic insecurity in spurring the need to make sense of a moment, before stepping back to touch on how malleable these mythologies can be, with the same stories often taking on multiple perspectives that can be used and presented differently to affirm various, frequently conflicting, contemporary ideologies, parsing through the various myths of the American Revolution, Civil War, and the “Good War: (WWII), and how they have been employed throughout history. After expanding on the utility of these mythologies, particularly within the context of the US economic and legal systems, Professor Slotkin brings Sam and Emma into the modern era, outlining the grounding mythologies of the MAGA movement in the Lost Cause and the Second Amendment, and how Democrats can (and might be) learning how to use these mythologies to their benefit as Conservatives do.
