Then, the MR Crew is joined by Francesca Fiorentini, host of the Bitchuation Room! First, Emma runs through updates on a major prisoner swap with Russia, the Harris campaign’s hot start, questions on Harris’ Israel stance, slowing job growth, the slaughter of medical workers in Gaza, Bob Good, Nigeria’s mass protests, and the passing of James Baldwin, also parsing through the particular role Kamala Harris played in the recent prisoner swap with Russia, and what that tells us about Biden’s presidency. Sam and Digby then parse through the major pivots in the US presidential race from the last months, including Trump and the GOP completely botching the potential bump from the failed assassination attempt with the devastatingly bad choice of JD Vance for VP, Biden’s choice to drop out AFTER the Republican Convention, and Kamala Harris likely nomination. Then, he speaks with Seth Fleisher & Emily Baldwin, co-founders of the political action organization Walk the Walk! First, Sam runs through updates on Israel’s major escalations in Iran and Lebanon, US Presidential polling, student debt relief, Project 2025, JD Vance’s misogyny, the Trump would-be-assassin, elections in Arizona and Venezuela, reports on the mass deaths of native children at US boarding schools, rising homelessness and rents, and the passage of COSA, before diving into the major developments in Kamala Harris’ Veepstakes. Adam Johnson and Sam then walk through the major push by unions in recent months to challenge the Biden Administration’s support for and arming of Israel’s ethnic cleansing of Gaza, with Shawn Fain going as far as to consider the UAW unendorsing Biden, before looking to the current moment, tackling their response to Harris all-but taking Biden’s place on the ticket. Stepping back, Adam walks through the evolution of the Biden Administration’s approach to the “ceasefire” demand, from banning the use of related terms outright to now using the hope of one (and the supposed negotiations) as a tantalizing carrot, redefining the conversation away from the US using their leverage to push a cessation of hostilities to now what is largely an Israeli PR strategy focused on the supposed “facilitation” of negotiations, despite the obvious bad faith intentions. Wrapping up, Johnson assesses the narrative around Harris’ approach to Gaza, why her stance remains unclear to both unions and the public, and what to expect from her campaign moving forwards. Lastly, Seth Fleisher and Emily Baldwin join in as they walk through Walk the Walk’s project to refocus energy, labor, and money to grassroots, progressive organizing, tackling the major dearth of funds and labor in the vast majority of down-ballot races, as well as the importance of relying on existing grassroots organizations to build on and strengthen networks of community trust and civil engagement. After expanding on the major races and organizations they are working with during this election cycle, they wrap up with what we can do to join the effort.

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Anne Kim, contributing editor at Washington Monthly magazine, to discuss her recent book Poverty For Profit: How Corporations Get Rich off America’s Poor. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump-Harris polling, the fight over Harris’ platform, continuing Israeli escalation in the Middle East, Russia’s offensive, Iowa’s abortion ban, Venezuela’s election, environmental crisis, and the passing of Lewis Lapham, before parsing a little deeper through the GOP’s panic over Trump’s VP Flub with JD Vance. Anne Kim then joins, diving right into the role of one Emanuel Savas in publishing and popularizing the drive to privatize government services in their totality, pushing the budding neoliberal belief in the efficiency of the market, and successfully pushing his ideology all the way to the White House with the election of Ronald Reagan, before stepping back to look at what these social services entail – everything from prison to air traffic to healthcare – and how much of the US economy they make up. Expanding on this, Kim explores how the privatization of these social services aimed at impoverished communities results in astounding failures on the supply side, using examples from earned income tax credits, job training and the Job Corps, Medicaid/Medicare and Dialysis, and Section 8 Housing to demonstrate how the privatization of these services allows for easy capture of the market by for-profit providers, and results in exploitative institutions that push bad products onto people with little to no other choice. After tackling some of the more devastating material impacts of these failures of neoliberalism, Kim, Sam, and Emma wrap up by tackling the major ideological shift that is needed in US politics to rethink how and why we provide social services.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma unpack Israel’s continuing war crimes in Gaza, shifting rhetoric on Israel in the West, and Jimmy Dore’s insane take on why Trump is the true pro-Palestine candidate. They also dive deep into Biden’s new plan to reform the Supreme Court, and the GOP’s continuing struggle not to be obvious bigots about Kamala Harris. After an expansive conversation on Netanyahu’s commitment to this offensive, and the devastating impact it is having on the country’s economy and workforce, Foster explores the ongoing attempt to create a unity government between Fatah and Hamas. Zachary also gives a background on Israel’s manufactured conflict with Iran, wrapping up the interview by parsing through the highlights (or lowlights, really) from Netanyahu’s Congressional address, and his love for manipulating real issues for the Zionist cause.

It’s Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with Jennifer Berkshire, freelance journalist and co-host of the Have You Heard podcast, to discuss her recent book The Education Wars: A Citizen's Guide And Defense Manual, co-authored with Jack Schneider.  First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the dissent to Netanyahu’s congressional address, the Harris campaign, the GOP’s bigotry problem, climate change, Joe Biden, union dissent to US support for Israel, Elon Musk’s supposed multi-hundred dollar pledge to Trump, Bob Menendez, major FTC action, and the Chevron Doctrine, before examining the subtle and stark differences between Biden’s and Harris’ policy toward Gaza and Israel. Jennifer Berkshire then joins, diving right into the major gap in the Democratic Party’s education policy over the last few years, with no major legislative or agenda items to speak of, while the GOP maintains its steady fight against teachers, people of color, and queer people under the guise of “parents’ rights.” Stepping back, Berkshire walks Sam and Emma through the last few decades of US public education policy, with Obama picking up on Bush’s “No Child Left Behind” disaster to start the 21st Century, and expanding on the neoliberal education model that emphasized testing outcomes and teacher reports, tackling how this era of bipartisan consensus was defined by a focus on the institution’s “return on investment” rather than its role in building citizens and community. Expanding on this, Berkshire explores how the GOP’s shift under Trump saw a disintegration of this consensus, with the Right pushing instead to redefine public education as something that did not require public schooling, working to fully dismantle the physical institutions but using the funds to pick up the tab on private education. After unpacking the philosophy behind this GOP shift, and the complete dearth of a response from the Democratic Party, Jennifer, Sam, and Emma tackle the particular failure of voucher programs and charter schooling, and wrap up the interview by exploring the incredible organizing going on to save public schooling, why pro-public schools is a winning electoral stance, and what to look for from Kamala Harris’ candidacy.
