When I first discovered Nu Metal, I was 13. It was 1996, the world was different. Suddenly the aggressions of the early 1990’s “Peace in the Middle East” campaign where schools would have you recite the pledge of allegiance every morning and then a prideful listen to a song by Lee Greenwood, “Proud to be an American”. What was there to be proud of? In that time there were riots in the streets where angry musicians looted and sang about it, where the police brutality raged on in the major metroplexes.

When you look back at it, it really seems like something of a movie, from time period staples of the day like “Falling Down”, “Terminator 2: Judgement Day” in the overtly west coast scene along with other films based in a post apocalyptic Los Angeles in “Demolition Man” & “Judge Dredd”. However there were just as many cop revenge story films from New York and Miami as well, if it was a way to exploit it, it was to be done.

The music that comes into play where people realized that the only warfare was class warfare. It’s us vs. them… a manifesto where we can all get together and make a difference. The rage of the 1990’s fallout of the Reagan Administration in the 1980’s where people were promised that if they gave they would receive and they were to be recipients of a shit sandwich and a crashed pyramid scheme economy that still impacts us to this very day. The ruthless aggression was all over the news, things like “Inside Tonight”, “Hard Copy” and so much more where it exposed the dregs of humanity. Bands united and scenes mixed where bands would often mix elements of Rap, Hip-Hop, Electronica and more into the metal culture.

Insert yourself at 13, where you often are coming of age to a sort (especially in the United States) and rage and angst is rampant and you just want to be understood, all we can do is to be better. Metal Everyday.

Kentucky's doom-heavy sludge band, HIGHGATE, has teamed up with Horror Pain Gore Productions to drop their latest album, "Prophecies Of Eternal Horror."

Hailing from the hills of Northern Kentucky, HIGHGATE delivers a powerful mix of sludge and doom that echoes years of struggle and despair. "Prophecies Of Eternal Horror" paints a grim picture with themes of global war atrocities, religious fanaticism, and class warfare.

The album's first single, "At Paranoia’s Poison Door," is a blackened-doom anthem that takes a stand against an overreaching government trying to keep us too scared to think or act independently. The refrain, “crawl to your masters,” highlights the song's message about the government's ability to turn citizens into submissive followers.

Heavy Temple transcends the label of mere band; they are a plunge into a primal, sonic realm, a journey to the very core of heavy rock. Having materialized on the scene before the subsequent doom and psych resurgence, they stand not as wave-riders, but as its very genesis. Their music resonates not so much as crafted composition, but as an archaeological marvel, unearthed from the vestiges of an ancient, riff-worshiping civilization.

Heavy Temple distinguishes itself not merely through sound, but through a keen architectonic command of tension and release. They forge towering sonic monoliths of riffage, overlaying them with liberated melodies, and detonating rhythmic cataclysms that impact with elemental force. This is not passive listening; it's an experience felt in the bones, a visceral encounter eclipsing the conventional concert.

If predictability leaves you wanting, Heavy Temple arrives as the ready panacea. Rather than merely nudging the accepted limits, they shatter them outright, charting an uncharted course through the vast sonic wilderness. Thus, amplify their work, immerse yourself within the cascading riffs, and prepare for complete aural conversion: This, unequivocally, is heavy rock done right.

Scorched Earth is a groovy & thrashy death metal band from Indianapolis, for fans of '90s Sepultura and later-era Slayer. It was resurrected from the ashes of Indy groove/thrash metal band Panzer by drummer Alex McCracken and guitarist Brandon Signorino; you may recognize Brandon from Indy power-doom band Lavaborne. The band also features bassist Sara Swick and guitarist Andy Hassing, both of whom play in Indy traditional metal band Cursed Blade. The lineup is rounded out by powerhouse vocalist Mickey Marsh Davis, whose debut with the band was on Demolition, a demo released in November 2024. If you like chuggy riffs that are both catchy and heavy, you'll enjoy Scorched Earth!

North of the US border lies some amazing bands, this week I am venturing back to Vancouver, BC to check on Spell and see what magic is brewing. Cam gets down on the anvil with us this week and we are talking about some new music coming along with a Hell's Heroes stop in March and even more.

Cam was the first international guest on The Metal Forge back in 2020. They had been on my radar for a year or so at the time of appearing. That was the release of "Opulent Decay" and was still in just the audio episodes as the video wasn't a thing and I was still meticulously editing. Speed the clock up a couple years and after adding some cohorts to The Metal Forge cast of characters for spooky season of 2022, Cam made another appearance this time promoting "Tragic Magic".

If I were to give one reason or I should probably say, a reason to listen to Spell; I would say their mysticism. The mystery of just getting lost in "the sauce" as it were, is just amazing.

to quote a friend when I suggested Spell to him:

Eulogy in Blood, hailing from Louisville, Kentucky, has been carving its name into the metal scene since 2018. This doom/sludge/thrash powerhouse doesn't shy away from the heavy and the dark. Their music is a raw reflection of life's harsh realities, and I respect that.

With releases like the "Human Stain" EP and killer singles such as "Oathbreaker" and "While We Were Silent," they've already proven their ability to blend crushing breakdowns with moments of melodic melancholy. Eulogy in Blood is all about delivering a sound that hits you right in the gut, and they do it damn well. If you're looking for metal that's both brutal and honest, look no further.

Helms Deep, a band forged in the fires of 2017 by the guitar-slinging, vocal-cord-abusing Alex Sciortino, had a vision: to resurrect the raw, untamed spirit of 1980s speed/power metal. Think Riot, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest, but with a twist of prog and fusion thrown in for good measure. Sciortino's songwriting draws from a vast well of inspiration, from the iconic metal bands of the '80s to the labyrinthine sounds of '70s rock, fusion, and prog.

This project was brewing for about five years before Sciortino joined forces with the thunderous drumming of Mike Heller (Raven, Malignancy, ex-Fear Factory) and the earth-shaking bass of John Gallagher (Raven). Together, they crafted Helms Deep's debut album, Treacherous Ways. The album quickly caught the ear of Nameless Grave Records, who signed the band for an official release in 2023.

And now, hot on the heels of their 2025 release, "Chasing the Dragon," Helms Deep is ready to unleash their sonic fury once more! If you're a fan of face-melting guitar solos, thunderous rhythms, and vocals that could shatter glass, then Helms Deep is a band you need to check out, trust me you won't regret it!

Blood Curse began in 2016 with Aaron on vocals and guitar, his wife Olivia Franks on drums, and Micah Young on bass and backing vocals. They briefly had a second guitarist, George Graas, but parted ways due to style and personality clashes. Micah left a month before recording their debut album, "Sorceress," in 2018. Scott Briggs, who produced the album, joined the band in March 2018, solidifying the lineup. Blood Curse are influenced by various music genres, particularly Metallica, 80s metal, 90s grunge, NWOBHM bands like Angel Witch and Witchfinder General, and 80s American Power Metal. With Curse, they aim to amalgamate their influences into a sound that leans heavily towards Traditional Heavy Metal.
