Social media has allowed fandoms to explode - and also it has become a double-edged sword. It has allowed forms of cyberbullying to get to certain actors and actresses of certain franchises to leave their social media platforms due to constant harassment because of fans who have expressed their displeasure over a certain TV series or film. It has given rise to a term called gatekeeping - in which fans will sit behind a keyboard and express displeasure and go so far as to harass others.

Homosexuality in Star Trek is nothing new. In the early part of the 21st century, Activision held the license to produce Star Trek video and computer games based upon the 24th century era of Star Trek, which was still on at the time with Voyager ending in 2001. Canon has always been a topic of contention among Star Trek fans, debating whether or not a certain episode, film or TV series should be considered canonical or not. The books and Expanded Universe are generally accepted as non-canon, but when it comes to the aired or released filmed Star Trek, fans debate countlessly on the topic.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy - Starship Bridge Simulator was the first ever Star Trek game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, published in 1994 by Interplay. They also developed a version for the Sega Genesis add-on 32X. Interplay at the time was known for creating Star Trek: 25th Anniversary and Star Trek: Judgment Rites for the PC. At the time of Starfleet Academy, they had only created the floppy disk versions - CD-ROM versions of the previous titles would come around 1995. They would create more titles (including a cancelled game that was set for release in 1997), including the PC version of this game.

Spock - specifically the adult version as played by Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto - has been the subject of much debate on social media since production of Star Trek: Discovery's second season began April 16 up in Toronto. There are pros and cons to that notion of an adult Spock.
