Our guest, Simone Steyn, is creating a new frontier in the education and management of these "syndromes" by combining Mind-Body techniques with Psychology, Wellbeing Coaching, Psychoneuroimmunology and Pain Neuroscience.
According to Simone, people with pain-related syndromes often go undiagnosed or are incorrectly diagnosed, or if they do get an accurate diagnosis, they are not given pain neuroscience education which is a cornerstone for healing.
Pain is a complex and multifaceted experience produced by the brain that is there to keep us alive and as such acute pain is very necessary for our survival. BUT when pain becomes a chronic long-term condition and moves beyond the point of the body's natural healing process (3-6 months), it can be assumed that this pain is no longer structural (arising from injury, physical trauma or inflammation) but is, what pain science calls, Mind-Body Syndromes).
Mind-body syndrome—or MBS — is a term used to describe real physical symptoms, like pain and fatigue, that are not caused by structural damage in the body but instead by the way the nervous system has become hypersensitive and is responding to stress, emotions, and past experiences.
According to Simone, neuroscience education is a critical starting point to starting the healing process for a mind-body syndrome. Insight and learning what is actually going on in your body and brain is the starting point to healing.
In this Episode she talks us through the basics of what you need to know about pain – neuroscience education and the body-brain connection.
Simone was diagnosed with a debilitating mind-body syndrome called fibromyalgia in 2014. The Dr had not given her any information about what this was or how to manage it. The lack of information resulted in her mind running wild with fear of this unknown label and her pain and symptoms getting worse.
So, she took it upon herself to study Interdisciplinary Pain Management through a well-known South African expert in the field, Prof Romy Parker at the University of Cape Town. What she learnt on this pain management postgraduate degree opened up her whole world and started her on a path to her own healing and wanting to combine her previous psychology training with helping those living with daily pain and suffering.
Simone has come a long way in her healing and recovery process and now works as a pain neuroplasticity coach to take others through this journey.
The healing path she takes her clients on is :

● Restoring a healthy mind-body connection.
● Rewiring the brain. Including how to communicate safety and calm to your primitive brain.
● Pain reprocessing therapy techniques e.g. somatic tracking and safety appraisal.

● Somatic and cognitive affirmations and how to use them.
● Finding your magic, inner purpose and accessing Higher Self by working with your inner parts in Internal Family Systems.
● Help you become your own healer.
● Incorporating humor and silliness into her work. (Humour cancels out fear).
● Relapse prevention training, including how to recognise when you have relapsed and implementing a recovery plan to get you back to your state of health.
