In 1997, two men wrote a book entitled the Sovereign Individual, which made many predictions that turned out to be true: cryptocurrency the internet economy, the rise of political correctness and the nationalist reaction, remote workforces, digital nomads, increased terrorism, the gig economy, and the stock market crash.

They also predicted things which haven't happened yet; most notably, they predicted the downfall of industrialism and the transition to the new Information Age, where we'll witness the collapse of the welfare state and the rise of the sovereign individual.

In Episode XVIII of The Multiversity Project, we evaluate this argument, explore alternative possible futures like totalitarian world government and corporate rule, and then discuss what this prospect will mean for the world's poor, and what its moral implications are.

We can all name historical transitions of the past: the rise of agriculture, the fall of Rome, the transition from the dark ages into Feudalism, and the transition from Feudalism into industrialism. Nonetheless, we tend to think of the modern age as inevitable—for many of us, it's hard to imagine a world without nation-states.

And yet, many argue that this age is coming. The Sovereign Individual by James Dale Davidson and William Rees-Mogg examines this prospect. The writers argue that as cyberspace allows entrepreneurs of the future to exist in a manner that's disconnected from the constraints of the industrial age, incentives will shift and the power of the nation-state will be eroded.

Bliss states, DNA memory, metaprogramming, and quantum consciousness: according to Timothy Leary and Robert Anton Wilson, we all have access to these higher states of consciousness. The Multiversity Project brainstorms ideas on how to solve the meaning crisis.

To understand the meaning crisis, we need to look backwards. In times past, people lived in societies which had systems of meaning. For example, before the Enlightenment, the Western world existed within the meaning system of Christianity. China lived within Confucian, the Middle East lived within Islam and so on. These systems both unified societies, and allowed individuals to live their lives with a sense of purpose.

Our modern world lacks such a unifying system. Instead, our society swarms with a multitude of contradictory belief systems, like neo-Buddhism, anarcho-communism, voluntarism, Scientology, and so on. The modern individual is tasks with choosing for him or herself what to believe, with no guidelines for how to compare different systems. Many individuals respond to this either by picking one and becoming dogmatic about it, by living lives of quiet apathy, or by embracing nihilism, the denial of all meaning.

So how do we solve this meaning crisis? Should we force everyone to be Christian? Should we become a hivemind? Should the government subsidize Ayahuasca ceremonies, and would there be drawbacks to making psychedelic drugs more widely available? Should we introduce children to mindfulness at a young age? Should we encourage young people to spend time not working, with measures like UBI? And do people who haven't solved their own meaning crises even have the right to discuss these issues?

Join us on a whirlwind through these diverse and fascinating topics, inspired by John Vervaeke's course, Awakening From the Meaning Crisis.

As a society, we're currently in the midsts of a meaning crisis of epic proportions. Anxiety, depression and existential angst are on the rise. Bullshit, fake news and ideological conflict run rampant. No one knows what to believe anymore, and as a result, many people are spinning in circles. How did we get here, and what can we do about it?

In the past, most societies had "consensus belief systems": Worldviews which everyone in a society would agree with by default, thus providing social cohesion and a sense of purpose to those within society. Today, we have no such luxury. Instead we're presented with a multitude of worldviews, with no clear meta-system for choosing between them.
