The Oblivion Bar: A Comic Book Podcast

This week on the show, we discuss our recent visit to Southern California for San Diego Comic Con (7:18) and reviewing the 37th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Fantastic Four: First Steps (43:39)!

"Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, First Steps follows Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm as they face their most daunting challenge yet: forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond.

While the world loves them, they must now defend Earth from a ravenous space god Galactus and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer."

Joining us today is the filmmaker behind Shopping For Superman, the upcoming documentary that takes the viewer on a 50-year journey that reveals the origin story of their friendly neighborhood comic shops and the people fighting to keep their doors open.

"Since it began, the retail comics industry has contracted by over 75% with more shops closing every month. After five years of diminished sales, a global pandemic, distributor upsets, and the digitization of retail shopping dominating most markets, Shopping for Superman asks the question, 'Can our local comic shops be saved?'

Shopping for Superman does more than explain the history of retail comic book shops. Its underlying narrative reveals how shops directly influenced comic book publishing to cultivate some of the most daring and controversial materials ever committed to print."

This week, we are talking about James Gunn's first entry in the Gods & Monsters saga at DC Studios: Superman!

Clark Kent struggles to balance his Kryptonian legacy with his human upbringing while striving to protect a world that questions his every move. When Superman is drawn into escalating conflicts at home and abroad, his actions come under fire—giving tech billionaire Lex Luthor the perfect chance to eliminate him once and for all.

"Where we're going, we won't need eyes to see"

"In the year 2047, a group of astronauts are sent to investigate and salvage the long-lost starship Event Horizon. The ship mysteriously disappeared seven years ago on its maiden voyage, and with its return comes even more mystery as the crew of the Lewis and Clark discover the real truth behind its disappearance and something even more terrifying."

Joining us in the third chair for this audio commentary is the 3x Eisner-winning comic book creator behind titles like ODY-C, Invisible Kingdom, Black Bolt, Blood-Stained Teeth, Batman: City of Madness, Spectregraph, and the recent Two-Face miniseries and upcoming Event Horizon: Dark Descent: our good buddy Christian Ward!
