The Paranorm Girl

Don’t Look in the Water.

There’s something in there.

From the murky depths of Appalachia to the strange waterways just beyond its borders, we're diving into the legends, sightings and unexplained encounters that have kept people wondering what lurks beneath the surface.

Meet the Ogua, a monstrous creature of Appalachian river lore; the mysterious beast of Seneca Lake; Raystown Ray, Pennsylvania's resident lake monster; and Candy, the enormous fish said to haunt Connecticut's Candlewood Lake. We'll explore the Susquehanna River's mysterious underwater presence and its reported mermaid sightings, the strange history of the Tennessee River Monster, Kentucky's bizarre eel-pig known as Herry…and more.

Along the way, we'll encounter submerged communities, unsettling local legends, eyewitness accounts and a few theories that might make you think twice before your next swim. Could some sightings have ordinary explanations? Could others have been misidentified animals, stories that grew with time, or something we haven't quite figured out?

We'll examine the stories, follow the historical breadcrumbs and leave room for the questions to remain unanswered.

Stick around near the end for a collection of additional water cryptids and regional legends to fuel your own paranormal research. (Plus an Urgent Call To Action! St. Ignatius Hospital needs our help!!!)

The water is dark. The depths are vast. Don’t get in…the water is NOT fine 🐠

Don't look in the water.

What if ghosts aren’t quite what we’ve been taught to believe?

I recently had a very eye opening chat with Rebekah Carmichael, aka The Ghost Guide—a former ghost tour guide, paranormal investigator, medium, author and TikTok creator known for sharing her spiritual awakening and experiences chit-chatting with ghosts and other entities.

On this one, we took a guided tour through Rebekah’s recently published book, The Not-So-Scary Guide to Ghosts; How to Make the Paranormal Normal. In so doing, we explored ghosts, psychic abilities and mediumship, residual energy, spirit guides and the idea that understanding the paranormal can make it a whole lot less frightening. And, quite frankly — normal. We got into the fascinating conclusion highlighted in her book that some ghosts may be left behind fragments of a soul and what causes that to be the case, why spirits can become “stuck” in loops, the Stone Tape Theory, fundamentals when beginning to understand communication with the other side and how psychic senses may look and feel in your own life.

Stay tuned until the end when an unexpected visitor joined the conversation. A timely example of how not knowing everything isn’t a pitfall—and if you’re open to it, the paranormal finds opportunities to challenge our understanding, giving us yet more reasons to Stay Curious.

Paranormal investigator, researcher, EVP whisperer and Author Cyn Shrader Hill returns to the show for a conversation about signs from beyond and life after death. Cyn shares the wild story of the time her EVP analysis got pulled into real police business — a woman being terrorized by something, caught on audio inside her home and parked car — a cloaked figure stalking her while out in public. From there, things get strange with experiences involving unexpected ways spirit connects via technologies like cell phones and email attachments. And things get personal as Cyn opens up about losing her mother — and the moment she found her handwritten funeral wishes tucked in an old journal just before the service and a very odd series of events involving her beloved dog, Teddy Bear.

We also discuss stories Cyn has received, including one of a woman led by her late grandmother through total darkness into a place of overwhelming, indescribable color, before wrapping up with a first look at her new book series, The Unquiet Dead.

Appalachia has no shortage of monsters. Tis Cryptid Country out there.

Today we're heading into the hills and hollers for a chaotic charcutic collection of Appalachian cryptids. I offer you some classics, some obscure, some who landed on the page of a newspaper and some that landed in the middle of nowhere for a little sip of blood. These beasts weren’t easy to classify. So…this island of misfit toys gets their very own show!

Today we’ll discuss:

🐑 Sheepsquatch — the mysterious white creature associated with West Virginia and some much older Appalachian stories.

👹 The Grafton Monster — a bizarre 1964 encounter that exploded into a full-blown monster hunt before eventually becoming one of the most fascinating examples of how folklore can evolve.

🐒 Devil Monkeys — mysterious, incredibly fast creatures described as resembling enormous kangaroos, with reports dating back decades.

🌱 The Vegetable Man — one of the strangest Appalachian high-strangeness cases, sitting somewhere between cryptid encounter, UFO story, and folklore.

🩸 The Bloodless Howler — a terrifying West Virginia chupacabra-like creature said to have the face and mane of a lion and the body of a timber wolf.

You’re still stuck on Vegetable Man, aren’t you?

Along the way, we'll look at old newspaper accounts, folklore, modern cryptid culture, questionable sources and incredible evolving stories.

Grab your flashlight. Let’s take a wander through this Appalachian Cryptid Country together.

Is humanity living in the end times... or have we always believed we were?

Author, researcher, and returning guest Maxim Furek joins me for a fascinating discussion inspired by his newest book, Paranormal Apocalypse: Is This How It Ends? Together we examine why apocalyptic thinking has followed humanity throughout history—from ancient prophecy and religious texts to Y2K, the Mayan Calendar, AI, pandemics, UFO disclosure, and modern conspiracy culture.

But this conversation isn't simply about doom and gloom.

We explore why fear is such a powerful force, how cults and charismatic leaders manipulate uncertainty, why horror and paranormal stories captivate us, and whether the unknown should inspire curiosity rather than panic.

If you've ever wondered why every generation seems convinced it's witnessing the end of civilization, this episode offers historical perspective, psychological insight, and plenty of paranormal rabbit holes along the way.

In this episode we discuss:

• Why every generation believes it's living in the "end times"

• The psychology of fear and the unknown

• Religious prophecy vs. modern apocalypse narratives

• AI, pandemics, and technological anxiety

• UFOs, Bigfoot, and the scientific study of the paranormal

• Cult psychology and manipulation tactics

• Finding hope in uncertain times

📖 About the Guest

Maxim Furek is an author and researcher with a background in psychology, addictions, music journalism and the paranormal. He holds a masters degree in communications from Bloomsburg University, as well as, a bachelor’s in psychology from Aquinas College.

He is a respected contributor to numerous paranormal magazines, an invited guest speaker to well known Paranormal Conferences, has been interviewed on programming such as Coast to Coast, Midnight in the Desert, Paranormal 360 and Exploring the Bizarre and has himself interviewed known figures in the field on many occasions including Dr. Frederick Lamonte Santee, Dan Rivera and celebrity demonologists, Ed and Lorraine Warren.

Tonight’s Featured Book: Paranormal Apocalypse; Is This How It Ends?

—A work that examines why apocalyptic thinking continues to shape our culture and why humanity remains endlessly captivated by the possibility of the end.

From monster movies and indie horror to Hollywood filmmaking and the art of telling a truly frightening story, this week on Paranorm Girl Podcast I sit down with author, screenwriter, producer, and longtime film industry veteran Eric Miller.

With more than three decades in entertainment, Eric has worn nearly every hat imaginable—screenwriter, producer, transportation coordinator, editor, publisher, and author. Horror fans may recognize his work from films including Night Skies, Ice Spiders, Swamp Shark, Mask Maker, and Shadow Man, while readers may know him from acclaimed anthologies such as 18 Wheels of Horror and his latest novel, Whatever Happened to Uncle Ed.

Together we discuss:

• Eric's path from a horror-loving kid in Indiana to a career in Hollywood

• What makes horror genuinely scary beyond cheap jump scares

• The importance of character, atmosphere, and dread in storytelling

• Behind-the-scenes realities of filmmaking and life on set

• Horror writing, screenplays, and creative inspiration

• Sound design, suspense, and the psychology of fear

• Independent filmmaking and the future of horror

• His debut novel, Whatever Happened to Uncle Ed

Whether you're a horror fan, aspiring writer, filmmaker, or simply fascinated by how great stories are created, this conversation offers an insightful look behind the curtain from someone who has spent decades helping bring nightmares to life.

The guest train is a chuggin' even while the show is on a break!

Recently, I welcomed author and paranormal investigator Peter J. Roe, Assistant Director of Canada’s longest-running paranormal research team, The Searcher Group, to discuss his debut book, Haunted Town Halls which documents the incredible evidence and intelligent communications he and the team captured during a multi-year, multi-town hall investigatory tour.

Town Halls are often overlooked in paranormal research despite decades (and sometimes centuries) of reported activity. What began in 2014 as a challenge within the Searcher Group evolved into an extraordinary series of investigations involving spirit communication, unexplained phenomena, portals, deeply intriguing encounters and...ghost pee?

On September 12, 1952, something fell from the sky over Braxton County, West Virginia — and what a group of locals witnessed that night became one of Appalachia's most enduring and unexplained paranormal mysteries.

In this spotlight episode, we dive deep into the Flatwoods Monster incident: the eyewitness accounts of Kathleen May, Eugene Lemon and the group of boys who came face to face with a towering, metallic, glowing figure on a remote hillside farm. We cover the strange odor and mist that made witnesses physically ill, the parallel skid marks and circular impressions left in the field, the National Guard's secret 60-man operation on the Fisher Farm in the dead of night and the government officials who showed up posing as reporters.

We also explore the controversial barn owl skeptical theory — and why it doesn't hold up — alongside Frank Feschino's decades of research and the compelling case for an extraterrestrial in a propulsion suit. Whether you're a UFO researcher, paranormal enthusiast, or just a lover of strange American history and unsolved mysteries, this one's for you.

Topics: Flatwoods Monster, West Virginia paranormal, UFO encounters, 1952 UFO sightings, Braxton County monster, Appalachian folklore, Project Blue Book, alien encounters, unexplained phenomena, cryptid sightings, Frank Feschino, Kathleen May, government UFO

This episode is all about the hairy… and the monstrous in Appalachia.

Before we move on to other types of cryptids, we’re stepping into a category that shows up again and again across sightings, folklore, and firsthand accounts: massive, humanoid, hair-covered creatures lurking just beyond the tree line.

We begin by closing the chapter on the Wampus Cat—wrapping up our ongoing side quest and sharing where that journey has ultimately led.

Then we widen the lens.

In this episode:

• The Knobby Bigfoot sightings in North Carolina—and the 911 calls tied to them
• A lesser known report of a Bigfoot carrying a baby in Virginia
• Werewolf and canine-like humanoid encounters reported across the Virginias
• And finally… the less documented, but deeply intriguing potential of cat-like humanoid beings

Strange things be afoot in the backwoods of Appalachia.

Things all too hairy. Massive. And just watching from afar.

Stay safe. Keep the nightlight on. And sleep with one eye open.

NEW!!! Submit your story NOW to be read on "Dear Kristen"!!!

Has anything ever happened to you… that you’ve never really known what to do with?

Not just something that scared you…as true as that may be.

But things uncanny? Off? Experiences that don’t sit right in reality?

Something you still think about because it didn’t fully make sense?

If you’ve been holding onto something...tell me what happened.
