Maxim Furek is a paranormal author with a background in rock journalism and psychology. He has appeared on well known programs like Paranormal 60 with Dave Schrader and Midnight in the Desert with Heather Wade and is also a respected contributor to Fate Magazine, Normal Paranormal and Paranormal Underground. 

He has researched and written extensively about the 1963 Sheppton Mining Disaster, where 3 miners were trapped 300 feet below the surface following a collapse. Only two of the men would be rescued. They would tell a very strange story about their time in the mine that included encounters with spiritual beings, out of body experiences and a staircase to another world.

Today we discuss this case, as well as a few other examples of the weird and highly strange connections and phenomena included in his book, Coal Region Hoodoo.

Ghostlights are seen around the world and have endured throughout history. But what are they? Science offers up a variety of logical explanations. From Swamp Gas to Ball Lightning to Geophysical changes met with electrical discharges. Our world is a pretty strange place and can produce natural effects that are almost as baffling as the ghostlight phenomenon itself. But is that all there is to the story? Is there more than meets the eye when these orbs of light suddenly appear?

Today we dissect many of the scientific theories behind them and explore when these theories most certainly apply. And when they most certainly, do not. We take a very deep dive into an example of one of the most well known of America’s ghostlights before shining a light (see what I did there?) on an encounter that I found to be one of the most compelling examples in support of a far more mysterious occurrence taking place.

Since the earliest days of photography, people have been captivated by the idea of spirits captured on film. Though many ghost photos have proven to be the result of clever hoaxery, the possibility of capturing the unknown in this way, lingers still. Legitimate attempts have been made, cameras are ever utilized in our modern day ghost investigations. But the reality is that even in our most earnest of attempts, it would seem many in the spirit world either can’t or don’t actually want their picture taken. That was not the case for the ghost in today’s episode.

John Huckert had heard the noises. Seen the moving shadows. Sensed the presence. But nothing could’ve prepared him for the confirmation he would capture after aiming his camera at an empty doorway and pressing the button. Nor could he have imagined the year’s long conversation with the other side that would ensue.

Joel Stern joins me to discuss one of the most documented and thoroughly scientifically studied Poltergeist cases in history.
