Life presents us with many paths, but not all of them lead to life. David shows us in Psalm 16 that confidence, joy, and lasting satisfaction are only found in God. We often run after “functional gods” like career, romance, money, or approval, but they multiply sorrow instead of bringing peace. The narrow path of following Jesus may not always feel comfortable, but it leads to true joy and pleasures that never end. David reminds us that in God’s presence there is fullness of joy, and that apart from Him we have no good thing. He speaks truth to his soul, declaring the Lord as his refuge, portion, and treasure. As we fast, we echo David’s cry: nothing I desire besides You, Lord. Fasting becomes a way to tune our hearts back to Him, a holy homesickness for the One in whose presence we find life forevermore.
