Mystery to Me

The Pearl of Death (1944)

Listen Later

The Pearl of Death is a 1944 Sherlock Holmes film starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce and directed by Roy William Neil. Dennis Hoey, Evelyn Ankers, Miles Mander, and Rondo Hatton also show up.

Set during World War II, this film is at least slightly based on the 1904 short story "The Adventure of the Six Napoleons" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. But just barely.

In this film, Sherlock Holmes makes a rare and bizarre blunder that leads to a series of brutal murders. Yikes! Dr. Watson and the famed sleuth are left to try to clean up the shattered porcelain before criminals clutch one very special pearl.

Listen to Kevin and Áine shuck conversational oysters to find gemstones like confusing horses, the death of Presidents William Henry Harrison and Zachary Taylor, and our murderous dog,.
