I don't know if we can ever be completely confident about the job we are doing as pet parents. I think it's something we hone over time, but something we will always work towards, especially with different animals in our lives.

I do think that we can do lots of things to help build confidence, especially by learning new things and creating a team to help us.

Shannon Cutts has a very unique perspective and gift that can provide us with a kind of confidence we don't typically get.

What is it? You'll have to listen and find out!

When I was a new pet mom, I did everything my vet told me to do . . . including feeding the pricey bags of food sold in her office. I had 6 cats and they all were on different foods, even some "prescription" foods for weight management.

Fast forward and I now know that there is no "medicine" in those foods AND they have no requirements for additional feeding trials to prove effectiveness.

That said, there are some conditions that require altered nutrient profiles of food.
That's why I'm so glad there are Medicus Veterinary Diets.

Dr. Chris Bessent is the formulator of these real freeze-dried food diets. She is also the formulator and creator of Herbsmith and The Simple Food Project.

In today's episode, we'll do a deep dive into all of these projects, so you can be more informed to make better decisions for the care of your pets!

Lab-grown (cultured cell) meat was just approved for sale to humans in June 2023 by the FDA.

Of course, there are tons of questions, but we should also be concerned about what this may mean for pet food.

I don't know about you, but when I see that Bill Gates is involved, I'd prefer to run the other way.

WARNING!!

DO NOT use apps to hire people to care for your dog. Apps like Rover and Wag have been implicated in the neglect and even death of pets.

It's incredibly sad - and completely avoidable.

Learn why it's so incredibly important to vet your pet care providers BEFORE you hire anyone else to care for your beloved pets.

Alexa Rabini of Midful Dog Mom and Vegas Dog Moms joins me today to talk about how she got involved in pet care and the future of pet parenting.

My cat recently had 17 teeth extracted. I know what you’re thinking - WOW, how did you let it get that bad?! Well, I did and I didn’t. Romeo has resorptive disease and we’ve been doing dental cleanings regularly his whole life.

This past year, he developed hyperthyroidism and we had to get his thyroid levels back to normal before he could be put under anesthesia for a dental cleaning.

Once we got his thyroid levels back to normal, I scheduled his cleaning and we were expecting extractions. I wasn’t expecting 17!!!

It was an ordeal and the week following was touch and go. Thankfully he is fully healed and all is right with the world again, but I learned 5 important lessons.

Lesson #1 - Not all veterinarians are created equal!

I had 4 veterinarians work with Romeo over the week after his procedure and they all were quite different.

I’ll be talking about this and 4 more tips in today's episode.

I've called the pet food world "The Wild West" before but you may not have known quite why I feel this way. We know "The Wild West" to be a relatively lawless place where people did what they wanted and not much regulation was happening.

That's exactly how I see Big Pet Food.

Much of what I know about pet food I learned from Susan Thixton and her blog Truth About Pet Food.

Susan joins me today to let you in on the secrets that Big Pet Food doesn't want you to know about!

Find Susan's blog here: https://truthaboutpetfood.com/

The specific blog about what is regulated on a pet food label can be found here: https://truthaboutpetfood.com/what-is-actually-regulated-on-pet-food-labels/
